Meet Luke!

Hello friend! Welcome to a fresh, new week!  I’m soooo excited to introduce you to the newest member of our family!

Meet Luke!

Luke is an adorable 4 pound, 13 week-old Maltipoo.  Could he be any cuter?!

I can’t even believe we have a cat and a puppy now!

I haven’t had pets in over 12 years, and it feels soooo good to be able to give these sweet animals a stable, loving home.

My kids have been asking for a dog for a very long time, but I held off until I knew I could devote the kind of care and commitment a dog takes.

Now that I’ve got my feet firmly under me and my daughter is a little bit older (she’s in first grade), we’re ready!

It’s funny how serendipitous life is sometimes.  In the past couple of months since inviting Kitty to live with us, I’ve realized how much joy our family has gotten from caring for and loving an animal.

Luke is a perfect fit for our family.  James has allergies, so a low shedding dog like a maltipoo is unlikely to trigger any symptoms.

It took my kids forever to agree on a name for him.  James wanted something with a Star Wars theme and Jordan liked the name Luke – we’ve also been watching Gilmore Girls together – remember Luke on that show- sooo, Luke turned out to be the only name they agreed on and I like it too!

I’ll take him to the vet this week, the same one I took Kitty to.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous about how Kitty and Luke would get along, but so far so good.

At first, Kitty was totally keeping her distance and Luke isn’t all that interested in her.  Kitty has started getting closer and closer, up to a couple feet away, just observing him.

My girlfriend said it took her cat a good two months to get fully comfortable with her dog, and now they’re BFFs. I’m hoping that’s the situation here because I want Kitty to feel 100% safe and at home here.  We love her so much.  If you have a dog and cat, how do they get along, any tips??

I’ve started crate training Luke and have a crate downstairs and one upstairs in my room.

He has been sleeping through the night (except for the first night) and I’m so thankful.  He’s also very attached to me and loves being right next to me, my little fur shadow that I actually have to be careful not to trip over. He blends right into our light hardwood floors!

The amount of work a new dog takes is serious.  I’ve been immersed in him, haven’t gotten hardly anything done around the house, and am working on getting him potty trained.  He’s already had several accidents in the house.  For now, I’ve pulled up my foyer rug (he went there twice) and my kitchen runner (being a little pup he loves to chew it). I know I have to be patient with this part . . .

Regardless, I’m willing to work through the challenges because he’s worth it.  We absolutely adore him already!

I’ve been sooooo excited to share this new chapter in our lives with you and will be sure to keep you updated on how Luke is doing.

I’ll share some videos on Stories too!  I promise you, he’ll melt your heart!

He’s spunky and lively, a real cuddlebug!  He already likes his chew toys, belly rubs and playing in the backyard with us!

Luke- you have found your forever home and we are so very grateful for you!

  1. How sweet & cute! Dogs are such a HUGE commitment and responsibility, but so worth it. If you start having issues with him whining in his crate, put a blanket inside that smells like you. It will calm him down since you are his new “mama”.
On a side note, I mean no disrespect, but please get your son a proper hair cut! 🙂

    1. Disrespect given. So incredibly rude. As a momma of 3 boys, there is no “proper” haircut. When in doubt, always choose kindness. 💜

        1. Honestly, there are so many other things to worry about. As they say, pick your battles and let your kids express themselves. You are a loving momma and that’s what really matters.
XOXO from a fellow mom of 3

    2. “I mean no disrespect but get your son a proper hair cut” … If your input comes from a place of being concerned with outward appearances and the opinions of society, consider if that’s something you want to project on others? A good guide – where or what is your advice rooted in and to what end.

    3. Chiming in to say that is very much the style of teenage boys right now! I have 3 sons rocking that shaggy look and ALL of their friends are as well- he looks super stylish to me!!!
Both Kitty and Luke are adorable and sure to be loved
      Also- mind your manners!!

    4. @Lakin – No No No – that’s rude. And if you start a sentence with “I mean no disrespect” then what follows it most likely is. Even my 6 year old knows that. Do better and be kind.

    5. You don’t mean disrespect? Wow! Read your statement again and maybe you’ll realize how disrespectful it is. 🙂 Be nice!
In a world that’s getting crazier by the minute say something kind! It will make their day & most likely yours too! Try it!!

Congratulations on the pets! The kids will learn so many great life lessons from taking care of them.

    6. Are you serious? Her son is a beautiful boy with a haircut that suits him, how dare you put people down like that? I pity people having to be around you, get a grip.

  2. Luke is adorable!!! Love the name!! And I’m sure Kitty and Luke will be fast friends for life ❤️

    1. Andrea, as a fellow mom, I have to say I find your comment to be unkind. I’m sure it wasn’t your intent, but negative (unsolicited) feedback about your child is really unnecessary. Please consider how this unsolicited feedback feels to you, as it’s likely how Megan might feel from your comment. Let’s do better! Have a great week 😊

  3. Best wishes! I have an 11 year old maltipoo and she is the best! The perfect combo of cuddles and smarts. My breeder stopped breeding maltipoos so I may reach out in the future.

  4. Luke is a cutie! We have three dogs and a cat. The bigger dogs, labs and the cat always got along, usually could find them laying in the yard together. We then got a covid puppy a Cavalier and the cat wasn’t so sure of him, because he was in her space in the house. But now they just ignore each other for the most part. Momma kitty is old so she doesn’t have a lot of tolerance for him. But he is sure to let me know when she needs food (it’s on the counter because puppy’s shouldn’t eat cat food) and if she needs to go in or out. Enjoy this time, pets are a lot of work, but they also bring so much joy to your life!

  5. I’m so happy for you and the kids! Luke is so adorable! I’m sure that Luke and kitty will get along. I have dogs, cats and a bunny and everyone gets along great!

  6. If you do a slow introduction between the two you’ll be perfectly fine. Just google exactly this. Best of luck!

  7. I promise you your kitty and doggie will get along great. We had 4 cats and a dog and a bunny. They all got along and were BFFs. The cat takes the longest to warm up. They like to run the house, you know 🙂 I LOVE LOVE LOVE that you gave that sweet kitty a great and safe home. I love that. THANK YOU for doing that and being a responsible pet owner.

  8. Luke is so cute! I was never a dog person until my kids talked us into a dog … and he was seriously the piece of the puzzle we needed to complete our family. It’s so cool to me that they just wriggle their way into your heart. The kids look super happy! Enjoy your new “babies”.

  9. I’ve been excited for you since you started telling us about the cat, since I held off on getting a pet (2 cats:) until last year when my kids were 12 & 14, and I now kind of regret waiting so long, they are such a joy (I’m obsessed, lol)! & my black one looks a bit like yours too. I have to admit I’m commenting in support of hair (in response to previous commenter), coming from an upbringing where my hair (& appearance) was commented on by my mom probably daily, that it’s really not in the best interest of your kid to “control” stuff like that, & as a parent I’m in support of letting the kids look they way they choose, & I try to put my two cents in when it comes to more serious issues, that being said, your son’s hairstyle is definitely the style now, all of the teens wear it like that, it’s the current fashion, it seems so really unnecessary to share opinions about haircuts anyways, sending positive vibes your way friend!

    1. And if anyone has been here awhile, they know I let my kids choose the hairstyles that make them feel the most confident and happy! I have my preferences, but I pick my battles.

  10. Puppies are hard work at first just like babies, but the good news is that the hard phase is wayyyyy shorter for dogs than humans 😄 We loved Zak Georges videos on puppy training when we first got our boy Leo a year ago!

  11. LOVE your new additions to the family! As a mom with 4 rescue pets, 2 ( I think?) Maltipoos a black cat ( with a white necklace like yours) and a tortie ,just know they are going to be YOUR pets lol! While the kids are off at school and off playing with friends, you are the one at home feeding them, playing with them, and just THERE. The two dogs and black cat were gotten within the same 6 month period and usually travel as what my girls call “ moms posse.” They follow me everywhere and if I sit, the dogs are my bookends and the cat is on the cushion behind me…twelve years later, my constant companions! The tortie ( my daughters former pet) holds her own and usually is on the fringes, we love her lots too! You and the kids are going to have so much fun with them! The kids are adorable and LOVE your sons hair! Real life, right? Lakin totally out of line!

  12. You need to frame the last picture of your kids with Luke. I’m surprised James allergies are ok around the cat. I’m hoping it stays that way.

  13. Welcome Luke & Kitty, looking forward to seeing more of them around the blog and IG! My kids were 8 & 9 when we got our sweet dog Lulu 8 years ago, she’s been the best! 🙂

  14. So happy for you and your family Megan! Luke and Kitty are adorable 🥰
My daughter and I are considering getting a dog. We live in an appt. so not sure what will be the best breed, plus pretty much will be our first fur baby. I am sure it will bring a lot of joy into our lives. We have been through a lot of changes and challenges the last two years.

  15. I love your puppy he is so adorable! I have been told that MaltiPoo combo is to be great for allergy/ asthma sufferers.
Would you mind sharing your breeder info?
    Thank you 😊

  16. Congrats, Megan! Luke is so adorable and the kids look like they’re in heaven! Pets add so much joy, I can’t imagine life without our pup. Take care 🙂

  17. I told you a few years back the kiddos needed a puppy. You said James was begging for one. I’m so happy their wish came true. He is adorable and had to laugh at the fact he blends into floor color.

  18. Oh how ADORABLE! I am thrilled for you and the kids—between Luke and Kitty there will be many happy memories made! We had two kitties first and then added a puppy when my kids were 5, 8 and 11. It was so funny how the cats ruled. They kept the dog in check! Sending much love (and patience) as everyone adjusts. It’s just the best! Those are two very lucky pets — they are going to get lots of love!

  19. My husband and I just adopted two puppies who are now also 13 weeks old! They’re so cute at this age, and yes, totally exhausting. All the work is worth it, though. Congratulations on getting your new pets – your kids are the perfect ages for them, and they’ll add so much fun and love to your lives.

  20. Hello,
You are gonna love you Maltipoo. I have a 6 yr old one. Wonderful family dogs. They are true companion pups and want to be right where you all are.
Lol, gotta laugh at rude comments, let your kiddos wear their hair however they choose, they are two handsome young men.

  21. Congrats on Luke! I am so sorry about the rude comment about your son’s hair. You are a wonderful mom to your kids. I’ve followed you for many years. Keep being your wonderful self! God Bless you always!

  22. We have a Maltipoo too and she is wonderful. She has a great personality – so playful with kids and affectionate. At 15 pounds, she’s the perfect size for our family too!

  23. It’s only hair!!!!! We have a dog and a cat. The dog was the first fur child and then came the kitten. They are the best of friends. The dog likes to help the cat with her bath. When she gets tired of him she goes to the top of her perch and goes to sleep. I love to watch them play together.

  24. Ok, back to the puppy, he’s adorable and your kids are too. Puppies are loads of work in the beginning, but so worth it. Enjoy him they grow quickly and one those baby teeth come out you will have a dog instead of a baby shark!
