Faith

This blog began as a spin-off from my home decor/organization blog, Honey We’re Home.  I wanted a place to write about health and fitness, and share with people how a busy, working mom attempts to live a healthy lifestyle.  But, there are more aspects than just clean eating and exercise that are critical to living really well.  It’s a combination of relationships (with girlfriends, kids, parents, coworkers, and significant others), career, financial freedom, creativity, play, hobbies, and finding joy, being authentic.  We are physical, emotional, sexual, and spiritual creatures.  For me, a major component of life includes my faith in God and my relationship with Him.  I went to church very infrequently as a kid, (we went typically at Easter and/or Christmas) but my parents always instilled in me the knowledge that there is a big God who knows me intimately and loves me very much.
It’s pretty difficult to manage to have all areas of your life gelling at once.  Your career and kids are doing good, but your marriage sucks.  Or your relationships are blossoming, but you are in debt.    Maybe career (be it at home or outside) are humming along but you have no energy and are out of shape.  Regardless of the hardships we endure, if our FAITH is strong, it seems to help hold us together.  Lets us know that, “this too, shall pass.”
Jeremiah 29:11-12
In law school, I became actively involved in my church and choir and developed a deeper relationship with God.  After half a decade in the choir, and being newly married, I stepped down to devote my time to my new marriage.  The choir was a big time commitment and I felt that I should spend more time at home.  But I missed it terribly.  I recently came home to the choir.  When I returned to choir practice for the first time and we began worshipping, the very tangible presence of God filled the room and it was so beautiful I could cry.  I felt it immediately and am so THANKFUL.  I’m thankful that our rehearsal is a church service in and of itself. I’m thankful for the family of friends I’ve made, many of whom are still there and welcomed me back (after 5 years!) with warm, open arms.
I still have to practice daily prayer- talking to God- and be mindful of His Word and His promises.  It’s not necessarily second nature even after all of those years of being closely connected.  But I’m reminded that He is always there for us, always ready to receive our hearts, and will forgive our sins when we go to Him with a heartfelt confession.  I’m so humbled by that.
I get a lot of joy from encouraging you in the health and fitness arena, and I want to encourage you in your FAITH too.  I’ll be sharing some inspiration from time to time on Sundays if you want to pop in, you are always welcome.
I received a Bible from my law school boyfriend and it’s been one of the best gifts I’ve ever been given. It’s gotten tattered and worn over the years, and I’ve been given new Bibles since, but I always return to this one.
and then I looked up Hebrews 4:12 — I LOVE that it says God knows the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  Doesn’t that give such a sense of peace? He knows my heart.  He knows YOUR heart.
I would love it if you felt compelled to leave a scripture in the comments.  Someone needs to hear it.

  1. I'm a new Christian, sort of. I've always believed but never practiced. Honestly, I feel slightly overwhelmed with it all but I know I'm making progress with Him. Trying to understand the Bible is big for me but right now, it's just not there. I haven't reached the level where I can find the meaning in every scripture or how to apply to my every day life but I know that one day it will come. I have faith that God will point me in the direction of those that can help me, teach me and show me exactly what he wants.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post!

    1. When I first started reading the Bible and wanting it to make sense for me, I did a lot of Bible studies and Beth Moore is one of my favorite teachers. She has online classes or you can buy/download a workbook and do one on your own at your own pace. She is great for sharing how particular verses apply to our lives. She has Living Proof Ministry that you can google for a start. Hope this helps!

  2. Here is a great one we should always remember when it comes to worrying: (Philippians 4:6-7) In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Love this post Megan and look forward to more posts on faith. Have a great Sunday and happy first day of fall!!

  3. Amanda – I was going to post my favorite verse, but you did it for me. Thank you! I love that if we turn our requests over to God he will give us peace. And the peace that I receive is much more important than anything else I think I want.

  4. Wow! I'm so glad you're starting to write about faith. Not long after the verses Amanda mentioned, Paul closes his letter to the Philippians with "And my God shall supply all your needs." I gotta say, we are in place where we are claiming this promise every.single.day with faith. Faith to know that God will do what He said he's gonna do, even if I can't see how! Thanks for writing.

    1. Thank you Renee, I'm glad you appreciate it! I started to write a little about faith about a year ago on my home blog, but it never felt quite right. I think here is a better place to share since this blog feels a little more intimate to me, more personal. "God shall supply ALL my needs." I definitely need to remember that too. Especially when I don't see it. We can claim it together.

  5. Love, love, love this post Megan!! There are many verses I could share, but two things have stuck with me the past couple of weeks. One came from the commentary for our study of Romans (I belong to Community Bible Study, there are chapters all over and they are a fantastic way to work through the Bible alongside fellow Christians).

""God's plan of salvation is surprising because it is so underserved. God INDEED meets us WHERE WE ARE, but He has NO plans for LEAVING US WHERE WE ARE." (He wants to make us into that which we cannot become on our own-into the very image of His Son, Jesus Christ. Romans 8:29-30)

And something I saw on a church marque: "You trust God with your forever, why not trust Him with today?"

I too love Beth's studies. I also love the book The Life God Rewards by Bruce Wilkinson (he is also the author of the Prayer of Jabez and Secrets of the Vine). And, a little known book written by the daughter in law of one of our church members Ruthie Delk called Craving Grace Like Chocolate-How the Gospel Changes Everything.

I look forward to reading more of your Faith posts!!

  6. Loved hearing your heart in this post Megan! Oh man, if I didn't have a faith and trust in Christ life would be so different. I've leaned on my faith, peace and trust in the Lord in so many areas when life didn't make sense HE did.

Though my heart and strength may fail, God is my portion forever. Psalms 73:26 this is my fave verse because it reminds me that I'm going to fail a lot but as long as I bring those do God it's ok because he's going to do something with those failures if I let him.

    1. Great question Matthew. I don't try to convince anyone. I'm always open to talk with anyone who wants to engage though. Are you going through a specific situation with someone?

  7. You are so right, our lives are never completely 'jelling' but one thing that is ALWAYS constant is the love our Lord has for us. I work each day to continue my relationship with Him, and I am so thankful that when I don't make time or get to busy, He is still there, waiting for me. He is forever faithful.

Two verses that are my absolute favorite:

Psalm 37: 4-7 –> Take delight in the Lord & He will give you your hearts desire. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you. Be still in the presence of the Lord & wait patiently for Him to act. Don't worry.

Philippians 4:6 –> Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God (If you're going to worry about it, pray about it. If you're going to pray about it, don't worry about it)

  8. Colossians 3:2 "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."

I love this verse for always reminding me that materialistic items are not what I should be focusing on. This is one of the versus that prompted me take on my new years resolution of NO shopping for a year. No clothes, shoes, or accessories for a whole year. My relationship with God has grown because of it and I now am more aware of how much emphasis I put into things of no Godly value.

Here is my post about my NY resolution!

Love this post! Have a great evening 🙂

    1. Sarah, that is amazing. I have never tried to do that and honestly don't know if I could. I can imagine how much of my energy goes into things like shopping and with that "free" time, I could be connecting more with God, zeroing in more on what HIS plan for me is, connecting with people He wants me to be involved with, etc. I will be reading your post. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Your worn out Bible reminds me of a quote I've known for years. I don't know who said it.

"A Bible badly worn and falling apart, is probably owned by someone who isn't."

  10. this post made me smile! my walk with the Lord is the most important thing in my life and it is the center to all the spokes on the wheel. If I am walking closely with God, I am the better version of me. I think this is because it's no longer about me and more about Him in me. The verse that is speaking to me so much right now is Micah 6:8
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly[a] with your God.

As far as great Bible training, I also love Beth Moore as well as Priscilla Shirer. Both ladies have such great daily application in their teaching. Without a doubt one of the best books and practices I have begun is related to Ann Voskamp's 1000 Gifts. The book rocked my world. The devotional and resultant listing of 1000 gifts this year has been revolutionary. I am overwhelmed by the goodness of God. I highly recommend the book. It makes an incredible gift as well.

  11. I am going through a very difficult time and just started memorizing scripture, this is my first one (typed from memory!):

The Lord God is my strength, my personal bravery and my invincible army. He makes my feet like hinds feet and will make me to walk, not stand still in terror, but walk and make spiritual progress on my high places of suffering, trouble or responsibility. Hababbuk 3:19 (Amplified version)

I am so glad to see your faith posts and will be looking forward to them. Tell me, when and how do you find the time, energy and place to really read the Bible.

    1. When I first started reading the Bible, I was determined to read the whole thing. So, I found a "read the Bible in one year" guide online and stuck pretty close to it. I would usually read at night, in bed, before going to sleep. Sometimes I got behind, but I did complete it. Some days, I'd just tell myself to read one little bit, not the whole days assignment, and then I'd find I kept reading. I skipped some days too though. I also like to read early in the morning when the house is quiet, even if for just 10 minutes. I have lots of highlighting and underlighting and notes in the margin now from church services and Bible study. Just don't get overwhelmed, go at your own pace, and find a time that works for you. There is no wrong way. Or right way.

    2. And I'm so proud of you for typing from MEMORY! Doesn't that feel so good!! I've heard of people writing a scripture on a small note card and memorizing one card a week. Whatever works for you! "The Lord God is my strength." Also, being in choir, whenever I read the Bible, and I recognize a scripture as a song lyric, I put a little music note next to it.

  12. What a beautiful heartfelt post! Thank you. One of my favorites which has been a companion verse for my journey is "You have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you that you would go out and bear fruit, fruit that will last so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name." (John 15:16) It is engraved on my heart. Love that you went back to the choir 🙂

  13. "You have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you so that you would bring forth fruit, fruit that lasts and so the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name." John15:16 Love that you went back to the choir.

  14. I don't have a favorite, memorized verse to share, but thank you for this post. I've had some spiritual struggles during the last few years and your post was very heartfelt and it really touched me. I look forward to reading more posts like this one.

  15. Sorry, it seems the reply function is not working for some reason.
Yes, I'm going through a specific situation with someone. I decided not to say anything just yet, I want to prepare for a talk like this. She brought up evolution as a fact that denies the existence of God.
