Magnolia Market Decor

How was your weekend, friends?! I feel like all we did was eat! but it was nice to go out a few times for a change since we don’t get to do that much.  Unlike Jordan who eats everything, James is a super picky eater, so he doesn’t really enjoy going to restaurants. Lucky for him, we went for ice cream & frozen yogurt this weekend!  Two things of course he likes!

And we’re always running around at the park, and couldn’t help but share one of my favorite recent pics of Jordan!  She’s such a toddler now and it’s killing me!!!! ????
Today’s post is the kind I’ve come to enjoy with you where I just share random bits of things going on over here that don’t necessarily fit into a dedicated blog post.  I like these posts because they are so casual, like we’re having a phone chat that naturally goes in lots of different directions.

First up, did you have a fun Cinco de Mayo?  In Houston, it’s pretty much required #ohdarn to celebrate with Mexican food and margaritas, so we got together with our neighbors and did a potluck block party.  I shared some on Stories, but didn’t get any pictures!  Ug!  I did get a pic of the easiest nachos ever that I made.

To make:

-Preheat oven to 350
-Brown 1 lb of lean ground beef or turkey, drain, then add 1 packet of taco seasoning and 2/3 cup water, bring to a boil until the water has evaporated.
-Meanwhile, heat 2 cans of refried beans until warm
-Spread restaurant style tortilla chips on the bottom of a baking sheet and it’s okay if they overlap
-Layer the refried beans on top
-Then layer the meat
-Then add 1 package of Mexican style cheese
-Top with sliced pickled jalapenos
-Bake for about 10 minutes or so until the cheese is melted.

So yummy!

Speaking of parties, I have a fun party post coming up for you on Thursday with all my easy tips and tricks for getting party ready without losing your mind.  This kind of party is much easier and takes a lot less planning than the kind of garden party we had for Jordan’s first birthday.  Will make getting together with friends and neighbors outside much less daunting!

This one could also be called, “Have I lost my mind?”

Last month, I shared 5 Fitness Goals to Reset & Recharge Your Mind & Body and #1 on my list was wake up at 6 am, just to have some guaranteed time to myself before the rest of the house woke up. I like to start my day ‘ahead of the game’ as opposed to feeling like I’m playing catch-up, so the extra hour helps that.  I also wanted to do 3 days of cardio a week, in addition to one day a week of overall strength training with my trainer.

Well, I realized that I wasn’t making those cardio sessions a part of my day.  I’m sure you busy women and moms know how hard it is to fit a workout into your day when it’s already full of other responsibilities and you’re trying to juggle the kids nap/sports/after school activities too.  So, what else to do besides wake up an hour earlier, in my case 5am, to get that workout in before the day gets away from me.

I’m not gonna lie, the first week pretty much sucked, but I did it (waking up maybe not at 5am on the dot, but by 5:20) and running outside and doing my MommaStrong workouts to help correct my ab separation.  You can easily test yourself at home for ab separation and find one way to correct it here.
I plan to do a detailed post about waking up early next month, after I’ve done it consistently and can talk about it with some sort of knowledge behind me.  What time do you wake up?
Over Spring Break, along with our trip to Galveston, we went to Waco for the day and of course, stopped at the Silos and Magnolia Market.  I picked up a few things there that I’ve been meaning to show you.  I could’ve bought so much, but I showed restraint, knowing I could always shop online later if I really had to have something I missed.

These flowers are such good quality.  The big white florals and huge and nice and thick and you can bend them and shape them how you want and they stay.  The little tulips feel like real flowers and aren’t cheap and plasticy like some faux florals.

For now, our Home sign is hanging on this little patch of wall right by the half bath.

In the mudroom, we added a little galvanized magazine holder and the welcome sign from Magnolia Market.

Mother’s Day is Sunday!! Time for us mommas to get pampered I say! ? Maybe I can ask for a massage gift certificate to go with all these early morning workouts I’ve been doing! I shared my fun gift guide with you here, but already went and got this adorable beach/pool bag! And, I just ordered this cute blue striped swimsuit with red ties! #happyMothersDaytome! I’ll be sure to let you know how it fits when I get it.
Lots of you have been asking me about my microblading results, so if you missed it, I shared all the details in this post.  If you have any questions, just let me know!
I got a great email question recently from one of my readers asking what books I like to read and so I figured I could share a few with you every now and then.  I typically read self-help books or parenting, decor, and cookbooks, but I’d love to read more fiction so please send your recommendations my way!
I’m currently reading 10% Happier and really like it.  Being a former broadcast journalism major and newish meditator, it’s particularly intriguing to me.  It’s mostly about the author’s journey to meditation, but gives lots of behind the scenes details about the news media/news stories and news anchors you’d be familiar with.  I really liked hearing his take on Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra too since he was able to meet and interview both of them.
I loved French Kids Eat Everything, espeically given my son’s pickiness, but I realize in reading that book that they way we tend to eat is really such a cultural thing.  It’s so interesting to see how the French do it differently than most of us here in America.  I remember when Jordan was first born and my French friend wanted to bring us dinner and she kept asking me, “what time do you have dinner?” and I kept stammering about how it was different each night depending on what events we had going on and she kept saying, “well what time normally?” and I had no “normal” answer for her!  I could tell it seemed foreign to her that I couldn’t give her a standard dinner time for our family and I felt a little bit embarrassed about it.  But that was our life then.  Now, we eat at 5pm because that’s Jordan’s dinnertime and we eat at the dining table as a family.
Similarly, I really enjoyed Lessons of Madame Chic, Jennifer Scott’s memoir of the time she spent with a French family as a foreign exchange student.  I also loved her follow-up At Home with Madame Chic, and credit that book for helping our family make sit-down lunches and dinners, with a properly set table, a priority.
Eat That Frog had a big impact on me too, and now with a baby at home and what feels like so little time to do things, I’m always asking myself, what’s the most important thing I need to accomplish today?

If you’re interested in more book recommendations in the future, let me know! I’d love to hear yours too!

  1. Ok, so I am child-free so take this with a grain of salt. I get up at 4:40am MWF to take a 5:15am Pure Barre class. I am a morning workout person. If I don't do it then, it may not happen. Tuesday and Thursday I am up at 5am for cardio. Weekends are a little more flexible, but I'm still up at 6am on Saturday and not much later on Sunday. We are early morning people for sure. With our luck that means that when we do have a kid, they will be a night owl…

    1. I've been sleeping in more on the weekends, but I think it's better if you can stick closer to the weekday routine so it's not such a jarring Monday morning!

  2. Love the random posts. James looks super happy to be eating that huge ice cream cone! LOL
Your bedroom is so serene…love it.
Picky eaters? Fortunately mine were picky in that they were "overly healthy" eaters, hated typical kid's fare and condiments FOREVA! I know it's helpful to introduce new foods several times, some times it takes 7 or more tries for a child to finally like something. Could also be a "texture" thing. I am sure you've asked him before, but he's of an age where he can tell you WHY he doesn't like a particular food…taste, smell, texture. Might help you find things he will eat. Sometimes "hiding" them in other foods helps too. I know he's not a huge smoothie fan, but he might never know that there is zucchini in those yummy muffins put in his lunch box! Sometimes you can get them to try things when presented in a fun way. Pinterest is loaded with ideas as you know.
Love what you brought home from Magnolia. Need to take a look at their website again.
And, can't remember if I had told you before or not, but two books I highly recommend for young moms are The Best Yes and Present over Perfect, Unglued comes in a close third. Wish I had read them earlier, but they hadn't come out yet. LOL

  3. Love this post! A little bit of everything. I am European and I still struggle with my american hubby's eating habits or lack of…Growing up we always had dinner as a family together at 5pm. I still miss that routing when everyone sit down together no matter what. I love your black interior doors. I need to convince my hubby that we need to paint ours too.

  4. Megan, you are going to love waking up at 5 am. I've done it since September almost daily, I go out for my run at 5 and then get back home, shower and get on with my day. I also have a 1 year old and and almost 11 year old and work full time, so being able to get my workout before going to the office is awesome. I used to skip workouts because in the afternoon all I wanted to do after work was be with my family. I know it is hard, but once you make an habit, you will love it and you will find to be more consistent with your work outs 🙂

  5. I get up at 4:30am so I can do an at home workout, write in my gratitude journal, meditate and have coffee before I have to get myself ready for work and my kids ready for school. I love early mornings and it makes a huge difference to have that time at the start of my day. My kids are a bit picky too…I know it's my own fault (as my mother likes to point out lol). The French really do know how to do things when it comes to eating!

  6. Love the 4:30/5:00 am workout girls! In my 5:30/6 am SoulCycle classes they call us Rockstar Roosters. With a one year old in the house and working full time, if i don't get it done the morning, it is not going to happen. Stick with it and before you know it, you will be up before the alarm goes off to get going.

  7. I wake up everyday at 4:15 so I can head to the gym and get back by 6 when the rest of the house starts stirring. It was the only way I could guarantee my workout and I love it, it took a little getting used to and I go to bed by 9:30 during the week but it's worth it. I've been doing it for about 7 years now and I have no plans to change it!
