Diaper Bag Backpack

As much as I’d like to keep hibernating at home with our less than 2-week-old baby girl, I also don’t want to miss some of our 6-year old’s special events.  Life must go on now that we’re a party of 4! Last weekend was James’ last basketball game and the end-of-the-season basketball party.  Dad coaches the team and did such a great job with those little kindergarteners, so I wanted to attend both as a family, and so that James would know that it’s not all about the baby.  I’ve already skipped out on practices and he’s let me know that he misses me.  We are still working out our new normal and will just keep feeling it out as we go.
So, for the events last weekend, I figured I could wear Jordan in a wrap on my chest and she’d likely sleep through both events (they both lasted right about 1 hour).  My sis-n-law always swore by using a backpack as a diaper bag and I gave it a go too after seeing so many cute styles at Nordstrom.  Who knew there were so many designer backpacks out there- I never paid attention before.  Not that you need a designer diaper bag, but this one is on sale so I couldn’t resist!

I ordered this Kate Spade backpack online and figured if it didn’t work out, I could easily return it since Nordstrom has free shipping and free returns.  I never carried a traditional diaper bag with our son, just opted for a tote, but I really like this stylish backpack option because it has two zipper compartments on the outside and several mesh pockets inside to help keep me organized.

Isn’t the color and pattern fun?  My son said it looked like Spring break!

Kate Spade backpack (on sale now- 40% off!) | NARS lipgloss (Tasmania) | MAC lipsgloss (Sweet Tooth)

On the outside, I put my lipstick and lipgloss, cell phone, and a pack of gum.  On the inside is room for diapers, wipes, a burp cloth, swaddle blanket, bottle, my sunglasses and wallet.  I could also fit a change of clothes, but I didn’t bring any this time.

It was nice to be able to be hands free while at both events, although I still kept my hands on her most of the time.

Go Team!!
This particular backpack comes in two sizes, and I’m using the larger one, which is 10 inches wide by 13 inches high.  The smaller one is 8×9 inches. It was chilly earlier in the day, but you get pretty warm wearing a baby on your chest, and the weather had warmed up by the afternoon, so I changed into shorts and a tank.  I’m still wearing maternity pants/shorts, but since I have some I like, I don’t mind.

These ladies have been such great friends and they loved getting a little peek of baby Jordan (as I suspected, she slept the whole time).  That sweet friend in the yellow hat organized our meal delivery and for that, I will be forever grateful.  Bringing food to a hungry family with a newborn is one of the best gifts you can give!
I found more cool backpack options, great for when you prefer to be hands free or if you have lots of stuff to carry and want to be organized.  Would you opt for a backpack?  I’m thinking they would also be great for Spring break and in the summer on vacations when you’re doing lots of walking.

  1. I 100% will go with a backpack with baby number 3. It just seemed like the most sensible option. Nothing frustrates me more than trying to run out the door with 2 toddlers in tow and my tote/purse flopping around all over the place.

  2. I sometimes use the Fjallraven Kanken. Love it! If it's an extra long outing the Skip Hop diaper bag I have is great, but that Fjallraven backpack is awesome for most of my outings with my little man.

  3. Ive always used backpacks as diaper bags for obvious reasons , they keep you balanced as you walk. My favorite brand is Wildkin and I just get them embroided at a local shop in Pearland.

  4. Oh, how CUTE are you wearing your sweet little girly?! Love seeing this peek at life with baby Jordan. I wore my kids often as newborns, too, and always loved having them close. Some of my favorite photos of us are those that document me wearing them in a Moby….especially because it reminds me just how teeny they once were!

  5. Ahh, seeing these pictures of you wearing your sweet newborn makes me want another! As far as diaper bags, I invested in a Petunia Pickle Bottom Boxy Backpack when my first daughter was 18 months old. She's 3 now and I'm still using it! So versatile, so stylish, and stays organized so well!

  6. What a great idea! I never thought of that. Flying solo with our 3-month old soon; that would be great for travel! Congratulations on your precious babies!!
