Organized “Boutique” Closet

Happy Monday! Hope you all got enough sleep last night, it’s hard to lose that hour. 🙁  I’ve gotten my closet all organized and pretty to show you, but I wish you could just come over and see it! Photographing is so tricky because of the light situation.  There are three windows, which provide nice natural light, but I realized that it also gets hot or the sunshine glares into the mirror, so I keep two of the three windows covered with retail boxes. Lends to the boutique feel I was going for. 😉 I have whittled down my wardrobe and jewelry to items I will actually wear, so it’s nice now to be able to “shop” my closet instead of feeling like I have nothing to wear.

Some of you may have seen photos of my closet before, but in case you’re new to my blog, I’ll start from scratch.  The room is 9’4″ x 13″2 with a center island that has six square cubbies on each side.  There is a built-in dresser with overhead shelving, shoe shelves (with room for tall boots on top), and behind the door, more cubed shelves.  There are 12 hanging compartments, but I don’t have enough clothes to fill all of them, so I’m showcasing my jewelry in those “empty” spaces.

The shoe storage is a favorite element.  I like to see what I have and be able to access it easily.  I keep a small stool in the closet for when I need to reach high and it provides a good seat when putting on my shoes. (Athletic shoes and flip flops are downstairs in the mudroom).
I recently switched out all my white plastic hangers for these slim, huggable hangers, which I love! They save so much space and really keep your clothes from falling off the hanger.  Also, these hangers have rounded ends to prevent those ugly points on your shirts. I had to get used to using them because when you put them in your shirt, they can get caught on the fabric.
My tops are organized into four hanging sections: 1) tanks/sleeveless; 2) cotton tees (long and short); 3) blouses/button down shirts; and 4) sweaters.  I then organize them by color.
I realize I have a tendency to buy plain tan, grey and black shirts a lot, so I’m making an effort to wear my colorful clothing more often.

Jeans and leggings are folded and hung on children’s huggable hangers.
Since this back wall is the first thing I see when I enter my closet, I hung my colorful necklaces there using a silver pushpin pushed right into the wall. I tried to keep them level but didn’t measure, just “eyeballed” it. The statement necklaces are hung across two pushpins and the others hang on one.
The adjacent wall is where I hang my trousers, skirts, dresses, blouses, jackets/cardigans, and sweaters.
I prefer to hang my sweaters during winter so they aren’t getting smashed and wrinkled, but I anticipate our weather is warming and I doubt these folded sweaters will be getting much use again until next fall.
I’m crazy for how I use this tie/belt organizer to hang my scarves.  It keeps them tangle and wrinkle free and easy to see.  It’s very strong- holds 14 scarves on one hanger!
On the back of my closet door hangs my robes and a swimsuit (wishful thinking!).  There are seven cubbies to the right for extra storage.
My bangle bracelets, gold necklaces and earrings are on the shelf closest to the door since these are the items I wear most often.
I used bookplates and labels for these canvas bins for easy reference.
Bikinis go in their own bin with dividers.
On the right side of the island are my tank tops, shorts, and capri pants.  The tanks are divided into “small” and “medium” but I may also create a section just for white tanks since I wear them so often.
Belts are on the opposite side in bins with compartments.
The dresser holds my travel bags, purses, watches/rings, makeup (top drawer), undies/socks/bras (second drawer), workout clothes (third drawer), and pjs (bottom drawer).
For fun, I added decorative paper to the sides of the drawers.
One of my favorite little things was adding these oversized pushpins to the side of the dresser for putting together an outfit.

  1. I am so jealous! I love how everything is organized so well and you can see it all! I'm assuming you built your house yourself, cause it's rare to find a closet this amazing!

    1. Thanks Meghan! I should have mentioned that in the post. 🙂 We did build and I had the opportunity to design this closet, hence all the organizational storage spaces!

  2. (long time lurker, first time poster 🙂 )

Fantastic closet! I'm undertaking a project similar to this, though my closet is not wide enough for an island. I am assuming all the shelves are adjustable, but I would love it if you could tell me what the measurements are on your shoe shelves – just length and how far apart they are spaced please? I'm trying to figure out how many I need but that sort of depends on how far apart I have to space them.

This is so inspiring and pretty!

  3. Oh my heavens I just died a little…from jealousy/happiness hahaha FABULOUS! Honey and I just bought our forever home and luckily there is a bedroom that we are turning into the master closet (bc it's awkward to access master bath without going through the room so we are just converting entire room to closet!) so with the space I am so excited to do this! Question- we are having the HARDEST time finding a closet island? Do you know where we should look? Preferably one with drawers on both sides?

    1. Hi Jessi! Since we built this house, the island and closet were part of the build and not separate pieces of furniture. That said, my island is really a simple construction project if you know someone who is handy. 🙂

  4. Ha, Kate is home with me and took one look at your shoe collection and jewelry and was like "Dang!" My girls love shoes and jewelry (they daddy not so much, LOL). It looks amazing Megan. I would have to say that is the one area I really went minimal however. I found myself wearing only about 1/3 of what was in mine.

  5. I love your closet, Megan! There are so many good ideas. Like you, I like to organize my clothes by color. I love your jewelry display, particularly your statement necklaces. Where do you store your luggage? That is one of my most difficult storage issues.

  6. It's just dreamy, Megan. I might spend my whole day in there. You have done a gorgeous. job. I love the bookplate labels on the island. Takes it to a new level.

  7. Geez. I don't eve know what to say….gorgeous and love how you displayed all of your jewelry. I think your closet is as big as our bedroom. haha Great photos Megan. I started my Spring cleaning this past weekend and it looks so sad. BUT, I am making room for new things and am excited to start my shopping again. Hope you had a great week! Saw your fitness post on your other blog – AWESOME work my lady! You are doing fabulous!!!

  8. I would love to shop your closet! It is like a sweet little boutique, you have done such an amazing job organizing it and making it into the dreamiest of spaces! xoxo!

  9. It looks amazing! Working on my closet this year. It's organized and clean, but I'd like to display my shoes and jewelry better. This post has great ideas for that!

  10. Your closet is so beautiful Megan. Really stunning. What a wonderful place to get ready each morning. Come do mine!!

  11. You did an AMAZING job organizing everything Megan! It's perfect! I love the idea of the robes/swimsuits on the hanger over the door. So smart! You've made me so excited to finish organizing mine! Although I think I only have 1/4 of the clothes you do! I have two long shoe shelves and only have them half way filled up. I told my husband when we moved in "I know just how to fix that problem!" 🙂 Good problem to have. It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing it all!

  12. OMG! I am 'closet jealous' too! I had in past house, which was huge, a closet doublé the size of yours, as hubby used the other half… and it was perfect too! Now my walk in is quite small and packed, I too have lots of cloths and I do shop my closet all the time, I would much more if I had a fab closet as yours is! I love the way you fixed up! SWOONnnn!!!!

  13. Your organizational skills are impressive, Megan. I can only imagine the amount of time that went into this project. I am personally a "less is more" type of girl, and don't feel the need to surround myself with excessive stuff. It helps maintain the focus on what is truly important to me.

  14. I totally get it! We just moved and I spent more time planning, prepping, and painting my "new" closet than I did my office. You'll probably also find me there more often! LOL. If I had a closet your size I'd squeeze in a bed and lock the door some days! Thanks for the tour.

  15. I have the same 3-tier bracelet display and I was wondering if you glued them onto the posts. I haven't done that yet and every time I remove a bracelet I'm dealing with a seesaw and some bracelets will slide off of the heavy end. If you did glue or adhere them, I'd love to know how you did that. Thanks! This closet is definitely a dream closet – I absolutely love it.

  16. I have the same bracelet display and I was wondering if you glued the display to the posts? I haven't done that yet and every time I remove a bracelet, I have to make sure the others don't slide off the other end. It's like a seesaw. Love the closet, btw.

    1. Hi Ann! I haven't had any trouble with mine. I actually just bought a second one because it's been really useful for me. So weird you're having that problem. sounds like yours is defective. Can you exchange it?

  17. Hi Megan. Thinking about getting the slim hangers. It recently learned about petite sized hangers. But they are expensive! I mostly want hangers that won't leave the shoulder marks. You have no issues with these hangers that you use? Thanks!

    1. Hi Amy! I've never heard of petite sized hangers, I'm curious about them. But no, I haven't had any issues with the regular slim hangers I use, I love them for space saving!
