Fabric Organization

What started with wanting to get my son’s artwork condensed and organized turned into a weekend full of cleaning out and organizing my office closet where things tend to accumulate until I can’t even get in there, let alone find anything.  This closet is a good size and has lots of potential, but I wasn’t making the most of it.  I moved my two wrapping carts into the closet because they didn’t go with the calmer, more grown-up vibe I was going for in the room.  I still use them quite often (more on that later this week), but with all my mess stuffed onto the floor,

Back to School Organization

Back to School Organization

That time of year is upon us, getting the kids back to school and a major feeling of needing to “get organized” in order to deal with the change.  Before we know it, our schedules will be filled with  homework, sports practices and games, class activities and parties, and everything else that comes with the school year.  Today, I’m sharing one way I’m preparing for this new school year over at 11 Magnolia Lane in their Operation Organization: Back to School Edition.   At our house, I think I can safely say Wednesday (our first day of school) is going to kick our butts as we have been sleeping in too late and our mornings have been particularly lazy lately.

Organizing the Kid Clothes

I’ve been trying to tackle a few organizing projects on my Master List and have happily completed two:  our mudroom, and, over the weekend, my son’s clothes.  As our weather is getting warmer and warmer, I needed to take stock of what shorts and t-shirts still fit, what needed to be pulled out as too small or too hot to wear.  

We don’t keep his clothes in a dresser in his room; they are stored in the drawers in the bathroom.  Two of the cabinet drawers are large and deep, which contain shirts, pants, and shorts.

Organized Mudroom

Okay folks, only took me 4 days to finally have some time to clean out and organize our mudroom, but now that it’s done, I’m loving it!  Hopefully, it can function smoothly and stay this way throughout the summer.

My son was at school when I snapped these photos, but his backpack goes on the empty hook.

Organized “Boutique” Closet

Happy Monday! Hope you all got enough sleep last night, it’s hard to lose that hour. 🙁  I’ve gotten my closet all organized and pretty to show you, but I wish you could just come over and see it! Photographing is so tricky because of the light situation.  There are three windows, which provide nice natural light, but I realized that it also gets hot or the sunshine glares into the mirror, so I keep two of the three windows covered with retail boxes. A new year, a fresh start!  Happy 2014 friends! 🙂  

I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be happier to welcome the new year.   It’s a chance to begin again and create things anew, which I always love.  I’m excited to see what this year brings.  Of course, every January I get a giant urge to purge, deep clean, and organize.  I’ve been doing a ton of just that in my home since Christmas and I can’t wait to show you my new, tidy pantry.  Even the “playroom” got a big overhaul already.  Have you been on an organizing kick too?

I was starting to freak out a little realizing on Friday night just how close we are to Christmas and how much shopping I still have to do.  Do you feel the same way?  My Christmas cards aren’t even mailed yet!  So, I spent some time online this weekend and accomplished so much.  I feel a ton better and am getting so exciting knowing I have gifts for my friends and family on the way!  Macy’s is having a big 25% off sale and free shipping with guaranteed delivery by Christmas if you order by December 21.  One girlfriend is getting this and this🙂 And another is getting this.

Medicine Cabinet Labels

Medicine Cabinet Labels

We don’t have a traditional medicine cabinet, the shallow kind that hangs on the wall with a door that opens.  Instead, we keep our medicine up high in a cabinet in the bathroom. To keep everything organized, I use my favorite InterDesign drawer organizers and put the medicine into different sections depending on what it’s for.  I use those organizers in almost every drawer in our house- they are clear and have lots of different sizes to fit everything from kitchen tools to bathroom supplies.

Over the weekend, I decided to make labels so that we could quickly tell what medicine goes where.

Today is a happy day because I finally created a much-needed drop zone in our home just off the back garage.  We normally enter the house through that garage door and, as a result, everything was getting dumped onto the kitchen counters. Organized Scarves

Organized Scarves

We got a little tease of cooler weather today, which has me pulling out the scarves that I cannot wait to wear again! When we get days without humidity it feels like the whole city is in a collective good mood.  We certainly appreciate it because it’s so rare. I finally found a simple way to organize those scarves that I’ll be getting to wear soon too.  I wanted to be able to hang them in a way that didn’t take up too much space and so that I could see them all at a glance.

I found a belt and tie hanger on Amazon and thought it might be perfect for scarves.

Operation Office Organization

The best thing about a long weekend?  A short work week!  I hope you are refreshed and had a great weekend.  My family (Dad included) rented a boat on Sunday and spent a few wonderful hours on the lake.  I had some moments where I just soaked it all in that we were all together and enjoying this day, enjoying life.  How beautiful.  Back at home on Monday, I spent a good chunk of the day getting down and dirty with my office closet.  A major clean out and reorganization was necessary.  Did you do any cleaning and organizing over the weekend?

Organizing the Kid Books

It feels like we’ve got kid books (and toys) everywhere these days.  I want the books especially to be easily accessible so that we can quickly find a book at bedtime or whenever my son wants to read.  We’ve previously kept the books in bins and baskets throughout the house, but the basket situation is getting out of control.  I wanted to get the books (and baskets) off of the floor to create more room to play.

I was considering buying a bookshelf for my son’s room, then thought, duh, just make room for his books on a shelf in our hallway.

My Home Office Organization

My Home Office Organization

With legal work, blogging, and Stella & Dot, I’ve been spending many hours in my home office lately.  Thankfully, I truly enjoy being in this space and get a lot accomplished here.  It’s way more fun to work in an office that is clean, pretty, and organized.  I feel much better here ever since I painted the walls white (they used to be light yellow) and turned my desk to face the window.  Those two small changes made a world of difference.  I also found dark grey velvet drapes that feel luxurious in the room.

Organized Drawers

When you’ve got a whole room — or entire house — that needs organizing, sometimes it’s easier to break the task into smaller, more doable projects.  Instead of trying to get the bathroom completely organized, just start with the medicine cabinet or the linen closet.  Similarly, you could tackle one drawer in your home or one small area.

We’ve got portions of our house that are “semi-organized” but still need help.  I consider the semi-organized area to be, for example, a drawer where most of what belongs there is contained there, but in a not-so-organized way.  Case in point,

At my house, it drives me crazy when one type of thing is scattered throughout the house.  I have to collect everything and have it in one place.  It’s just a weird, annoying habit I have.  Zip lock bags (that come in all sizes) are great for corralling small things together.  But, I had a bunch of things in zip lock bags that I knew could be better organized.
