Top 5 Things I Do to Rest & Recharge

Thank you to Bare Necessities and ShopStyle for sponsoring today’s post.

I recently shared on Stories what I do on the weekends when I’m home alone and I got tons of feedback from y’all.

Whether you’re single, married, divorced, with kids or without, taking time to care for yourself is critical for your well-being.  The older I get, the more I learn that I don’t do well when things are too crammed together, overscheduled or chaotic.  I need that ‘white space’ in my life to unwind and decompress.

I’m choosing to look at my weekends as a gift, a much-needed time to relax and recharge so that I can be the best version of myself during the week.  My goal is to be a patient and present parent and I’m better able to do that when I’ve taken time for myself.

You don’t need to devote a whole weekend to self care, I’m not sure that’s realistic for any of us.  Rather, sometimes you steal away for 45 minutes of alone time before the rest of your house wakes up in the morning.  Or take an hour in the evening.

I’ve heard of couples taking turns on weekends where one parent is totally in charge on Saturday mornings, and one parent takes Sundays.

Whatever works for you, I hope you can carve out some time for yourself.  You know you feel better when you do.

TOP 5 THINGS I DO TO REST AND RECHARGE

ONE • ALLOW MYSELF TO VEG OUT

In today’s post, I’m sharing my top five things I do to rest and recharge for the week.  It should come as no surprise that rest is at the top of my list.  By Friday night, I’m too tired to go out or do anything productive.

My favorite thing to do is veg out on the couch, remote in hand and catch up on shows I was too busy to watch during the week.

Coffee Is Life Pajama Set

I’m crazy for Mad Men and Downton Abbey reruns, I like to hang with the Housewives, and I love cooking and decorating shows on HGTV.  Sometimes you just need that chill time to think about nothing and let someone else’s drama play out on T.V.

I’m already feeling better by the next morning and it’s so relaxing to sit outside and enjoy the quiet of the day.  I’ll pay attention to how the cup of hot coffee feels in my hands, listen to the sounds of the birds, and the rustling of the trees.

TWO • MEDITATE

Meditating is something that doesn’t come naturally for me, but I’ve been incorporating it into my daily routine.  I’ll simply sit quietly and give myself permission to stop after 5 minutes.  Somehow that makes the practice seem less daunting, and I often find myself sitting still for longer than 5 minutes.

I used to use an app to meditate, and I recommend that for beginners, but now I prefer the silence.

THREE •  JOURNAL

Journaling has been so therapeutic for me.  I’ve gotten so many emotions out on paper in the last year.  If you only have time for one thing in your day, I highly recommend journaling.  Just sit and allow the thoughts to flow freely and write them down.  There’s all kinds of things you might be surprised that come out.  And I love to look back on all that I’m grateful for and how far I’ve come.

Another simple self-care strategy is to put on your favorite pair of pajamas.  When you put on a good pair of PJ’s, you just feel more indulged and cared for.  Bare Necessities not only has all of your intimate apparel needs covered, they also offer the coziest and cutest pajamas sets.

This one with coffee cups is particularly up my alley, and I love how the sleeve says, “Coffee is Life.”  Amen to that!  If you’ve followed me for long, you know how important my coffee is to me.  One time I lost my mind and tried to give it up for a week.  I lasted two days!  And don’t get me started on my coffee creamer – Vanilla Caramel is the best! #3tablespoonsplease

And these flannel jammies are perfect for this time of year because they are nice and warm.  (If coffee isn’t your thing, they have so many adorable options to choose from-including martinis).

FOUR • SLEEP

And can we be honest? What are all parents lacking?  S L E E P !  Of course.  I’m sure most of us don’t get enough sleep on a daily basis, so I’m trying not to feel guilty when I sleep until 9:30 a.m. on a Saturday.  If you’re able to, and your body needs it, go for it!

Kiss Me Goodnight Pajamas

This adorable pair of pajamas is also from Bare Necessities.  How fun are the stripes and lips and “Kiss Me Goodnight” sentiment?!

FIVE • PLAN FOR THE WEEK AHEAD

Once I’m feeling good from relaxing and getting caught up on sleep, I love to get busy planning!  I’m a self-professed organizing nerd and it’s just something that makes me happy.

I’ll start planning my week by looking at my calendar and jotting down any appointments or commitments.  Then, I schedule in all the tasks I need to do to accomplish those things and my blog posts for the week.

Planning is more fun with stickers!  My inner 12-year-old girl lives on!  I get most of my stickers at the craft store when they’re on sale.  I almost bought some last weekend, but I told myself I need to use my current collection before buying more.  #crazystickerlady

It really feels good to lounge around in a great pair of pajamas while you do work.  Getting dressed can wait for later- or not at all if you’re gonna be home all day.

Sometimes, the kids and I have a “bed day” where we eat breakfast in bed and then just read, play on iPads, or hang out. It might only last a few hours, but it’s a fun way to hang together and ‘do nothing’.

Kiss Me Goodnight Pajamas

I’m a huge believer that everyone appreciates a good pair of quality pajamas; they’re the perfect gift for just about anyone! See our last Favorite Things party!  Ali-Shaun gifted me a pair of pajamas and I love them and think of her every time I put them on!
