Guest Bedroom Makeover Plan

Hi friend!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend and are heading into Monday refreshed!  I had a good amount of alone time, which is just what the doctor ordered.  I don’t know why I feel guilty admitting I need that time to myself, but I know it’s necessary.  It’s the reason I wake up at the crack of dawn to beat the kids in the morning! 😉

GUEST BEDROOM MAKEOVER PLAN

I’m so excited to share my plans for the guest room with you today!

You may remember that my son, James, moved his former bedroom into the media room awhile ago.  That left us with an empty room and I wanted to spruce it up and make it into a proper guest room for when we have people over.

I have a couple of girlfriends who visit from out of town and it would also be nice for cousin sleepovers or if my mom wants to spend the night.

WALLPAPER

The room already had the punchy blue and white wallpaper and I decided to leave it since I still really like it.  I’m wanting to take the room in a more feminine direction though, so I’m hoping some floral accents and soft textures give it that vibe.

The room used to be an Astros themed room, so the doors and trim were painted blue, but I’m having them painted white.  That will give the room a light and airy feel and make it more gender neutral.

THE BED

Of course, every guest room needs a bed, so that’s where I started.  I’m loving the look of those natural and cane beds (seen here, here and here), but they’re super pricey.  I’m trying to do this room on a budget, so I’ve been pouring over websites and comparing prices, trying to get the best deal and most for my money.

These gorgeous beds on Pottery Barn and Serena & Lily would be a dream, but more than I wanted to spend on this room.  I kept looking and looking and realized that I could just buy a headboard and save loads of money as opposed to buying the entire bed.  I haven’t done that before, so I’m hoping it works out.

I saw woven headboard online and it’s just the type of woven texture I wanted to add in the room.  I’m crossing my fingers that it looks as good in person as it does online!

I also needed a mattress and bed frame. I went with a bed that’s similar to the bed Jordan and James already have in their rooms.  I’ve slept on both of their beds many nights and they’re quite comfortable so I knew it would be a good choice as a guest bed.  I got a queen size Beautyrest with cooling technology and hope my guests get a good night’s’ sleep on it.

The mattress is 12 inches and I ordered this bed frame to set it on.  I didn’t get a boxspring, I’m hoping these dimensions work well with the headboard.

BEDDING

Since there’s no actual bed, I’ll need a bedskirt and I still need to order that.  I want to make sure I get one that’s nice and opaque as opposed to sheer and flimsy.

I’ll keep the bedding white and neutral and use the soft Amazon sheets we have on every other bed in our house.  You can’t go wrong with those.  They are amazing to sleep in and hold up well with weekly washings.

The pillows are a work in progress, but they are important for the overall look and feel of the room, so I want to get that right.  I ordered a few lumbar pillows, but I really like the floral embroidered lumbar pillow because I’d like the room to have some femininity to it.  With the blue wallpaper, it can quickly look masculine and I wanted a softer feel.

I also ordered this really pretty Euro pillows from Target and I think they’ll also add that feminine touch to the room.

At the end of the bed, I’m adding a woven bench for a place to sit and added visual interest.  I thought this one looked similar to the styles at Serena & Lily, but at a fraction of the cost.

RUG

The room will get an extra dose of texture with a braided rug.  I like to layer rugs with carpet and I think this one will tie in nicely with the woven headboard.

I like to use a rug pad underneath, and got this one that’s nice and thick.  These genius sticky rug grippers will keep the ends of the rug in place.

ART

The framed wall art already arrived and it’s gorgeous in person!  It’s also much larger than I anticipated, so it will be a lovely focal point above the bed.  It’s a beautiful natural landscape photograph and the white frame is nice and substantial.

NIGHTSTANDS & LAMPS

I was so happy to find these white nightstands for a steal.  When I was originally looking online, the first place I found them was selling them for about $550, but I kept searching and found them for around $300! #score!

I’ve had these tall grey ceramic lamps in my living room for ages, but I recently bought these grey stone looking lamps for that space, so I was able to move these lamps upstairs.  I think they’ll look great there and will save me from having to buy new lamps!

DESK

I kept thinking I’d like to have another surface in the room for guests to set their belongings and to fill the space and I saw this wooden campaign desk on display at Target and it looked so good.  I’ve been a fan of campaign style desks for a long time and I think it will look classic here and add another natural element since it’s a dark wooden piece.  I just need a chair now.

I’m so excited for this room to come together.  My friends Karen and Trisa are planning to visit this month, so it’ll actually get to be used soon!  I’ll have fun adding accessories later, but for now, I think all the big pieces are gonna look lovely!  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. What program do you use to create your vision board on what the room will look like? I’d like to see if some of your pieces will work with my existing room but would love to “see” it. Thanks!!!

    1. Hi Christy! I use PicMonkey. It’s super easy to use and also helps me “see” how things would look! I’ve also done this for family photo outfit ideas!

  2. I purchased a woven headboard for my guest room from Home Depot recently and it looks fantastic! It was about $250 I believe. Your room looks great!

  3. Love this – you’ve definitely got a Serena & Lily vibe here. My guest room has a lot of similar elements. Have you looked at bedskirts at Ballard Designs? Love their burlap bedskirt for a bit of added texture. And I just added this bamboo-handled tray in green for the dresser top to corral books and trinkets. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out, I love your decor posts! https://www.markandgraham.com/products/monogrammed-bamboo-lacquer-tray/?pkey=s~bamboo%20tray~11

  4. If you are buying a bed skirt I suggest one with elastic all around ( or on 3 sides) as opposed to one that fits under your mattress. Those are so much easier to put on / take off bed for washing or changing out . I’ve purchased several from Amazon. Your whole house is gorgeous !

    1. Thank you Ellyn! It’s the linen comforter and sham set (from Target) linked under the photo. I really love it- it has a beautiful texture to it and feels nice and luxe!
