30 Healthy Habits for 2018 & Best of Decor/Organization 2017

How did that first day of 2018 treat ya?! Because I played old lady and went to bed early on NYE, and yet still slept in, I woke up feeling like a champ! My mom came over, which gave me a chance to get a good workout in on Day 1!  Pretty good start to the new year if you ask me!

Starting a new year can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. I say don’t put too much pressure on yourself to figure out your life or what you’re doing immediately if you haven’t already been contemplating those things. It’s okay to head slowly into the new year, get settled in, and then get about setting and accomplishing those goals and kicking butt and taking names!

If you are ready to start making some small changes that ultimately add up to big results, try any of the 30 healthy habits below!

30 Healthy Habits 2018

30 Healthy Habits for 2018

  1. Clean out your fridge – I mean take ALL the food out and get it all nice and soapy clean.  Throw away that moldy cheese. Rearrage.  Start fresh.
  2. Get a medical and dental checkup – Your health and wellness is your most important asset, aside from a clear mind! Don’t take it for granted.
  3. Write out your calendar for the year and keep it updated – Get ahold of all those sports schedules, appointments, vacation days and write them in so they don’t sneak up on you.
  4. Set your top 3 priorities for each day – Then do those things first.
  5. Read for 30 minutes before bed – If you have something enticing to read, it’ll help you get into bed and get off the electronics.
  6. Go to bed early – So you can . . .
  7. Wake up early – Start your day YOUR way instead of letting the day run you.  We always say we don’t have enough time, but we can make time if it’s important.
  8. Make your bed – It only took me 40 years to get into the habit, but it’s a great small accomplishment to start your day.  And getting into a freshly made bed at night feels so nice.
  9. Exercise – Goes hand in hand with #2 (above).  It’s like free therapy and will not only make you feel better on the inside, but look better naked.
  10. Stretch – Loosen those tight muscles and increase blood flow.  Remember how limber you were as a child?
  11. Take a walk outside – It’s good to get some fresh air each day!
  12. Eat fruits and vegetables every day – That’s good, healthy fuel for your body.
  13. Drink water – Staying hydrated is good for your skin, weight loss, energy, reducing headaches and flushes out toxins.
  14. Take a mulitvitamin – Chances are, we’re not eating enough of the micronutrients we need in our food, so a multivitamin helps you get those vitamins and minerals in.
  15. Eliminate cigarettes, sodas, and fried food – Just so bad for you!
  16. Meal plan and grocery shop on Saturday – Or pick the day that work best for you, but I find planning, shopping AND cooking in one day is too much.
  17. Meal prep on Sunday & Wednesday – Prepping meals in advance reduces cooking time on the daily.  This is a lifesaver in my house because my toddler is usually very clingy around dinnertime and it’s hard to cook with her like that.
  18. Keep healthy snacks on hand – Or you’ll eat whatever you can get your hands on and it’s probably not going to be all that good for you.
  19. Clear off your kitchen counters – I don’t know how ALL THE THINGS end up here but they do and it makes me crazy.  When I clear them off, I’m a much happier person.  All my son’s things go in a bin on the stairs for him to put away.
  20. Scrub your sinks until they shine – It will just brighten your day.
  21. Pay all your bills on time – And you won’t have any late fees or nagging feelings about unpaid bills. I use auto pay everywhere I can and calendar the bills on my phone.
  22. Clean out your purse weekly and keep your cash neat – Treat your money with respect and it will honor you back.
  23. Trash all paper clutter you don’t need – I keep very little paper.  Most things you simply don’t need to keep. For example, you don’t need manuals, they’re online.
  24. Unsubscribe from emails/publications you don’t need – I use unroll.me for emails and it’s awesome! Most magazines I read online now.
  25. Turn off the tv – We do this often after school until after bedtime.  It helps keep the energy calmer in the house so James can focus on homework and play.  TV is also the biggest time waster if you’re looking for more hours in your day.
  26. Listen to music – I’ll listen to zen or classical music instead of tv during homework time and also play fun music when I’m blogging or running to keep the energy high.
  27. Replace negative self-talk with positive affirmations – We have to stop being so hard on ourselves and start talking to ourselves like we would our own kids or best friend.  You are beautiful, strong, capable of more than you can ever dream of, valued, important, smart and kind.  Tell yourself that everyday, every hour and let it sink in.  It’s the truth!
  28. Brain dump everything on your mind onto a piece of paper, organize into categories, prioritize, get them done – My mind is like a computer with too many windows open, so brain dumping is my way of clearing the decks and capturing everything so I’m not worrying about forgettting.
  29. Buy fresh flowers – They will freshen your day!
  30. Be kind – And don’t take things personally.  It’s probably not about you. So be nice, you never know how much your kindness might mean to someone.

  1. Great post Megan! I love all of these healthy habit suggestions especially because they are not complicated to implement! Over the past year you inspired one of my biggest changes…waking up early! Again, it’s quite simple but it has had a huge impact on my well being. Our mornings are crazy around here because I have to get 3 kids ready for school all by myself. I started getting up an hour before the kids so I have some time to wake up slowly with a cup of coffee, think about the day ahead and just breath before the chaos starts! I read my favorite blogs, make my to do list for the day and sometimes even squeeze in a 5 minute exercise! I can’t tell you what a difference this has made, not just to my sanity, but just to the overall function and productivity around these parts! So thank you friend! PS, I am glad to know I wasn’t the only “old lady” who stayed in NYE and went to bed early, lol!

    1. Happy new year Kerri! Those morning kid routines can be so rough- trying to get everyone out the door, all dressed and on time! I’m sharing my new morning routine tomorrow and it sounds similar to yours!

  2. Thank you for keeping your blog material relevant Megan. I follow a couple of blogs and yours is still refreshing and interesting. Thanks!

    1. That’s the best compliment you could give Rebecca. I really appreciate you noticing my efforts to do just that! Hope 2018 is your best year yet!

  3. Hello, Megan. This post is really feeling so perfect to me right now! Thanks for spelling it all out, I plan to implement and embrace so will be referring back to it! You have such a fun mix of health home family and cute stuff. I’m working on finding joy in less, and some blogs are all about stuff. I appreciate you mixing it up.

  4. I love this list! Thank you so much! I’m going to really look through these again and pick a few to really focus on. Happy New Year!✨

  5. Great list, Megan! I really liked #23! Even though I knew that about manuals, I didn’t think about it, till I read your post. I’m especially drawn to your organizational skills, as my hubby and I launched a travel blog last January. It’s mainly his baby, but my goal is to do more of the organizing, and keeping track of everything. I’m really looking forward to your future articles on it. I would like to say that you and Cassie from Hi Sugarplum are my favorite bloggers. I have been with both of you for many years, and feel you are as sweet in person, as you are on here! Thanks for all the work you put into each post (I completely understand what it’s like)!
