How to Style Your Military Jacket for Fall

Today, we continue our Must-Have Fall Jackets series (yesterday was the faux leather jacket) and I'm highlighting the useful, lightweight yet hard-working, Military Jacket today. This is no delicate piece, you can crumple it up, take it on the airplane or keep it in your car for those places that get chilly even when it's warm out.

It's easy to pair your military jacket with blue jeans, a black and white striped top and colorful scarf (I love that look and will show you that at the bottom of this post), but today, I wanted to show you several more ways to wear your military jacket.

I swear by this military jacket (it's the one I'm wearing in all these pics) and it's great quality, stylish, and the waist cinches in to give you more of an hourglass shape.  Bonus that it's on sale 25% off (which never happens!) and it comes in three colors. Make sure to size down though because it runs big, mine is XXS.  I also found this military jacket at a great price in a more army green color.  Size down in it too.

I usually cuff my jacket sleeves so that a bit of a long sleeve shirt shows through.

This ribbed long sleeve tee is a great layering piece.  It's thin enough to wear under cardigans, sweaters, or vests and comes in five colors for $25.

For a more casual look, you can keep your jacket unzipped, but if you get cold, it still looks cute zipped up with a flap that folds over to conceal the zipper.

It's also okay to mix your metals.  In fact, I encourage it! I specifically searched for a two-toned watch for that very reason. Although I often wear gold jewelry, my wedding ring is platinum, so I also like to mix it with silver pieces.

c/o Nambe Ring

The sculptural statement ring I've been wearing lately looks like several rings, but is actually just one ring from a new jewelry line, Nambe.  You may have known Nambe had a beautiful line of home goods, but did you know they also make jewelry?! You can find them at Macy's where they have a gorgeous collection of sterling silver.  I feel like this statement ring really elevates your outfit by adding that special piece that makes it more unique.

I also mixed my metals with this Nambe ring in these outfits below, to give you an example of how you can easily do that:

Leopard Clutch | Cold Shoulder Sweater | Spanx Leggings | Layered Look Sweater | Boho Dress (Similar & Here)

Below is another military jacket inspired outfit, with the same ivory cords and peep toe booties, but switching out the purple top for an ivory tank and colorful infinity scarf.

Ivory Swing Tank | Ivory Corduroy Skinny Pants | Peep Toe Booties | Sunglasses | Military Jacket | Hoop EarringsFringe Necklace | Gold Watch | Faux Leather Reversible Tote | Plaid Infinity Scarf

You saw a version of this outfit in my "How To Dress for Early Fall" post.  It takes forever for Houston to feel like Fall, but once we feel the slightest dip in temps, we go bananas for it!  Scarves and boots and jackets for all!

 Plaid Infinity Scarf

Of course, military jackets go particularly well with blue jeans too.  You can do a neutral look like I did below with a tan sweater and brown over-the-knee boots.  This pair is on sale 25% off.

Or a colored top, like this darker purple with a statement necklace and tan knee-high boots.  #hibabybelly!

Earlier this year, when the weather cooled for a minute, I wore my military jacket with a black cold shoulder top, bootcut jeans, and black heels.

Or you can add a pop of red with a bold lip and plaid scarf with your favorite black and white striped top.

Black jeans also rock with your military jacket.  These are my fave black crop skinny jeans, but on me they are more ankle length.  I added a burgundy cowl neck sweater, the lightest plaid scarf and yes! mixed brown peep toe booties in there.  You absolutely can mix black and brown together, just like you can mix your gold and silver jewelry.

Finally, don't forget that your military jacket looks great with dresses and skirts!  Especially this black and white striped turtleneck sweater dress.  It's new and I love it!

  1. I purchased one at the end of the season last year. It's finally getting cool enough to wear it in the evenings. Still love your hair darker!

    1. I'm always looking to simplify my life and having my hair a more natural color has been such much more low-maintenance!

  2. I love your fashion posts and really love this military jacket. I have a question about weatherproofing booties though. Your black pair of wedge booties on this post...I purchased the similar addison wedge booties you linked to at Nordstrom. Did you waterproof spray the leather booties or is it not necessary? Thanks.

    1. I think I answered on IG, but just in case! I haven't waterproofed mine, but our weather is mild so I didn't feel the need to.

  3. Hi Megan! Thanks for the fun fashion ideas. I live near Houston, down in Friendswood, and appreciate that you realize it's still 80 in November! For the military jacket - what color are you wearing in this post? I have an older jacket that's more like a blazer that I love, but looking for one that's not as formal and it's a deep olive. Just curious. Thanks!

    1. When will Fall really come our way?! I will say the lower humidity is pretty darned nice right now! Great question on the jacket- they can tend to look different in different light, but I only have one and it's called Olive on the website.
