Microblading Eyebrows Review with VIDEO

Hi friends!! I hope you had the best weekend and a wonderful Mother’s day!  We certainly did and on Sunday, we did a big grocery haul and meal prep, so hopefully this week will go smoother with healthy lunches and dinners ready to go. That should make life so much easier with all the million extra things that have been on the agenda with the end of the school year approaching. But let’s get into today’s weekend recap and microblading eyebrows review!

WEEKEND RECAP

Some of my girlfriends and I kicked off the weekend early with a mom’s pool party!  It’s always so much fun with these ladies and I’m so thankful that not only has James made a great group of friends at school, but so did I!

I wore this fiesta red one-piece swimsuit that has a removable shoulder strap and of course, the pom pom scarf coverup!  It’s still only $8 (normally $30) with code HONEYPOMPARTY ! The pink sunglasses are a fun, inexpensive find at Target, only $15!

On Saturday, we had two back to back all-star baseball games and by the end of the day, I smelled like it!  #showerneverfeltsogood It’s really fun to watch these second graders play ball now that they actually know what they’re doing and can hit the ball. Four of our players hit the ball out of the ballpark!! It’s cute before that, but this is starting to get competitive and Ali-Shaun’s passionate baseball mama status has started to rub off on me!

For Mother’s Day on Sunday, we spent a couple hours at the pool.  That’s one of the things I like to do best with my fam and the kiddos love it too!

That maxi dress coverup is flowy goodness with pockets!  I’m wearing the XS and I got mine altered so that it wouldn’t be too long with flat sandals. The bikini (top & bottoms) is one of the keeps from my Dressing Room – Swimsuit Edition.  Jordan’s little pineapple/striped back swimsuit is just too cute too!  Love how she’s eyeing mama’s pina colada! ha!

Can’t go wrong with a Target suit for James! Speaking of Target, when I stopped in there they other day, they had some really summer clothes.  I grabbed these two tanks and tried them on when I got home.  I’m keeping both and they’ll be perfect for our already hot weather and during the summer! I’m wearing XS in both.

MICROBLADING EYEBROWS REVIEW

Last week we were talking about how to grow your eyelashes, and today it’s all about our eyebrows!  Last April I got my eyebrows microbladed for the first time and, after the initial shock wore off, I absolutely loved them!!  After a year, they had started to fade, so it was time for a touch-up!  This time, I’m taking you inside the room with me and sharing the whole process on video!  Big thank you to Shannon for filming this and editing the video!

You definitely need to read my first microblading post where you can see my tiny barely there ‘before brows’ and then the ‘after’!  In that post, I detail the whole process including how my technician measured my face and determined the best brow shape for my face!

For this annual touch-up, she kept the shape the same, but filled in the parts that had faded over time.

DOES MICROBLADING HURT?

Probably the biggest fear about microblading – aside from making sure the shape turns out perfect – is “does it hurt?”  The answer is not really.

My technician, Linh at Venetian Nail Salon & Spa applied a numbing cream to my brows which completely numbed that area.  The only thing I could feel was the pressure where she was touching. Later, when Lihn rubbed the ink into where she microbladed, it stung a tiny bit, but was not “painful”.  She waited about 15 minutes for the numbing cream to take effect before she started microblading.

WHAT IS MICROBLADING?

Microblading is a semi-permanent brow tattoo where the artist uses a handheld tool (regular tattooing is done with a machine) with tiny needles to draw fine hairlike strokes to mimic the look of real brow hairs.  The tool puts semi-permanent pigment into the skin, but doesn’t go as deep as a normal tattoo would.  The mircroblade only cuts into the first layer of your skin, whereas a tattoo goes down 3 layers.

Here you can see the tool she is using to make small, precise ‘cuts’ to my skin to mimic the look of eyebrow hair.

HOW LONG DOES MICROBLADING TAKE?

The actual microblading process is quick, probably 10 minutes.  But, if you are going for the first time, it takes about 30 minutes to measure your face and draw the outline of the brows, then 15 minutes to numb your brows.  Then, they have to rub the ink into your brows and repeat the process twice.

In total, you can expect to be there 1 to 2 hours.

HOW DO THEY MATCH YOUR BROW COLOR?

Lihn mixes colors to match the hair on your eyebrows, not the hair on your head. She cautions against using black because that can look too harsh and unnatural.

Sorry about the scary photos below! But, I wanted to give you an accurate portrayal of this process and a close up of the freshly microbladed brows!  If you look closely, you can see that I actually have no hair above and below my real brows and at the part closest to my nose.

HOW MUCH DOES MICROBLADING COST?

In Houston, microblading ranges from $500 to $1,000.   I drove to the outskirts of Houston to get mine done, so it was the low end and includes the 6-week touch up.  If you need a touch up within 6 months of the initial visit, it’s $100 and if you go 6-10 months after the initial touch up, it’s $200.
The microblading fades approximately 30-50% during the first week, so that’s why a touch-up is needed.  I’ve heard after you go the first time, and 6 weeks later, it can last up to about 18 months, but I went back at the one-year mark.

ONE WEEK AFTER MICROBLADING

After getting your brows microbladed, you need to let them heal because you essentially have a bunch of tiny cuts on your face.  I was given ointment to apply twice a day and advised not to get them wet for a couple of days.

A week later, without brow makeup, here’s what my microbladed eyebrows looked like.

DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING MICROBLADING

I honestly believe that microblading is one of the best things I’ve ever done for my face!  Especially since I started with little brows that wouldn’t grow!

If you’re interested in it, I say go for it, but you need to make sure you go to someone with a lot of experience, good credentials and positive referrals.  This is semi-permanent, so you need to do your research ahead of time because there is no quick fix if you aren’t pleased with your results!  In the Houston/Spring area, I can recommend Linh at Venetian Nail Salon & Spa because that’s who I’ve gone to twice!

  1. This was soooo helpful! Thank you so much for posting, very much wanting to do this soon! You look amazing!

  2. How much would you say your eyebrows had faded? I did mine last May/June & they’ve faded a little, but in order to save time & money was thinking of stretching it out as long as possible before doing a touch up, but not sure if that’s a good idea or not? What’s your opinion?

  3. I looked up the two piece swimsuit but it is not in the tagged post, not that I could find anyway. I just want to know what size you are wearing in the top and bottom. I think I’m going to order it. Love you blog!

  4. How about laser hair removal? I’m in the over 40 club and starting to get some facial hair I wish I didn’t!

  5. How did you decide on this specific technician and location? I’ve thought about doing this but not sure where to go (also in Houston).

  6. Which Venetian Spa location did you go to? I live in Mandeville, LA (across Lake Pontchartrain north of New Orleans) and have been asking around here for awhile for a recommended place to no avail. I am considering driving the 6 hours to Houston to have this done with Linh. Crazy, I know but it’s important to go to someone you know will do a great job.

  7. Hi Megan!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Your brows look lighter than the first time you did it. Did you do a lighter color?
