Boy’s Baseball Bedroom Makeover

Welcome to a new week friends!  I hope you had a fantastic weekend!  I had planned to do another Amazon fashion try-on post Friday, but with Jordan being sick and my eye troubles, I didn’t get to it.  Being able to work from home, especially with young kids, is such a blessing that I never take for granted.

Of course, I have plans and things to do, but when kids get sick (or Mom), we have to let go of our plans and adjust our priorities.  I’m so thankful I can do that! It was a busy week anyway with December Loves, How to Host a Favorite Things Party, Just (the best) Sales, and Gifts for Him, Her and the Kids.

I’ll share my Amazon finds later this week, but today, I’m excited to share James’ baseball room!  When I told him I’d be posting his room today, he said, “you should have done that a long time ago!”  Thanks kid! We photographed his room right before Thanksgiving, and I’m excited to welcome you in!

JAMES’ ASTROS ROOM

James asked for a “World Series Championship” Astros room and boy did he get it!  We talked through the plan for the room together and I made sure to get his approval before moving forward with any big purchases.  It’s his room and so I wanted to make sure he liked everything in it and it felt comfortable to him.

I knew right away that I wanted to brighten the walls (they were a creamy white before) and add a splash of color and pattern in the wallpaper.  This Feathers wallpaper from Serena and Lily has been one of my absolute favorites forever.  I was so happy when I showed it to James and he said he liked it too.  It comes in other colors and I think the pattern is interesting and fun.

To save money and create a focal wall, we only papered the back wall of the room.  It took a good part of the day to hang because our wallpaper installers scraped the orange peel texture off the wall before putting up the paper.  That made a huge difference in how sleek the paper looks on the wall.

We also painted the doors and trim a happy blue that would coordinate well with the wallpaper and the Astros colors – navy blue and orange.  I have the trim in my office painted and I’ve always loved how that looked, so I wanted to try it in another room.  I went back and forth in picking the color – should it be more navy to go with the bed and Astros colors or more blue to compliment the wallpaper??  In the end, I really like the color we chose.

I think the bed was one of our first decisions in the room.  This room was previously a guest room when we only had one child, so it had our old King sized bed in it.  That bed took up a lot of space in the room and the dark brown leather headboard and footboard had seen better days.

We traded the King for a more appropriate Queen sized bed with navy upholstery and nailhead trim.  I think this is a bed that can grow with him for years to come.  We’ve been very pleased with the quality of the bed and the bold color.

When it came time to dress the bed, I called in the big guns because that’s where I got stuck.  I had originally chosen the solid navy coverlet and navy patterned sheets for the bed, but those sheets weren’t working with the wallpaper.  Aryn came over and suggested I go with plain white sheets, grey Euro pillows, then a buffalo check set of pillows and duvet at the end of the bed, finishing it off with an orange bolster pillow to tie all the colors in the room together. She is such a genius and definitely the help I needed to pull those details together!  The white sheets are the same ones we have in our master bedroom (that Aryn designed) and are the softest things ever, so we were easily on board with that solution.

Would you believe this was the first time I’ve ever taken anything to be monogrammed?!  Where have I been?!  James and I went down the street to a local monogram shop and chose his initials and this boyish font for the orange velvet pillow.  I love the charm and personalization it adds to the room.

We also kept his fan in there because he uses it sometimes and it coordinated with his old wooden dresser and lamp, and the new desk and bookshelf.

I had planned to add Astros decor to the room, but not necessarily framed jerseys!  We happened to walk into our gym on Father’s Day weekend and they were selling all kinds of sports memorabilia for the Dads at deeply discounted prices.  The jerseys also came with a replica championship ring (and James got a second ring at an Astros game). I think these jerseys and ring are as much a kick for Dad (or moreso) than they are for James;) I’m sure they will be cherished for many, many years and probably generations!

Because we already had this wooden desk and I liked the warmth it added to the room, we choose a coordinating desk and bookshelf to go with it. The navy lamp was part of a pair in our living room until recently when a rowdy toddler toppled the mate over.

The desk and bookshelf are ‘modern rustic’ with the wood and rod iron detail.  The desk doesn’t have drawers, but it has two shelves were we store paper and other things that don’t fit on the desk.

James uses his Dad’s old computer and does his math and Spanish homework on it, and also watches YouTube and plays video games up here.

The very last thing we bought for the room was this bright orange chair.  I love the pop of color it adds to the room and James likes that it’s comfortable with arm rests and swivels. He actually assembled most of it by himself!

The bookshelf is nice and tall with lots of shelving, but I need new bookends because these aren’t sturdy enough.

I’m happily raising little readers and James can almost always be found with a book in his hand.

I’ve said from the moment he was born that he’s just been a delight and it’s still true today.  I feel so very honored to have been chosen to be his mom and I pray I can live up to parenting task, especially now at his age when there are more challenges.

This boy means the world to me and I couldn’t be happier that he enjoys this room so much!  I wanted it to be a room that could grow with him and I think we met that goal.

Go ‘Stros!  We are so proud of our home team!

Where did you get the jerseys framed? Did you send them somewhere or take them somewhere local? I am in Austin and love the way yours turned out.

  6. What a great room for transitioning towards a “teenage” room! (I know he’s still a little young). Loving the Astros theme and colors, that orange pops and is so fun!!!

  7. Hi Megan! I love everything about the room. Can you tell me where you purchased the bed please… it’s gorgeous.

  8. I liked the orange pillow with a name on it!! it’s a cool idea, Megan, thanks. I think there is a bedskirt missing. Although, the room’s decor is absolutely beautiful. I added a white-colored Full Size Bed Skirt with Split Corners to my boy’s room and its finest. You can also go for it, apart from this I have a Split Corner Bed Skirt Queen for my room, so if you need suggestions. you can try them on that bed.
And one question I have to ask, where did you get that lamp, let me know.
