Top 10

These Top 10 ‘hotspots’ in our house got a major reorganization and I’m sharing the before and afters with you here.

Master Closet

Master Closet

We’re just one organizing project away from completing all 10 of the Top 10 Organizing Challenges that I set out for myself in January.  And good thing, since we’re already in March!  I didn’t want these organization projects to drag into March, but I’ve realized it takes time to get to everything and to do it well, especially with tasks like the pantry and playroom.

My closet needed a good clean-out (seems like it needs it yearly) and that’s no small task when it involves trying on everything and letting many things go.  I had been holding onto lots of my “lawyer”

Remember when you first moved into your home and you had clean, never-been-used spaces and empty closets?  These spaces represented possibility, a fresh start, a chance to start anew . . .

And then somehow, over the years, you end up stuffing who-knows-what into those spaces and then just shut the door so you don’t have to deal with it. But, behind closed doors lurks a closetful of clutter.

In my son’s room, he hasn’t been utilizing his closet because I never set it up for good use.  He keeps most of his clothes in the drawers in the bathroom and his pajamas in the dresser in his room,

Mudroom Cabinets & Cleaning Supplies

Mudroom Cabinets & Cleaning Supplies

I managed to check off two more organization challenges this weekend, the mudroom cabinets and the cleaning supplies.  I decided to make this into one post since these two chores weren’t all that taxing.  The biggest part of digging in was just getting started.  I kept putting it off, but on Friday night I actually decided to “just do it.”  Once you get going, you build momentum and then seeing the progress feels so good!

I decided to start this off with the finished “after” photo since I didn’t want the first picture on this Monday to be all our chaos.

Paperwork

Paperwork

I’m halfway through my Top 10 Organizing Challenge! First, I cleaned up our entryway drop zone and added a cute wooden mail organizer to hold the incoming mail.  Keeping the mail chaos at bay is a daily battle, but I try to keep it from getting out of hand by quickly tossing/recycling anything that we don’t need to keep. I’ve also been unsubscribing from magazines and catalogs to keep the paper waste down.  I’ve kept my very favorites, but let others go.

The large woven basket underneath holds all my husband’s baseball hats or random shoes and I put his laptop bag down there too or else it takes up too much space on the counter.

What a difference a long weekend makes!  We fully celebrated MLK Day with a mommy/son late morning hike through the Arboretum and it did wonders.  We went with another mom and friend and just had the best time being outside.  It’s always great to appreciate the clear, sunny skies after many, many days of cold, dreary rain.  Being outside and being active with my son made me crave more time like that.

I finished another project on my Top 10 Organizing Challenge too!  After two major organization jobs last week (the PANTRY and the TOYS),

The Toys

The Toys

Operation “Organize the Top 10 Areas of Our Home that Need it Most” continues today with the always growing amount of TOYS! Like anyone else with kids, and especially after the holidays, we find ourselves really needing a good toy reorganization.

I have rarely shown this space in our home because it’s not been anything worth seeing.  It was designed to be a “media room” – mostly a guy’s space to watch games and hang out.  For a couple years, it was just a storage space for unused furniture after we moved from our townhouse.  As we’ve cleared out the furniture,

The Pantry

The Pantry

Can I be honest with you?  Cleaning out and organizing my pantry was not something I was looking forward to.  I knew it would be a big job and, to do it justice, would require a lot of work.  But, it had gotten out of hand and I really have to stay on top of it since our pantry does double duty- storing our dry food and canned goods as well as decor and entertaining pieces and big cleaning tools like the vacuum and broom.

Although I’d actually like to “decorate” this room, and by that I mean paint the shelves/walls or buy ALL of the same kind of organizing bins,

Refrigerator

Refrigerator

Here goes Day 1 of my Top 10 Home Organization Challenge!  This month, I’m working on getting 10 areas of our home clean and organized.  If you missed the first post, you can go here to catch up.  The refrigerator is a logical first place to clean out for the new year.  As we start thinking about treating our bodies right and taking steps to get healthier, maybe cooking more and eating out less, having a good, clean refrigerator will help you do that.  It doesn’t make for the most exciting blog post, but it’s a great step towards starting the new year off right.

Welcome back to life!  I have to admit, as much as I enjoyed the long Christmas break, the last couple of days I was starting to get a little stir crazy.  Turns out too much lounging around isn’t necessarily a good thing!  I was sad to see our Christmas decor go, and now our home looks so bare.  My son takes after me and was sad too.  Last year, I welcomed all the clean and clear spaces.  This year, I’m anxious to bring the feeling of life back.  Bye, bye Christmas tree!  Until next year . . .
