My Healthy Morning Routine

Good morning friends!  Now that we’re approaching the end of the year, things can get kind of hectic and it’s more important than ever to keep up with our health and fitness.  Ain’t no one got time to get sick and with all the holiday excitement and activities, we want to be on our A-Game!  I try to start my morning off on a healthy foot each day, and I’m happy to share my healthy morning routine with you!

MY HEALTHY MORNING ROUTINE

WAKE UP EARLY

Waking up early in the morning is of the best changes I’ve made in my life. We all get the same 24 hours in the day and with so much to do, it seems that there is never enough time to do everything.

When I wake up early in the morning, I have time to get an early morning workout in or get a jumpstart on the day when I am feeling the most energized and productive. Waking up early doesn’t mean I get any less sleep, it just means I go to bed earlier. When I used to stay up later, the only thing I would accomplish would be sitting on the couch watching TV during those late-night hours. Therefore, I felt like my day was shorter because I wasn’t getting as much accomplished.

Now, I start my day around 5:30 a.m. and get in bed shortly after getting the kids to bed.  By 9:00 p.m., I’m ready to hit the sheets, get in bed and read and relax.  I try to be asleep by 10 or 10:30.

MAKE THE BED

As soon as I get out of bed, I make it all pretty again.  It’s an act of self care to take care of not only yourself, but your home and the things in it as well. After all, this is where you live and spend so much of your time.  Your home should “rise up to greet you” as Oprah says. When I walk into my room and the bed is all made and lovely, I feel more calm and at peace.

And isn’t it nice to get into a freshly made bed at the end of the day?

WASH FACE & BRUSH TEETH

If I’m heading for a workout right away, I’ll just splash water on my face and save the face wash for the shower when I get home.  But, I always brush my teeth and my dentist recommended I use an electric toothbrush, which is gentler on my teeth and gums.

PREPARE WATER BOTTLES

We all know how important it is to stay hydrated throughout the day.  Every morning, I make three big water bottles so that I can keep track of how much I’m drinking and so there is never a sip of water far from me. I keep one in my bedroom, one in my office, and one downstairs in the kitchen so that they are always easily accessible and a visual reminder to drink up!

TAKE A MULTIVITAMIN

I’m also religious about taking a multivitamin every day. Try as I might, I know that I may not get all of the vitamins and nutrients I need every day from my diet so being able to take a multivitamin daily helps fill in those gaps.

Just like I recently changed my deodorant to an all natural one, I’ve taken the same approach with my multivitamin.  Did you know most vitamins use synthetic ingredients?  If you didn’t, it’s okay, I didn’t either. But, what that means is that your body isn’t absorbing the nutrients so it’s not really helping.  In fact, it could be upsetting your stomach!

I found a vitamin formulated with certified organic veggies & herbs, and fermented with probiotics and whole foods – making the nutrients more vital and available for your body to absorb.  The New Chapter Every Woman 40+ is gluten free, 100% vegetarian, with no artificial flavors or colors. When I looked at the back of the vitamins I had been taking, the ingredient list had “glucose syrup, sugar, and gelatin.” #oops

And, even better for me, New Chapter Every Woman 40+ it’s specifically made for women over 40 (I’m 43).  Especially since I’m getting older, I appreciate that this vitamin contains nutrients for bone, hormone and digestion support.  All the things we need to think about while being blessed to be on this planet awhile longer.

I also like knowing that I’m taking something good for my health and that it’s made with whole foods that my body understands how to digest.  If you’re younger, New Chapter also makes a variety of vitamins that might be more specific to you health needs.  And you can get these on Amazon at the same time you’re adding those fashion finds to your cart!  If you missed them, check out my Amazon fashion hauls here, here and the latest one here!

I take my multivitamin at the same time every morning so I’m in the habit and always remember.  The good thing is these are gentle enough to take on an empty stomach.  Do you take a multivitamin?

WORKOUT

On Mondays and Wednesdays, I do a 6am workout class, and on the other days, I wait until about 8am when the childcare opens, or go for a run in the evening.  BUT, my favorite days begin with a workout.

The great thing about doing your exercise first is that it’s over and done with for the day and you don’t have to think about it again. It also helps me eat better since I know I didn’t just spend all that time and energy to blow it, if you know what I mean.

EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST

After I get home and showered, I eat a healthy breakfast.  It’s usually a protein pancake, oatmeal or avocado toast with egg.  Y’all encouraged me to try this seasoning and I have to say, I love it as much as you do.  Thank you!

GET READY FOR THE DAY

I’ve talked a lot about taking time for YOU and getting ready for the day before, but I’ll reiterate!  Spending 15 minutes putting yourself together, applying some make up, brushing your hair and taking care to put on something you feel good and can change your entire mood.

Even if you feel like running around in athleisure all day, that’s fine, but make it something you feel great in!

MORNING PAGES

I’ve never been a big diary keeper, mostly for fear of my most intimate thoughts and feeling being shared unintentionally, but I kept hearing from several people I respect that it is a great way to start the day. Now, I will often write without censoring myself for a good 15 minutes in the morning and then just tear out the pages and trash them so that I don’t feel like I can’t write honestly.

It’s really amazing what getting your thoughts down onto paper can do for you. It’s similar to having a good conversation with a friend, and it feels so good to unload.  You might be surprised what comes out! Even if it’s not deep emotions, sometimes I’ll get clarity on a creative idea, blog post or project I’m working on.

    1. Hi! I’m a dental hygienist and just one word of caution (ok, a couple)- although I love electric toothbrushes, some people will push while using them. They can damage your gums/enamel if you push, so just hold them and aim where they need to go! Also, changing the heads every 3-4 months helps as the bristles can get hard and not as effective. ?

  1. Hey Megan!! I just ordered Morning Liquid Vitamins by MaryRuth on Amazon. It has about 1,500 reviews. It’s organic, vegan and sugar-free. I have no issues with swallowing pills, but lately i Just can’t stomach getting those horse/vitamin pills down. I also read that liquid vitamins are more easily absorbed by the body. I hope the taste is not bad!

    1. Oh I meant to mention that! I don’t like to take huge pills either, but these are easy to break apart with your hands into two so they are easier to swallow. Let me know what you think about the liquid!
