Help Me Pick a Dress for NYC!

Hey there! I’m back from my talk with the mom’s group at St. Anne’s Church and so happy and relieved it went well! I prepared all week for it and I was a bundle of nerves the morning of the event!   Allllll those negative thoughts kept popping into my head about how it wouldn’t be any good and I’d be stuttering all over the place with awkward pauses.  Isn’t it just like the enemy to put those kinds of thoughts into our head before we do something that takes courage?

black shirt dress

I read your comments about what fashion topic I should share and went with great, affordable basics for fall and how to mix and match them.  I embraced that part of the talk with ease because that’s something I’m super comfortable with.  But, I wanted to share more and open my heart about how God has worked in my life and I wanted to encourage these younger moms to take care of themselves and make themselves a priority in their life.  With juggling so many roles and responsibilities, it’s easy to get burned out and feel overwhelmed.  That was the part I felt nervous and vulnerable about.  I just hoped what I said would resonate and be well received.

The women I spoke to were so inviting and genuine and kind, and ended up being wonderful to talk to.  We had a lot of interaction and questions/answer and chatted so long we went overtime!  I have to thank you for sending supportive messages to me on Stories the morning of, it really helped get me through it, knowing you were rooting for me!  A lot of you asked if I recorded the talk, and unfortunately, I didn’t, but I can put together a fall basics and mix & match post for you!

OUTFIT FOR BH&G IN NYC

My next event coming up is waaaay less scary!  I’m heading to NYC for the Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker event (thank you for the invite BH&G!) and Cassie and I will take the opportunity and spend an extra day seeing the city and a show and eating everything in sight! #thatsmygirl

Of course, I’ve been on the hunt for something new to wear to the actual event.  It’s held indoors and the invite says, “come dressed to impress, whatever reflects your unique style – from jeans and a nice top to anything that represents you and your brand.”  I’ve been looking at dresses, skirts and jumpsuits since I don’t get as many opportunities to wear those at home.

But I’m still not sure I have a clear winner.  I’d love to hear if you have a favorite!

J Crew tweed blazer navy skirt

Ruffle Skirt 00P ⋅ Blouse 0P ⋅ Jacket 00P

This skirt has haunted me since I first tried it on in my latest dressing room post in bright pink!  You know you want something when you can’t stop thinking about it! It’s fitted on top with two tiers of ruffles on the bottom.  Even though it’s a wool blend (and I cannot wear straight wool- too scratchy) this one feels fine and didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t grab the pink one initially because it was too big, even in 00P, but I was so drawn to it that I had the alterations lady take a look and she said she could alter it!

With the navy, I liked this blouse and tweed jacket so much! I felt like a real, grown-up, stylish lady in it!  I think it’s a great work outfit, but since I work from home, I can’t justify the cost of the jacket. 🙁  I don’t think I’d get that much wear out of it for the price.  If you work at an office where you wear suits often, you might consider it.  It’s absolutely darling on and the frayed tweed fabric detail is uber chic.

The jacket looks great with jeans and a simple white peplum tank too.

But the bright pink is so much more fun than navy!  This is the one that’s been in my dreams lately!  You can see in this picture where the alterations will be at the hips.  I like it with the white blouse, but I’m a sucker for eyelet or anything that resembles eyelet.  I’m wearing a regular nude bra with it and don’t feel like it needs a camisole underneath.

I may take this to NY with me, but I have another event coming up in October that I think this skirt would be perfect for. (P.S. There’s currently 6 seats left and you can use my code HONEYWEREHOME for 20% off your ticket before October 1st).

And I really can’t wait to pair this skirt with black tights, black booties and a solid black fitted top with it this winter.  Would be really fun for a holiday party!

soft white dress

Fit & Flare Dress TTS, 0P

This creamy white dress with contrasting black trim felt very classy on, but still modern with the bell sleeves.  I’d love to see it dressed up with a statement necklace.  It also comes in navy with black trim, but the ivory makes more of a statement.  And it’s lined so you won’t have to worry about it being see-through. The dress fits TTS everywhere, but I’d have to take the waist in a tad for a perfect fit.

plum keyhole dress

 Choker Dress  2P

The pretty plum color on this one stopped me in my tracks – it’s so perfect for fall!  I loved the classic fit and flare cut with the loose fitting mock neck and small v cut-out in front.  It looks so much better on, than the photo online!  The fabric feels amazing on and it’s extremely comfortable and I’m also a fan of the little cap sleeve.  I felt like this dress would also be perfect for dinner with hubby’s work colleagues too.  It fits TTS, but I am having it taken in slightly through the waist and hips and shortened as a personal preference.

black white purple dress

Dress SP

Somehow this dress reminded me of the city at night, like all the buildings lit up. It’s so soft and silky and very lightweight. It’s got navy and purple in it, but the purple isn’t at bright as the online photo, it’s more subdued.  Very pretty!  I can see this dress transitioning well into the cooler months with a fitted blazer on top.

jumpsuit

Jumpsuit 2P

I don’t feel like this jumpsuit photographed very well because you can’t see the wide waistband detail or the detail on the sleeves.  It’s actually so, so cute in person and I’m always crazy for a well-fitting jumpsuit!  This one fit perfectly on top in 2P (so actually runs a little small), but was a little too big in the waist and through the legs.  I’m crazy for the silhouette though, so I’m considering having it altered.  I probably wouldn’t wear this to the BH&G event, but maybe for the show and dinner afterwards.

Loft ruffle dress

Ruffle Hem Dress 0P 40% off

Oh my word, this dress is darling in person and feels amazing on!  It’s kind of hard to tell from the photo, but it has a slight ruffled collar and sleeve! It’s too big on me, but if they would’ve had 00P, I would’ve snatched it up in a heartbeat!  Like the basic black t-shirt dress y’all have been loving, this one is also super versatile and would end up being a staple in your closet for any time you want to look chic and put together and also feel great!  It’s so flattering on because the material is thicker and skims your body perfectly!

black lace bodice dress

Lace Fit & Flare Dress  0P

I ordered a few things that arrived at the house to try on too.  This is a cute fit and flare dress with a gorgeous crochet detail on top. The mock neck is darling as are the little ruffles on the sleeve.  I’m not as crazy for how the top meets the skirt and think it might look better with a belt.  But, it definitely fits TTS without any alterations.

Ruffle Fit & Flare Dress XS

floral keyhole dress

Ruffle Fit & Flare Dress XS

I don’t typically wear a lot of pattern in my wardrobe (except stripes!), but I do love a floral dress!  Although this style could say spring, the darker background and print make it more fall appropriate.  We’re seeing lots of ruffles these days, but I like how these ruffles are on the more subtle side.  I also feel like I could dance the night away in this dress. I know I’d be comfortable in it all day.

tweed shorts romper

Tweed Romper XS

I absolutely love this romper! It’s tweed and the colors are vibrant and the pattern is stunning! I absolutely love that it has pockets and this little faux leather lining adds to the level of chicness! It’s also great because it’s more structured so it looks dressier, even though it’s a romper. This is a serious contender for the event. I think it would look amazing with a pair of black heeled booties.

navy shorts romper

Macy Tie Romper XS

I adore this contender also! It’s silky smooth fabric in a gorgeous saturated navy blue. It looks like a skirt from the front but is actually shorts underneath. The front buttons closed and the back has a cute key hole cut out. You need to wear a racerback bra because the back is slightly cut in, super cute for showing off your back. I think you’d really be able to dress this up with a statement necklace and heels.
I hope y’all have a great day!  I know it’s a hard turn, but I couldn’t end today’s post without acknowledging the heartbreak in Puerto Rico and Mexico.  We are thinking about you and our prayers are with you. ♥

  1. I was all in on the dress that you thought of as the city at night and THEN I got to the tweed romper. My vote would be the tweed romper for the event and the black jumpsuit for a night on the town.

As a side note, I LOVE that tweed jacket. Seriously considering it because I could definitely wear it for work but I love how it pairs with jeans too.

    1. I like it with jeans too. It’s funny because I’m still thinking about that jacket!! I’m trying to justify the cost . . . maybe it would be something you could wear for years, so classic and chic!

  2. So funny! I 100% agree with first comment! Love that tweed jacket/skirt combo! You could wear that jacket for years! Tweed romper is perfect on you! Darling post, as usual!

  3. I feel the same as Nichole, I immediately thought the city at night dress screamed you the most, but that romper…fantastic!

  4. Oh man, those are some great options! I like either the first outfit or the pink romper! Those are things most wouldn’t wear every day, so they’re special.

PS: I did a food tour in NY like you girls did last year, after your recap. It was the BEST IDEA!

  5. Megan, you will look adorable in any of these gorgeousl fashions, but with your beautiful brown eyes, I vote for the white dress. Everyone wears black……go with a classic. And yes, the tweed romper is great too, and the black jumpsuit. But I think you will stand out in the white!

  6. City to night dress, tweed romper and black jumpsuit. Of course, you look wonderful in all of them, so you can’t go wrong with any of them. Have a wonderful trip!

  7. Goodness you look adorable in all!!! But my #1 fave is the first look you put together – the tweed jacket (which is crazy cute), the white blouse and black ruffle skirt. For evening that black pantsuit screams NYC! Have fun!!!

  8. I like the black lace fit and flare dress and the tweed romper. I love the cream dress, but saw another blogger post about it 🙂 I like the ruffled skirt and tweed jacket, but I thought they were a bit busy together. Have fun in NYC!

  9. Tweed romper 10000%!!! But the choker dress and dark floral are so dang flattering, they need to jump into your wardrobe too 🙂

  10. I love that tweed romper on you! Did you think that it felt heavy or itchy? Just wondering because I’m thinking of it for a rehearsal dinner that I need to attend this month!

  11. My top picks are the tweed J. crew blazer, tweet romper and navy ruffle fit and flare dress. The black romper is cute but I think you have one from last year you had tailored that I liked better?

  12. I LOVE all of these!!! I agree that the romper is the best choice for the event. You look beautiful in everything! You are such a darling!
