Summer Hair

Hi friends!  Did you have a great weekend? Brian and I spent the weekend in Galveston and it was such a nice getaway.  Galveston is just about an hour south of Houston, so it’s easy to get to, but you feel like you’re a world away.  It was really good to get my man all to myself for a couple of days- and the weather was perfect!

I have a Q&A going up on Stories today, and I’ll be answering more of your questions about him there if you want to join!  You can read my most recent Q&A post here.

Today’s post is all about Summer Hair and I’m sharing how I’ve been styling my hair lately.  I like the more undone beachy look, with a bend at the top and straight ends.  I finish it with texture spray to give it that ‘piecyness’ and root lift for extra volume.

SUMMER HAIR

SUMMER COLOR

I got my hair colored a couple of weeks ago and always apply and Oplaplex hair mask the day before my appointment so that it’s strong before all the color and processing during my appointment.

I’ve been going to my friend Shelby for a couple of years now and I she does both my color and cut.  I love how she does my hair, plus she’s my sis-in-law’s best friend, so she’s practically family. ♥

I ask for a bright, beigy blonde. Shelby calls her technique “weavies & teasies”.  It’s a combination of teasylights, babylights and hand painting on the ends to freshen it up.
The color isn’t balayage, but there’s no harsh lone of demarcation, which makes for a softer grow out.  That’s what I love.  My hair grows fast, so when I used to get traditional highlights, I was in the salon every 6 weeks.  Now, my sweet spot is about every 4-5 months.
After she applies the color in foil, I sit under the heat lamp for about 15-20 minutes.  Then, she has to take out the foils, comb out the teasing (ouch) and shampoo and condition.
This time, a few days after my color appointment, the next time I washed it, I used this Argon Oil hair mask and my hair was left so soft, shiny and healthy looking.

SUMMER CUT

As for my cut, I have long layers, and the shortest layer is past my chin, almost to my shoulders.  At my last haircut Shelby just freshened up the layers and dusted the ends, which means barely taking any length off.
Years ago and for most of my life, I’ve had really long hair, about to my bra strap.  But, as I’ve gotten older, I don’t think that flatters me as much and it’s so much easier to style and maintain the shorter length.
At this length, I can still put it up in a pony tail when I workout or want it off my face.

STYLING

Assuming I’m starting with wet hair, I let it air dry as much as possible before using my T3 hairdryer to dry it all the way. Sometimes I round brush it, but I don’t think that’s necessary with this Summer Hair style.  I usually use my wet brush to brush the hair forward and flat until it’s dry. Doing it this way also helps tame my cowlicks to some extent.

This is how it looks when it’s dried, before any styling.
And from the back.
On my dry hair, I’ll spray Hot Toddy heat protectant as an extra layer of protection since I’m going to be flat ironing the ends and curling the top.  This product is meant for dry hair, so it’s great for second & third day hair if you’re going to be adding heat and freshening up your curls.
I use my flat iron to smooth out the ends and make them straight.  I quickly run the bottom 2-3 inches through the flat iron.
Next, I’ll lightly spray a dusting of hairspray all over my hair, just for extra hold where I’ve curled it.
I use this comb to comb through and section my hair before curling.
I start with the curling iron barrel open and hold it horizontally, curling the top portion of hair near my head, leaving about an inch or two of hair out of the curling iron.
Starting near the root, I curl most of the sections away from my face, leaving out about 2-3 inches of hair at the bottom.
To get more beachy waves and so the curls don’t all clump together, I’ll curl 1 or 2 sections on each side toward my face.
I’ve been blessed with two crazy cowlicks, and these ‘no bend’ hair clips help me tame them.  I just clip them in how I want my hair to lay and leave them in for a few minutes to train the hair to lay that way when I take them out.

Next, take the clips out and rake your fingers through your hair to separate the curls.
You’ll be left with a bend in your hair near the top, and straighter ends.
Next it’s time for texture spray!  My hair never looks great until I spray my texture spray into it.  I’m crazy for this one and it’s a Must Have hair product that I use almost daily!
This next step is optional, but it really gives your hair that grit and volume that I don’t get with anything else.  You can probably accomplish a similar look with teasing, but I’m not that great at that.
The Oribe Swept Up does feel tacky in your hair, which made me dislike it at first.  But, I liked what it did to my hair so much that I kept using it and now I love it.
Just don’t overdo it- a little goes a long way.
You spritz it into your hair and it puffs out like a fine powder.  I spray it to along my top part, and then on each side.  I lift up the side, and spray into the root of my hair.
Them, get your hands in there and watch the volume triple!

Finish with a light spray of hairspray, just to hold the bend.  They hairspray is a medium, flexible hold, so you won’t get helmet head if you go easy.
Summer Hair
I find that I like my hair after it sort of “settles” in a few hours.

And the best thing is, I can easily restyle this hair for a couple of days with just dry shampoo, a few more curls, and texture spray.

Summer Hair

I like that this style is kind of undone, so it’s not meant to look “perfect.”  A little bit of messiness adds to the charm!  It’s also easy to add in dry shampoo and a few curls the next day or so to freshen it up.

PRODUCTS I USE

Summer Beach Hair

Dry Bar Hot Toddy • I love that you spray this on dry hair.  I like to use it when I’m re-curling my hair on Day 2 and beyond.

It’s a 10 • I keep coming back to this heat protectant because it also detangles my hair really well and it doesn’t weight it down.

Chi Flat Iron • I’ve had this flat iron for years and it’s still going strong.  It gets really hot, so I run it through my hair quickly!

T3 1.25 inch Curling Wand • The 1 inch wand will give you tighter curls and the 1.25 inch wand will give you a looser curl.  I like to change it up and use both, depending on my mood and the look I’m going for.

T3 Hair Dryer • Time permitting, I like to let my hair air dry about 75-80% of the way dry, before blow drying it with a hair dryer.

Hair Clips • Where have these things been all my cowlick life?!  I could’ve really used them in 4th grade!

Oribe Swept Up Volume Powder • I wasn’t a fan of this at first, but now I can’t live without it! It definitely leaves a grit to your hair, but its perfect for giving you that volume teased hair without actually teasing it!

Oribe Texturing Spray • I couldn’t live without my ride or die texturizing spray.  It’s the best one I’ve tried and gives your hair all those textured, sexy vibes.  Simply spray up into your hair, wherever you want more volume and texture.

Oribe Dry Shampoo • I alternate between different dry shampoos, but I’m happy that this one comes in a pack with the Texture Spray in the NSale.

Straight Comb • I was influenced when I saw Kate from Small Things using this comb to comb each section of her hair before curling.  It really makes a difference!

Wet Brush • Nothing gets out tangles better than the Wet Brush. Its great for Jordan’s hair too! No tears and that’s a win!

Paul Mitchell Hair Spray •  I spritz with a light mist of hairspray before I curl it and after I’ve styled it to keep things from falling quickly.  This hairspray is a finishing spray that provides flexible hold, not a football helmet look.;)
