Painting and Priorities

Painting and Priorities

Hi friends, no Wardrobe Wednesday here as I just want to savor the last drops of summer before school starts (too early!) for us in just two weeks.  I can’t stop time, but I can enjoy the lazy days we’ve been fortunate to have recently and for the next couple weeks.  I want so bad to be present in the moment with my child and it’s difficult to do that for every moment of the day, but sometimes, those moments happen and you don’t even have to try.

The morning when James declared, “I want to paint!”, I admit my first thought was about how messy it would be and how I’d have to pull out all the supplies and the kitchen counters would have paint everywhere,

Easy DIY // Dipped Lamp & Vase

Easy DIY // Dipped Lamp & Vase

An easy DIY project is my kind of project!  I can handle a can of spray paint! I’m working on creating a desk nook in my son’s room and needed a desk lamp, so, instead of purchasing a new one, I repurposed one I’m not currently using by giving it a fun “dipped” navy blue edge.  My lamp is from Z Gallerie, but I don’t see it on their website anymore.

I only wanted to paint the rim of the base and lamp head, so I taped and covered everything else (including where the light bulb goes).  A couple coats of spray paint is all it took and the paint dries quickly.

Weekend Recap // Lost Pines

Weekend Recap // Lost Pines

Some of you who’ve read my blog since the very beginning have seen my son grow up from just a little baby old into an energetic 4 year-old boy.  He’s got the sweetest spirit and everyone who meets him always comments what a joy he is.  He’s one of those kids who will sit and chat with you as long as you’re willing to talk.  I like sharing bits of my life with him here and I got some cute pictures this weekend while we were away on a quick getaway at Lost Pines in Bastrop, Texas.  I always debate if I should bring my good camera (Nikon D90) or just use my iPhone,

Weekend Steals & Deals

Weekend Steals & Deals

This weekend we’re looking forward to some much-needed family R&R.  Then, on Sunday, we’ll be getting together with friends at a back-to-school picnic (ours starts mid-Aug) where kids can play and the adults can see each other again.  I miss the moms I had gotten used to seeing everyday at the school drop-off and during sports seasons.  Hope you have some good weekend plans too! Of course the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is still going on and you can see some of my top pics HERE.  Although Nordstrom is offering the best deals on Fall apparel, now is also the time to save big on clearance items.

New Dining Room Paint- Sherwin Williams Comfort Grey

New Dining Room Paint- Sherwin Williams Comfort Grey

Thank you so very much for weighing in on my paint-color dilemma in the dining room!  I read all the comments and really appreciate the feedback.  It reminds me why I started blogging in the first place- to have other women who love home decor to bounce ideas off of.  My husband is not only color-blind, but pretty nonchalant when it comes to the decor choices in our house (unless he hates something), so I like that I have Y’ALL to share these things with! :)After putting eight samples on the wall, the color I chose was Comfort Grey by Sherwin Williams in semi-gloss,

Wardrobe Wednesday // New Arrivals at Stella & Dot

Wardrobe Wednesday // New Arrivals at Stella & Dot

I just looked at Stella & Dot’s new arrivals and I’m smitten with several of their new pieces- it’s such a good collection!

Stella & Dot Union Square Scarf- Geo Ikat

Stella & Dot has the best scarves, I swear.  And I’m crazy about the color and pattern in this new Geo Ikat scarf. I always feel like pink looks good near the face. These scarves are perfect because they are large (38″x70″), so you can wear them in a ton of different ways, but they are still lightweight so you don’t feel weighed down.  I already get a lot of use from my S&D Leopard Print (no longer available) and Union Scarf Frida Print scarves,

Favorite Salad Bowls and Food Travel Bag

Favorite Salad Bowls and Food Travel Bag

One thing that makes healthy eating more pleasurable is the way the meal is plated and served.  Although I am guilty of eating a meal in my car when I have to, I much prefer to sit down to a pretty table (a simple placemat and fresh bunch of flowers) with some care taken in how the food is presented.  My girlfriend, Karen, turned me on to the best salad bowls ever and I’m hooked on them!  They are the Blanc Porcelain Bowls from  Sur La Table and they are so perfect because they are wide (9 inches) and shallow.

Choosing Paint for the Dining Room – Sherwin Williams …

Choosing Paint for the Dining Room – Sherwin Williams Sea Salt ??

How many samples of paint does it take to find the right color for a dining room?  Apparently, at least eight.  I’ve been to the paint store three times in the past three days to continue testing paint samples, and I’m not even sure I have a winner yet!  I’m determined to decide today though because Sherwin Williams is having their 40% off sale and I want to take advantage of it! (It ends Monday).

I fell in love with Sherwin Williams Sea Salt after seeing it on Life on Virginia Street, in Sarah’s master bedroom.

Mustard Lemon Chicken with Thyme

Mustard Lemon Chicken with Thyme

If you’ve been following along this blog for long, y’all know how much chicken we eat around here. Last week, I shared how we typically grill up a bunch of chicken and then add it to our salads throughout the week.  I’m keeping chicken on my menu, but I wanted to find more interesting ways to prepare it.  I’m sure you know how boring chicken breasts can be if they’re not salted, flavored with herbs and spices, or added to a salad with dressing.  Today, I’m sharing a recipe for Mustard Lemon Chicken with Fresh Thyme as a healthy alternative to salting the heck out of your chicken.

Weekend Steals & Deals // Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

If you’re looking to do some shopping this weekend, the Nordstrom Anniversary sale is open to the public from now until August 3 and features their best deals on all their Fall clothing, shoes, handbags, accessories, and more.  I typically order online from Nordstrom because their site is so easy to shop and shipping and returns are free, but I went to the store yesterday because I wanted to try on their fall boots!  Having not been inside the store in awhile, I almost forgot how helpful and professional their salespeople are.  I remember that’s one of the things I like best about shopping there.

Thai Steak Salad with Peanut Sauce

Thai Steak Salad with Peanut Sauce

I’m so happy to share a recipe featuring steak!!!  And this is a really good cut of meat, specifically, beef tenderloin.  I haven’t had one of those in ages and I didn’t want to mess up the cooking, so my husband cooked that part of this Thai Steak Salad for me.  He got it just right too!

Because this meal is a salad, all you have to do is prepare the marinade, and then be patient while the meat marinates at least four hours, or up to overnight.  It’s easy to throw the cold salad ingredients together,

Healthy Meal Prep

Healthy Meal Prep

It goes without saying that if you want to get in shape, you have to eat healthy.  But, it’s hard when there’s so much going on in our lives and we feel like we don’t have the TIME to prepare healthy meals.  For me, I eat five meals a day about 3 hours apart.  I have gotten used to eating the same thing twice a day (usually a grilled chicken salad).  I enjoy my salad, so it’s no big deal.  And thank the Lord, my husband eats the same way, so I don’t have to prepare another meal for him.  But,

Wardrobe Wednesday – Stitch Fix Review

Wardrobe Wednesday – Stitch Fix Review

I’m so excited to share a fun and new (to me) clothing find Stitch Fix!  One of my favorite mom’s at my son’s school told me about it a few months ago.  I signed up, but wanted to see how it went before sharing it here with y’all in case I didn’t like it.  I’ve been a member for awhile now and I’m pretty hooked on it!

With Stitch Fix, you fill out a personal style profile, including info about your size (height, weight, bra size, how you like things to fit, etc.), and then they send you five pieces of clothing to try on in the privacy of your own home as often as you want (I get mine once a month,

Haven Recap (Part 2) Class Cliff Notes

Haven Recap (Part 2) Class Cliff Notes

As promised, Part 2 of my Haven blog conference recap focuses on the Cliff notes I took during the classes I attended.  You can read Part 1 here.  Before I dive into the class notes though, I wanted to share my own insights about developing relationships inside the blogging community, especially when you’re at a blog conference.  If you’re not a blogger, the advice below could also apply to networking in your career.

RELATIONSHIPS

When you attend a blog conference, like Haven, you obviously want to make as many connections as possible because that’s where most of your opportunity for growth as a blogger comes from.

What’s Next? The Post Bikini Competition Plan

A surprising thing about post-competition is that I’m not all that anxious to eat all of the food that’s been off limits during contest prep.  You’d think I’d want to eat everything in sight, but that hasn’t been the case.  In fact, the thought of a big, juicy cheeseburger and fries (something I love to indulge in once in a while before) doesn’t really sound good to me right now.  I think it feels so good having worked so hard to get in shape, I don’t want to “blow it” by eating bad.  It doesn’t feel worth it.

Haven Recap (Part 1- Blog Friends)

Haven Recap (Part 1- Blog Friends)

Although I’m a blogger, I’m also a blog reader and follower of (many) other blogs.  I continue to get lost in blogs for hours late at night and am giddy when I find a blog that is full of creative talent, exciting ideas, and cool projects.  I fall hard for beautiful photography (especially food photos), the way a post is written, and the little thrill of getting to peek into someone’s home.

Last weekend, I went to the Haven blog conference in Atlanta, where home and DIY bloggers can connect face-to-face, instead of just visiting with each other online.

Nordstrom Anniversary (Early Access) Sale

Nordstrom Anniversary (Early Access) Sale

A couple days ago, I had to take my iPhone in to be repaired and while I was waiting for the fix, I popped in a few of my favorite stores at the Houston Galleria.  I haven’t been to the mall in awhile, opting to shop online more for convenience, but it was cool to see the Fall merchandise starting to be displayed.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m still just beginning to enjoy our summer, but I still like seeing the new styles.

A favorite place to shop is Nordstrom, and their Anniversary sale starts July 18,

Heading to Haven . . .

Heading to Haven . . .

Tomorrow morning I get to head to Atlanta for the Haven blog conference where I’m anxiously awaiting meeting up with my girlfriends!  In the past 4 years, I’ve had the good fortune to meet many other bloggers, but this time, I’ll get to meet a lot of women I’ve admired for years, but never met in person!  I’ll be posting some pics on Instagram if you want to follow along this weekend. 🙂

After blogging for a relatively long time, I know there is still so much to learn.  I’m in a great place to absorb information from other talented creatives (just take a look at the speakers this year!) and just relax and enjoy my time with my friends.
