Your Guide to Youthful Skin After 40 | My Morning Skincare Routine

Good Monday morning to you!   I hope y’all had a great weekend! Ours was super special because the kids got baptized and James also got Confirmed and had his First Communion!  I’m not Catholic (I was raised non-denominational), but I know that Confirmation normally comes later for kids. They let James do all three at once since he’s grown up with a Catholic education and we took some classes and studies to prepare.  He was so excited for it and took it very seriously, which I really admired for a young kid.  Jordan screamed when the Priest poured water on her head, but he was so funny and said that was a sign of a strong life!

I often joke that I don’t know if these kids are keeping me young or making me age faster, but regardless, I still try to take care of myself so that I can keep up with them! Today’s post is all about my morning skincare routine and how I’m keeping my skin as youthful as possible for as long as possible!
Now that I’m in my 40s, #43thankyouverymuch! I know I need to make skin care a top priority.  The years do not discriminate, but there are things we can do to help our skin look as good as it can!  Of course, you know the big rules: avoid the sun and wear sunscreen, drink a ton of water and don’t smoke- and get a good night’s sleep.  A little makeup can do wonders too!

 Over 40 Skin Concerns

I’m trying to fade the wrinkles I have, prevent new ones from forming, lighten dark spots, and restore that youthful glow!  I have combination skin : oily at the cheeks and dry at my forehead and it’s sensitive and prone to breakouts with the wrong products or makeup or certain sunscreens.  #goodtimes Because I’m challenged in those skin areas, before last year, I never used to put anything on my skin- not even moisturizer or sunscreen unless I was going to the pool.  Suuuuper bad, I know!  But, I was scared to try new things after having bad experiences in the past.
It’s not dramatic to say that the Colleen Rothschild products have been a blessing to my skin and, since using them, my my skin has never been better!  I started v e r y slowly incorporating the skin care products. I had to tread lightly and try one at a time to see if my skin would have any adverse reaction.  Lucky for me, it only started looking (and feeling- that’s important!) better.
If you are like me and never had a grown up skin care routine, it can be overwhelming knowing where to start.  I’m going to share my morning routine with you below, which hopefully isn’t intimidating (just a few products), and at the bottom of the post, give you more suggestions on what products might be best for you to start trying.  Let me know in the comments if you have any questions!

 Morning Skincare Routine

Cleanser

It’s obviously important to keep our skin clean to prevent breakouts (life really isn’t fair fighting wrinkles and pimples!), but we don’t want to strip our face of its natural oils or you’ll end up overproducing those oils!

Here’s how I clean my face:

Splash with Water – On days I wake up early to work out, I only brush my teeth and splash my face with cold water to refresh my skin and help me wake up. I wait until I’m home from my workout to cleanse my face.  Otherwise, I feel like I’d need to wash again after the workout and that would be too much too close together.

Radiant Cleansing Balm–  When I get home or if I’m not doing an early morning workout, I’ve started cleansing my face with the Radiant Cleansing Balm
You guys, this stuff is seriously the bomb! And I wonder if you can appreciate this, for so long that I’ve had it, I only used it about once a week.   I liken it to fine China that you only pull out on special occasions, almost like it was too special to use or something! It feels so much like a daily spa treatment and I realize I’ve been silly to not use it more especially because my skin loves it!  I’ve come to my senses and started using it morning and night and the dryness at my forehead has improved. It really leaves my skin radiant looking- just like the name says!
How to use: Put small amount of the cleansing balm in your dry palms and rub it together to warm it up.  (A little goes a long way!) Then, using circular motions, rub it all over your face. The smell is heavenly and it feels so luxurious.  Then you get the muslin cloth (that it comes with) wet and wipe the product off of your face.
What I’ve been doing lately is, after coming home from a morning workout, rubbing the cleansing balm onto on my face, and then stepping into the shower and putting the warm, wet muslin cloth on my face and getting a steam effect before wiping it off.  It’s so so good and leaves your face feeling refreshed, but not tight.  It’s really like nothing I’ve ever used.

Even though this is my morning routine post, I’ll mention that I like to use a tiny dot of the Balancing Gel Cleanser at night to remove my eye makeup.  It gets it all off without leaving any residue behind!

Special Treatment

Age Renewal Super Serum is made for those of us concerned about the effects of getting older: texture, dehydration, elasticity, fine lines, radiance, and tone.  #raiseshand  If I even open my sunroof on a sunny day and enjoy the sun on my face for 15 minutes, I swear, in two days I’ll have more dark spots on my face.  This product helps reduce those photo aging affects.  I’ve noticed this on my own face!  I love the light blue color and pretty bottle, but that’s not why I love it, it’s just a bonus that the products look good sitting on my bathroom counter!

To Use: After cleansing, gently massage several drops of Age Renewal Super Serum onto face, neck, and décolleté.  It can can be used morning and evening.

Complete Eye Cream – I’ve definitely noticed those not-so-funny laugh lines at my eyes.  I tell myself to be happy about them because it’s a sign I’m a smiler!  But, this eye cream seems to be smoothing mine out because they aren’t as noticeable anymore.

To Use:  Apply Complete Eye Cream with your ring finger around eye area using a gentle patting motion. Use morning and evening for optimal results.

Vitamin C treatment – Many years ago, I remember hearing Dr. Oz say how important vitamin C was to our skin regimin to help fight against sun damage. I always wanted to try it and wasn’t sure if I needed a prescription or what.  Then, I kind of forgot about it until I saw the CR Vitamin C Treatment Complex.  I do have those dark spots I mentioned (hyper pigmentation) and this Vitamin C helps lighten those spots.

To Use: Gently massage an even layer of Vitamin C Treatment Complex over your face and neck.

Moisturizer

Sheer Renewal Cream– So, you remember I said I used to never use a moisturizer.  Well, my skin had had it! I needed it, but probably only on part of my face that was drier.  So, I started very cautiously applying this Sheer Renewal Cream as a moisturizer and also to help minimize fine lines, but then I realized how good my skin would look after I applied it!  Almost like a base, I guess you’d call it a ‘primer’ for your makeup!

To Use: Just apply Sheer Renewal Cream to your face, neck and décolleté with your fingertips.

Extreme Recovery Cream –  When I was in Colorado my skin got so dehydrated!  There’s no humidity there like we’re used to in Houston. For times like that, or when I can tell I need an extra boost of moisturizer, I use this extreme recovery cream.  No one is as surprised as me about how well my skin tolerates these moisturizers.  It’s probably saying, ‘finally she’s giving us some moisture!!’  The Extreme Recovery Cream is creamy and goes on light.  It immediately soaks into my skin and doesn’t leave it greasy or oily.  I also like how there’s no taste to it- I apply it on my lips and hands too!  Again, with all of these products, a little goes a long way!  And it doesn’t take long for you to notice the effects.  I bet people will start complimenting you on how good you look, but not really know what the difference is!

To Use: Gently massage into your clean face and neck.

If YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START

You might be like I was originally and have no idea where to start.  Until last year, I only used drugstore cleanser to clean my face and nothing else! I was lucky to meet the Colleen Rothschild team at a blog conference and get to discuss my skincare concerns and get personalized recommendations, so that helped a ton!

But, lucky YOU, Colleen has her personal recommendations online with her recommended routines.  That’s a great places to start, but you can also search by your own specific skin concerns (blemishes; fine lines/wrinkles; uneven skin tone; pores; dehydration).

MY personal recommendation would be to start with the Discovery Collection.  The Discovery Collection is a 7-piece kit that is the best way to get you familiar with the best selling Colleen Rothschild products, including my favorite Radiant Cleansing Balm.  It also saves you $55 off the normal price.

GET 20% OFF FULL PRICE PRODUCTS

It seems like every time you turn around somebody is talking about Colleen Rothschild beauty products, from young girls in their 20s to women much older. I’m glad to see young girls taking care of their skin because it’s never too early to start! And those of us with more ‘mature’ skin, we have different issues to be concerned about.

I have to admit, using the Colleen Rothschild skincare line feels very luxurious and self-indulgent!  I guess that’s why I was stingy with the Radiant Cleansing Balm! I consider it an investment in my skin, but totally worth it! My whole mantra for my blog is ‘take care of you’ and our skin care should be right up with diet and exercise at the top of the list!

Because her products or so pampering and high-quality, they would be a thoughtful gift to give to your mom or best friend for Mother’s Day. Especially the radiant cleansing balm, she will love that!

  1. Are you even serious?? These items added together are THREE HUNDERED dollars. I am pretty sure most of your readers cannot afford to spend that on a skin care regimen. This along with your other expensive clothing items are reasons why I won’t be reading your blog anymore. Seriously done with bloggers recommending items that are most likely FREE to you but cost us readers a ton.

    1. Hi Megan! Thanks for weighing in. The products do add up, so I always recommend using a coupon code or waiting for a sale. Also, you should check out the post I just did with stylish finds at JC Penney- the clothes are seriously cute and won’t break the bank!

  2. What a happy day! Welcome to the family, James & Jordan! I converted to Catholicism 19 years ago. The faith has been such a gift to me. I’m at Prince of Peace in NW Houston. Where do you attend?
I may need to try the vitamin C cream. I crank open that sun roof every chance I get. Oh, those sun spots!!
Have a blessed day! Off to get ready to go see the movie Paul with some of my Catholic WE sisters!

    1. Thank you so much Michelle! We go to James’ school church. Right now it’s being renovated, so our services are being held in the gym. Have a great day at the movies! I went yesterday with James!

  3. Your recommendation makes me want to try this line! I went to order the Discovery Collection, put in your discount code, and guess what… the 20% off applies, so the cost is only $76! I was surprised the discount applied. Looking forward to trying the Colleen Rothschild line. Have a beautiful week!

  4. Congratulations on your babies accomplishments in the Catholic church! Proud moments for you and your husband as well!

Thank you for writing this post, I too never used to use any moisturizer, and am prone to breakouts #whosaidowningabusinesswaseasy. Anyway, as I get older, I start seeing more lines, spots and other lovelies that I don’t care for! My husband and I are river rats during the summer, and no I find myself hiding in the shade and under big hats all the time. I’ll be checking into this skin care line!

    1. It was such a special day! I’ll never forget how excited James was to take communion for the first time! I’m with you on the hats! I always wear a visor or hat anytime I go to the pool!

  5. I started with the Discovery Kit over a year ago bc I didn’t know where to begin. I ended up loving the Detox mask the most. And have also grown to love using the cleansing balm at night, and the gel cleanser in the morning. I agree the products are pricey. If I purchase them, I always wait for a good sale. Otherwise I ask my hubby or mom to get them for me for Christmas or birthday gifts 🙂

  6. Love all the CR products! I have pretty much everything and I’m obsessed. I also love that CR always offers promo codes. You should try the oil as well, it’s another great product. In addition the hydrating mask and charcoal masks are great facial treats! I found all these products from reading both yours and Cassie’s blogs so thank you for sharing!

    1. I use those too- just not usually in the morning- well, sometimes the oil in the morning! That’s one of the first things I got hooked on! It’s so funny how good the oil is for my skin, when I’m prone to breakouts!!

  7. Since you AND Cassie both love these products…and I will be 42 this year…I’m going to give it a try. The Discovery Collection sounds like a great way to begin – thanks so much!

  8. That’s right- I just remembered this is your morning routine. I use the oil and masks at night or on the weekends : )

    Have a a good week!

  9. Curious if you ever tried Rodan and Fields amd how it compares to these products… the balm looks amazing, and I to at 41 looking to slow down the aging. I love your blog, keep it up!! 🙂

  10. I finally made the plunge. I ordered the discovery collection on your recommendation (and used the 20% to boot)! I’m excited to give this 46-year old skin some luxury spa treatments. Thanks so much! And blessings to James and Jordan on their special day.

  11. I was raised Catholic but attended a Presbyterian church for a while. I returned to the Church and, after 40 something years of marriage, my husband converted to Catholicism. He doesn’t know why he waited so long. It’s a blessing for us to all be a part of the same church. What a special day for your children to become a part of this Christian faith. I believe that, what one’s denomination is, it’s a life-changing, vital event.

  12. Just started with the discovery kit. This is probably a weird question but do you use the Muslin cloth everytime? Do you just have one? Do you wash in
    Washing machine? Love your blog!!!

    1. Thanks so much Keri! I only have one, but you can buy more at lots of places (CR sells 3 for $19- https://rstyle.me/n/c3hietpz4e) and I probably should since I’m using mine daily now! I rinse mine clean every night and hang it to dry on the towel holder. Then throw it in the washing machine with the whites about every 5 days or so!

  13. I am 50 & have to take prescription meds daily & have always used skin care products but usually not cheapest nor most expensive & with all the things in life, my skin worsened as I aged liked to that of teenage years & dermatologist didn’t help a lot either but my massage therapist suggested Burt’s bees & CR & I was puzzled on what to get 1st & so I tried the kit & add one thing at a time since I have sensitive. My skin looks better & feels better & I tried to get things on sale. CR staff answers your questions.

    1. I’ve found them to be extremely responsive with any questions also! So happy to hear you’ve found something that works for you!
