How to Grow Your Eyelashes

Good morning friends!  How was your weekend?!  We did lots of celebrating around here! It started on Friday night with my longtime girlfriend Trisa’s 40th birthday party, followed by the last baseball game of the regular season, and then on Sunday, I finally got to meet the newest member of our family- my sweet nephew Carter!  I’m totally smitten with him! I haven’t held a baby this tiny since Jordan!

Isn’t he sweet!!  I swear he’s giving me #babyfever!!

Today, I’m going to tell you my secret for getting long, full lashes!  First, there’s a Miracle Lash Serum that will actually help grow your lashes longer, and second, there are three things that give the illusion of longer, fuller lashes: 1) curling your lashes before applying mascara, 2) this amazing lash primer, and 3) the Full Fat Lashes Mascara!  If you follow these recommendations, I promise your lashes will look better than ever!

HOW TO GROW YOUR LASHES

I have to start at the beginning with a scary story of how I nearly lost all of my lashes to lash extensions about two years ago! When I was pregnant with Jordan and for awhile after I had her, I tried lash extensions for the first time and loved the look so much! I wore them for about a year and it was wonderful to not have to put on mascara and wash it off each night.

Lash extensions make your lashes look full, long and voluminous.  But, you have to get them filled every few weeks as they grow out and I’m one of those people that would pull mine out as they started to get loose. I’m the same way with my shellac.  After two weeks, I usually can’t help but peel that polish off!  #somebodystopme! After about a year or so wearing lash extensions, I was ready for a break from the money and the maintenance.  I pulled off several of the lashes until I was left with my own and man, was I in for a shock!

I barely had any lashes!!  I was so freaked out!!  My once full and naturally long lashes were short, brittle and barely there!  I was pretty much worried that I had ruined my real lashes forever.  *I must say, I’m not sure just getting lash extensions will ruin your lashes, but definitely do not pull them out- let them fall off naturally if you decide to get them!

After doing a lot of research about how to grow your lashes, I finally bought NeuLash because it had the best reviews and I could order it directly from Nordstrom as opposed to having to order through someone.  I shop at Nordstrom enough as it is, so adding something from their beauty department to my cart is really easy.

NeuLash literally saved my lashes! I know it sounds dramatic, but it’s true!  It’s a clear product that you put at the base of your lashes every night after you wash your face. It goes on clear and  doesn’t irritate your eyes at all. Within a few weeks I noticed my lashes getting longer. I was so thankful!! I could tell they were getting longer and longer by how far they extended past my eyelash curler when I’d curl them.  And the lashes also grew back where I didn’t have any.

I still love the look of lash extensions but given my experience, I’m afraid to ever try them again! The picture below is how my natural lashes look now after curling, mascara and primer.

HOW TO GET LONGER, FULLER LOOKING LASHES

Start By Curling Your Lashes

Before I put on mascara, I always curl my lashes with an eyelash curler.  Using a lash curler will help the lashes fan up and really open up your eyes.  Some people fear the lash curler, but it’s actually very easy to use!

Just open your eyes and put your lashes in between the ends of the curler.  Position the curler at the base of your lashes, then slowly and gently squeeze the curler closed.

I always curl before applying mascara because the mascara can end up pulling lashes out if you put it on first and it can also mess up/clump the mascara.

Apply Lash Primer Before Mascara for Long, Voluminous Lashes

Now that my lashes have grown back (and continue to grow), adding a swipe of mascara is all I need to look alive.

BUT, if you want big mama drama lashes, you have to try the Dior Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer.  Wow, that’s a mouthful, but it really works!

The Lash Primer goes on like regular mascara, except it’s white and dries clear.  I put it on my top and bottom lashes because it also has a conditioner to help condition your lashes.

I let the primer dry for about 15 seconds before applying mascara.  I don’t know how it does it, but the difference from when I use primer and when I don’t is dramatic! Try it for yourself and see!

Apply a Bold Mascara for Long, Voluminous Lashes

I don’t wear a full face of makeup everyday, but even when I go “au natural” I still wear mascara.  It just makes me feel like I look more awake and presentable.  Plus, it literally takes about 15 seconds, so it’s super fast and easy.

I’ve tried a few mascaras in my day, and always prefer the ones that are super black, with a wand and bristles that are kind of brushlike as opposed to more separate bristles. I feel like those are the best for giving you full, voluminous lashes without any clumping, and while keeping your lashes separated.

I apply a sweep of mascara to my top lashes, wiggling the brush from the bottom to the top. One coat is really all you need but for extra volume, or for photos, I will add a second coat.

Don’t forget to add mascara to your bottom lashes! That finishes the look!

  1. Hey Meghan, great post! I use strip lashes quite often because you get the fullness without the coating of mascara. I find it faster to apply strips than to curl, then prime then apply mascara. xx

    1. That’s a great idea! I should try those more- once you get the hang of appling them, it makes them so much easier to use!

  2. I use strip lashes too, and have been for years. So long, that I can actually put them on without a mirror if I have to. I love the Ardell wispies for the most natural length and volume. I used to use the individual lashes, but found that I was like you Megan, and would pull them out when they got loose, along with my natural lashes (oh, and my gel polish too, we’re in the same boat). Plus, I’m a stomach sleeper, so I would always end up with at least one wonky lash 🙁 Going to try this miracle serum though!

  3. I’ve used Latisse for a while and my lashes are long, dark, and full. Works crazy good. I only use 1 drop every other night now b/c it seems to work just as well and it saves me money. Wondering how latisse compares to Nuelash? How long does one tube of Nuelash last?

    1. I haven’t tried Latisse, so I’m not sure, but the NueLash lasts a really long time. I’m only on my second tube!

  4. Bonsoir,
J’utilise depuis des années de l’huile de ricin pour mes cils et sourcils. On peut aussi en mettre sous les yeux contre les cernes. J’en mets le soir avant d’aller me coucher, c’est gras mais c’est très efficace.

  5. The lash extensions look beautiful but are too much maintenance for me, not only the time but also a hassle as a stomach sleeper. I also felt like they destroyed my real eyelashes. Currently using a growing serum, but still am looking for good mascaras. The primer sounds like one to try!

  6. It might not be your fault your lashes were damaged, I only used lash extensions for a few months over last summer to be free of mascara for awhile and I NEVER pulled at them. When I took them off my naturally full and long lashes were almost gone! I panicked, then found neulash and they are beautiful now! I would say longer and fuller than they ever were.
