Help Me Pack for NYC
Hi friend! We’ve got rain, rain, rain here in Houston and so much that school dismissed early yesterday and is closed today. We don’t have good drainage, so flooding is always an issue when we get too much rain too quickly. I’m hoping everyone stays safe.
I’m heading to NYC on Thursday to meet Brian and, in preparation for packing, I tried on some outfits that I may want to bring with. On the agenda is two client/friend dinners, Brian’s birthday dinner, and walking around the city just sightseeing and popping into different places.
It’s supposed to be between 70-80 degrees with a 30-50% chance of rain. I’m usually chilly if it’s 70 or slightly below, so I’m bringing this jacket with me for sure.
HELP ME PACK FOR NYC
NIGHT OUT OUTFITS
Let’s start with possible outfits for dinner. We’ll be going to some nice dinners where you can dress up or wear jeans and a cute top with heels. I bought a few new dresses and this first one is a fave!
Dress • Similar Booties • Crossbody
I like how this dress is a miniskirt, balanced out with the long sleeves. It has a button at the chest to keep it from coming open. The material is lightweight and the top blouses beautifully over the smocked waist. It’s so flirty and fun and definitely a contender.
Dress Fit : TTS, I’m wearing XS
Dress • Similar Booties • Crossbody
Similarly, this top also blouses over the miniskirt, but it’s a one shoulder asymmetric top. I really like this one for a warm night and the clear heels make you look like you’ve got legs for days.
Dress Fit : TTS, I’m wearing XS
Dress • Similar Booties • Crossbody
This sweater dress would be perfect if the weather is chilly. It’s nice and warm, but still has sass with the one shoulder and snugly fitting skirt. It’s great that the top has a comfortable elastic so it stays comfortably in place. And the sleeves have a playful, bell shape to them.
Dress Fit : TTS, I’m wearing XS
Dress • Similar Booties • Crossbody
Top • Shorts • Sandals • Crossbody
I love wearing dressy shorts for a night out and this faux leather pair is hot! They are an easy, pull on style with an elastic waist- not buttons or zips, but they do have pockets.
Shorts Fit : TTS, I’m wearing XS
The blouse is lovely with a super soft thin knit sweater body, and dramatic, pin dot sheer sleeves.
Top Fit: TTS, I’m wearing XS
Top • Pants • Sandals • Crossbody
I’m thinking this top would look great with the Amazon paper bag waist pants if I wanted to dress a bit more on the conservative side and still feet cute and comfortable.
Pants Fit: I’m wearing an XS
Top • Pants • Sandals • Crossbody
And of course, that same top looks great with jeans. These are by Express and have a super high waist, with a pretty, medium wash and raw edge hem.
Top Fit: I’m wearing an XS
Jeans Fit: I’m wearing a 0 Short
By the way, if you need a new pair of black pumps, I swear by these. I’ve had them for probably 4 years and they still look great. They are my favorite classic black pump and also very comfortable. Bonus, they’re on sale!
Bodysuit • Strapless Bra • Jeans • Similar Booties
I always like a jeans/bodysuit outfit and this bodysuit is from Express. It’s fully lined, so very slimming and opaque.
The skinny jeans are by Loft with a high waist and raw edge hem. These fit like a glove and I like the medium wash on them.
Bodysuit Fit: I’m wearing an XS
Jeans Fit: I’m wearing a 25 (0) Short
Bodysuit • Strapless Bra • Jeans • Similar Booties
Faux Leather Pants • Amazon Bodysuit • Sandals
Oh man, I’m CRAZY for these faux leather pants! I think they’re so chic and edgy and will be great for a night in NYC or a girls night out. They have perfect stitch detailing, including the part on the hips.
Pants Fit : These run slightly small, I’m wearing my true size, 0P, but they felt like they’d be hard to sit in, so I’m ordering 2P
This bodysuit is from Amazon and I love the olive color, plus, it has a comfortable full bottom!
Bodysuit Fit : I’m wearing size Small
Faux Leather Pants • Amazon Bodysuit
DAYTIME OUTFITS
Top • Core 10 Leggings • Sneakers • Crossbody • Strap
I always bring a leggings outfit in case you want to run around in that or wear on travel day. These are the Amazon Core 10 leggings I always rave about and they have a comfortable high waist, and perfect 7/8 length. They’re nice and opaque and don’t have any distracting seams on the sides.
The waffle knit top is perfect for casual days and I like the high/low shirt tail hem.
Top Fit : I’m wearing size XS
Leggings Fit : I’m wearing size XS
Top • Core 10 Leggings • Sneakers • Crossbody • Strap
Top • Core 10 Leggings • Jacket • Sneakers • Crossbody • Strap
I’m definitely bringing this jean jacket with me. It’s SO CUTE in person with sewn on faux leather patch stars. The light wash color is perfectly relaxed AND it has a detachable hoodie. You just unsnap it if you don’t want to wear that part.
Jacket Fit : TTS, I’m wearing an XS, but size up if you want a more oversized fit, or plan to wear a hearty layer underneath
Top • Core 10 Leggings • Jacket • Sneakers • Crossbody • Strap
Tee • Shacket • Jeans • Sneakers
One more day option would be to wear jeans and a white tee with this darling plaid shacket and my comfortable slip on sneakers. I’ve worn these sneakers (not this exact pair, but same style) in NYC before and my feet thanked me after hours and hours of walking! The shacket is perfect for Fall and the pink colors are really pretty!
Shacket Fit : TTS, I’m wearing XXS
Tee Fit: I’m wearing an XS
Jeans Fit: I’m wearing a 0 Short
What do you think? Do you like the first dress as much as I do? And what about that star jean jacket?! I’m so smitten with that one! I’ll be sure to take lots of pics to share with you!

Thanks so much Tracy! I’m so excited for a little getaway!
You look amazing in everything!!!!! I love everything in this post. Have a great trip & I can’t wait to hear all about it.
Thanks Julie! I’ll definitely share when I get back!
That first outfit is so cute, I also like the leather shorts outfit and the paper bag pants and bodysuit. So cute! Have a great time!
Maybe it’s my age but I feel the first outfit is a little short for meeting business friends. It would be wonderful for date night. The paper bag pants or leather shorts are a win. The sweater dress with pumps is also cute. The black blouse is also pretty on you.
I think the dress is a birthday dinner contender- it’ll just be us! 🙂
I believe I would let Brian choose the client dinner outfit because he knows them best. The shorts are darling for date night. Have a great time. NYC is a fabulous place to visit.
I love the first dress! I’d bring the top with the sheer sleeves with jeans and the shorts and then you can decide which look spur of the moment! Everything looks cute though! Both daytime outfits are perfect!
It’s going to be too muggy in NY for sweater knits and faux leather. Paper bag slacks are cute. Your dresses are best kept for date night- conservative is better for business.
Hope you have a great time!
Thank you Stacy! Good to know- it’s hard to think about different temps.
Sweater dress and sheer black sleeved blouse are so classy and sexy on you. I’d go with those options for sure. Tend to agree with a few of the comments to lean towards a bit more conservative for business dinners. Have fun! Love NYC. Have a great cocktail for me with amazing views!
You look great in everything, though I agree that a couple outfits are a bit short for client dinners, even if they are friends as well. Love the off the shoulder top with paperbag waist pants. Have fun!
Agree with Stacy that it’s too warm still for faux leather pants, but evenings are too chilly for shorts or sleeveless. In the evening, it can go down into the upper sixties, so you might want a jacket, wrap or sweater if you have a long walk home from your restaurants in the evening.
I love every single one of these looks ? I definitely love the first dress, but it might be best for date night. I love the paper waist pants with that blouse. I agree with others that if you’re going to a business dinner you might choose that outfit or something similar. It would be a great idea to ask Brian what he thinks as he knows his clients/friends best. Having said all of this, you look ahmazing in every one of these outfits. Have a wonderful time, and please post plenty of pics!
So sweet Julie! Brian will love to give his opinion and I appreciate that. Better to err on the conservative side I’m sure!
What fun choices you have! You look great in everything I love the sweater dress and faux leather pants but I think that maybe too warm for that in NY this week. I d definitely bring stuff you can layer , maybe a nice denim jacket or sweater to throw over a dress. I m in NY and this week is all about the maxi dress and wide leg pants for me. The weather in NY has been lovely, Wednesday is supposed to be 87 then end of the week is supposed in the mid to the upper 70’s with the lows around 68-70 there is a chance of rain so it may be muggy. Have so much fun, if you need any restaurant, bar, or activity recs happy to help!
You are right, it was hot! I wore the faux leather pants one night and they were so fun, but I wished I wore a dress!
-The mesh sleeve V neck sweater tucked into a pencil skirt would look awesome on you!! (And might perfectly balance the client/friend designation for that dinner!)
-The Loft jeans and bodysuit outfit is a great almost-rocker-chic daytime look or for grabbing a casual dinner. Side note I probably need to order those jeans…
-First dress- love for date night!
-And love the policy of always packing a leggings outfit for comfiness 🙂
Have so much fun in NYC!!
Thanks so much Lisa! I can’t wait to share all the trip details with you! I took tons of pics!
Hi! I know you’re already packed and en route. I’m sure you will look chic in any of your choices!!! I just want to say the Dior exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum is absolutely stunning! I was just in NYC (9/10-9/12) enjoying the exhibit and an amazing dinner at 265 Musket Room with Sean our wonderful server! Enjoy your days!
Thanks so much Caroline! I missed the Dior exhibit- but thanks for the recommendation so everyone else can see it too!
Love that black v-neck shirt with sweater torso and sheer puffy sleeves. When I click on the link in this post and the one of your NYC recap, the link doesn’t work though. Any ideas what’s up? It’s also happening with the faux leather pants in this post too.
