How To Fold & Organize T-Shirts

While the majority of our household organization is my territory, even my husband gets the urge to clean out and organize in the new year!  He’s been on a roll with his home office and closet #gobabe!, and I thought it might be useful to you if I showed you how I organized his t-shirt drawer.

You guys know I’m crazy for the Kon Mari Organizing book, our home got a pretty good overhaul after I read it.  You can see how I cleaned up our books and linen closet for example, or visit my Organizing tab at the top of my blog for more ways we keep our home organized.
In the book, one thing that struck me was how she organized and stored t-shirts, on end standing up, so you can see everything, as opposed to laying them flat on top of each other where you have to dig through to find the one you want.  The digging and pulling always leaves a mess, so I arrange shirts standing up now too.  It’s so much better!  I actually don’t have many t-shirts, so I hang mine, but I arrange my husband and son’s this way.
You might have caught me lamenting on Instagram how laundry is not my favorite.  Well, I actually do love to do Jordan’s adorable baby girl clothes (and I loved doing James too when his clothes were all tiny and cute), but now, it just feels never ending!  It’s the folding and putting away drives me crazy!  So I just wear the same sweater/jeans over and over until I see stains or they smell! 😉
I found the Kon Mari T-Shirt folding method a little complicated, so I modified it and it works just fine!  My ‘method’ of folding is easier seen than explained, so I made a graphic for you!  But if you need clarification:

1) Fold the shirt in half lengthwise
2) Fold the arms behind the shirt
3) Fold in half lengthwise
4) Fold in half lengthwise again

Easy!

Now he can see everything and not have to go digging for one of the bazillion t-shirts he’s looking for!
Not that t-shirts are all the guy has in his closet!  In collaboration with Nordstrom (my first stop when I’m shopping for hubby), I can share with you the tried and true picks from there for men.  As much as I like to shop for myself and the kids;) it’s nice to add something for him to my cart and I know he appreciates it too.  Below are some of my husband’s favorite things from Nordstrom and a couple new things to try!
Classic Work Shirt  – These traditional work shirts are great for the office and my husband can never have too many of them because he wears them almost everyday. You can wash and dry them at home (on low), which is so much better than the time and expense of going to the dry cleaners.  They also don’t wrinkle easily, which is a bonus and they are a great value and fit.  I’m partial to the light blue and pink, but it comes in 6 colors.
Stripe Tie – If your guy wears a tie to work, this silk and cotton stripe tie is a winner.  I also like this stripe tie with thinner stripes.  Men that have to wear suits to work don’t get to be all that creative with their wardrobe, so nice ties (and fun socks) are a great way to add personality and style.  I always take note when I see a man dressed in a suit and catch a glimpse of his colorful socks. Way to go, dude!
Medallion Tie – This classic 100% silk tie is a great way to add color and pattern in a subtle way.  My husband has this in nearly every color (comes in 5) and currently 50% off!
Under Armour ColdGear Henley Shirt – I’ve mentioned before that my hubby swears by Under Armour clothing and you can see by his shirt drawer that’s true! He loves this relaxed, comfortable fit long sleeve tee that keeps your warm.  It has a slim athletic cut that doesn’t add extra bulk. I love the baseball style sleeves!
Under Armour Loose Fit Tee – These are the shirts that my husband wears all the time on weekends (because they wick away sweat to keep you cool and he always says he gets hot and sweaty) and also to run or workout in.  He also likes that they are a looser fit and not a “skinny model” fit like he complains some shirts are cut.

*An honorable mention goes to this tee that my husband often wears under his suit to keep him cool and dry in the summer.  It’s brutal walking to the courthouse in a suit and tie in the hot and humid Houston summer!

Nike Free Run Flyknit – I need to get these for my husband, I have the women’s version (purple) and LOVE them!  They are by far my favorite running shoe and I’m a die hard ASICS fan!  I still wear my ASICS when I run the dusty park trail (because I don’t want to get my Nikes so dirty), but the ASICS are bulkier.  The Nike Free Flyknit are just so lightweight and cushiony and feel so good on your foot without it getting all sweaty while you run.  I’m not a long distance runner, but typically run 30 minutes a few times a week and mine have lasted since last June
UGG Slippers – I’ll admit my husband is the exception to this one (he doesn’t wear slippers), but my friends tell me their husbands love these cozy UGG slippers, espeically on weekends when it’s cold out.  I guess other people agree because they have 555 positive reviews- Nordstrom’s site is so helpful for that!  These slippers are leather and genuine shearling or 100% UGGpure wool and the sole is rubber.  They don’t come in half sizes, so based on the reviews, I’d recommend sizing up if your guy is between sizes.
Fit Bit – This Fitness Watch is another thing my friends love and I figured your guy might like it too if he’s into fitness.  If you want to support his new year’s resolution to lose those extra pounds, he might appreciate this gift!  It syncs to your smart phone and tracks all your progress, like calories burned, steps taken, measures sleep, and offers workouts.  It’s also a heart rate monitor, which I love, it helps me when I’m running to do intervals.
Herschel Supply Duffel Bag – If my husband didn’t already have nearly as many bags as I do, I’d get him this high quality one!  It’s lightweight (2 pounds) and nice and roomy (20 1/2W x 13H x 11D) with outside zip shoe compartment.  I like the classic design (it also comes in black) and is the perfect bag for weekend getaways or quick trips.

Have a great day friends!  I hope the t-shirt folding and putting away demo helps!

  1. Do you fold your son's shirts the same way? I am a nanny for an almost 7 year old and I would love to be able to store his shirts this way so he can see them better. But I am not sure if they are big enough to stand like this? I will try!

    1. Yes, but he doesn't have nearly as many because he wears a uniform to school and we hang those. I fold his shorts in half and arrange them so we can see them too.

  2. Genius! Between my hubby and my son the t-shirt problems in our house are out of control! Totally trying this folding method in the drawer! 🙂
