Less is definitely more around here lately and if you find yourself in the same boat, where energy is at a premium, you choose carefully where to spend it. I mentioned yesterday I’ve been itching to get back to more
home decor and
DIY projects, so our master sitting room was a perfect place to bring in a few summer touches. I lightened up the space with a touch of paint that we had on hand and changed out the accessories for the summery variety. It’s not a dramatic DIY, but it’s perfect for a fresh change with minimal effort.
Those Fall branches were from Central Market and I’ve made sure to store them gingerly so I can use them again. They provided great height and color. For summer, I switched out the
Pottery Barn urn (currently on sale) for the
World Market clear vase and combined blue and purple faux flowering branches. I like a full look, so I fit about 8 stems inside the vase. They add a nice pop of color to all the beige in the room.
On our
wing chair, I just switched out the pillows for this grey and white zebra one (it’s old from West Elm, but I don’t think they carry it anymore). I like these chairs so much I bought two. We don’t sit on them for hours at a time (preferring the living room for that), but they are comfortable and have held up well.
Our
round upholstered ottoman with nailhead trim has served us well in this space. So nice to have a space to put your feet up and talk on the phone or watch Real Housewives while hubby is watching Game of Thrones. (again. for the second time. him, not me.)
I feel like its tradition to add seashells, sand, and/or coral to the decor in the summer. This large coral is my fave. I got it many years ago at Crate & Barrel and it moves all over the house. I painted it gold many years ago when nothing was immune from my gold spray paint, but I’d like it natural too.
It took me forever to hang the four family photos in this room, and then I wasn’t crazy about the tan mat. The matted frames were a steal from Michael’s, and I liked that the mat had a linen texture, but felt the color was too yellow for the space. For months, every time I walked past them it bugged me. Finally, we lightened them up!
My son helped me paint the mats white with a couple coats of white paint we had in the garage. He loves to help with projects and this kind of thing is perfect for him. He just rolled the paint on with a small roller, and then I went back over them to make sure the coverage was even. The mats did start to curl as they dried, but straightened out once back inside the glass frame.
The white mats really brighten up the space, don’t ya think? I like knowing my son helped with them too. Makes them more special.
Have you added summer decor to your house?

Pretty! I love your round metal end table. Can you tell me where you purchased it? Thanks!
Sure! That's an old purchase from Crate & Barrel. 🙂
Is this the nook off your master? i'm just starting our "master nook" and yours is definitely inspiration! Love the room.
So pretty! Isn't it amazing what a few small changes can do to really lighten up a space? And I'm with you on little energy. Having my kids home for the summer is hard work 🙂
Love the simple updates… they totally changed the space! It's so sweet that your son helped you paint the matting. Can I ask where you bought the purple stems from? I'm loving the colors!
I love how just a few simple pieces of decor can make the whole house feel more like summer. Around here I just like to switch up our throw pillows, the candles get swapped for lighter, brighter shades and I put out a summery colored throw blanket 🙂

I also would love to know where the purple stems are from – they are gorgeous! Love the entire space!
It is winter here in south africa now, so all the summer clothes and decor make me want to fast forward through july! Looks beautiful though x
Love the simple updates! They still make such a pretty difference for the change of seasons 🙂
Megan, I love the summery touches you've added! I especially love the blue and purple flowers together, they remind me of the blue and purple lupine we have outside in our garden! You've inspired me to get myself in gear to bring out some more summer decor!
I love your home! So beautiful! I’m redoing my house right now, and was wondering if you could tell me the name and size of your kitchen pendants! I love, love them! Thank you!!!
Hi Kristen, I don’t recall the name of our pendants, but we got them at Lighting, Inc. in Houston- I think they have a website you can also shop.
