Snowflake Christmas Decor

Decorating our home for the holidays is something I really enjoy, but it also often unfolds rather slowly.  This year, we’ve gotten the Christmas tree up and lighted garland on the stairs, along with some decorative touches in the kitchen.  James has a little tree in his room too.  Last week, we got our dining room holiday ready with reindeers, glittery snowflakes, and faux snow.  Did you get a sneak peek on my Instagram?  I always want to show things as soon as they are created (or while in progress), but then it took me until Sunday night to finish the post.  It’s a wonder I can hold on to any Christmas gifts until Christmas- I want to give the gifts as soon as I buy them!

The inspiration for a ‘snowing’ dining room came from Wal-Mart where I found large, gold glittery snowflakes for $2.97 each.  To hang them from the ceiling, I secured them with thread and thumbtacks.  I looked for fishing line, but couldn’t find any so I went with thread I already had at home and you can’t really see it once it’s hanging.  The other smaller snowflakes are from Target.
You can see the thumbtacks in the ceiling if you look carefully.  I hung them at various heights and about 8 – 16 inches from the back wall.  Some of them turn while hanging, which actually looks cool.
On the console table, I displayed three of my favorite reindeer (the glittery ones from Target and the branched one is from Pier One).  It seems like I’ve bought a new reindeer for the past few years, and the silver one is the newbie this year.  To balance the table, I added two tall mercury glass candleholders (Homegoods) at each end and a tree in the center.  The small perforated candle holders are from Target.
I keep recycling my faux snow from Pottery Barn which is the best after-Christmas deal I’ve gotten severals year ago.  Each year, more and more of it ends up in the vacuum cleaner, but I think I’ve got at least several more years’ worth.
This console table is from World Market and I finally added drawer pulls that I found online at Signature Hardware where I got our cast iron dinner bell.
One of the things I like about the table is that it has a lower shelf for decorating too.  It’s great for showing off tall things,  so I stacked some decorative holiday boxes from Homegoods and a large urn from Pottery Barn.
To fill up the urn, I stuffed it with crumbled up paper, then added just a few pinecones on top so they peek through.
Our two Birch Lane chairs are a new addition this year, so now we’ll be able to seat 12 people (albeit tightly) around our dining room table.  Perfect because we’re hosting 12 for Christmas dinner this year.
I love the impact of hanging these snowflakes from the ceiling.  My son helped by handing me each snowflake while I was on the ladder so I can say we decorated this room (and got very glittery) together.
I hope your holidays are off to a good start.  I know they can be stressful too.  We’re finding joy in small things lately.  We got to go see Santa in our neighborhood this year so we didn’t have to fight the mall crowds.  I know I’m biased, but my son took the cutest picture ever with Santa.  The twin hats (he stole his from our Christmas tree), the full hug, the happiness in his eyes.
He truly embodies the joy of the season and makes me feel it too.  We’re hearing Go Tell It On The Mountain nonstop and not at all quietly.  It’s one of the songs their class is preparing for the Christmas concert this week and when he showed me the ‘gestures’ that go with the song, I about died.  #proudmama

  1. Oh my goodness- I love those glittery snowflakes! Isn't it funny what you can find at Wal-Mart sometimes? Target is my usual spot, but I'll venture into WM every once in a while and often leave with at least one good (and surprising) find! I also love your collection of deer. I just found a great one at Tuesday Morning and am working on finishing the Christmas decor in my home.
