Serenity Now & Haven Blog Conference

Serenity Now & Haven Blog Conference

I have much love and respect for Amanda, the blogger who writes Serenity Now blog.  She was one of the first bloggers I developed a friendship with, and even though it was via the internet through her thoughtful comments and emails encouraging this new mom, I have since considered her a friend.  Amanda was the first blogger to ask me to guest post on her blog! and while she is out of town, I’m happy to guest post on her blog again!  I’m sure she’d appreciate you stopping by for a visit.  🙂  I posted an easy and healthy summer recipe from Honey We’re Healthy,

James’ Room // West Elm Shower Curtain into Drapes

James’ Room // West Elm Shower Curtain into Drapes

For James’ room, I wanted wide horizontal blue and white striped drapes, and made them from a West Elm Shower Curtain.  The color is called dusty navy and the material is 100% cotton.  Three problems: 1) I prefer a rod pocket as opposed to the way it’s meant to hang on hooks, 2) it’s too short for the room at 74×72 inches, and 3) it’s not lined.

I’m no seamstress, but I figured I could try what Amanda Carol did and buy three curtains, and use the third one for added length.

Revival Market // Steel Cut Oatmeal

Revival Market // Steel Cut Oatmeal

I don’t normally post my instagram pics (@honeywerehome) on the blog, I prefer to keep them more intimate snapshots of day-to-day life, but Sunday morning’s breakfast I can’t stop thinking about.  If you are in Houston, Revival Market is a local spot in an area of town known as the Heights.  The Market is popular for it’s fresh selection of meats and food goods, but is also a deli and breakfast cafe.  I tried it for breakfast for the first time this weekend, and was hooked after the first sip of coffee.  I love a good cup of coffee in the morning (so much so that I added a “Coffee and Tea”

$100 Pillow GIVEAWAY // Festive Home Decor

$100 Pillow GIVEAWAY // Festive Home Decor

Happy Friday friends! On Monday, I shared a new source I found on Etsy for pillow covers, Festive Home Decor.  Undecided between a punchy yellow and a sophisticated brown for my dining room, I ordered both and asked for your help in deciding which looked best.

Y’all are so awesome and gave me lots to think about.  Brown was the winner by 9 votes, but several people suggested changing them out seasonally- keep the yellow for summer and use the brown in the fall.

I do think I might prefer the brown overall,

Washi Tape Kitchen Spatulas

Washi Tape Kitchen Spatulas

Neon colors are HOT right now, so I wasn’t surprised to find these elecrifyinly bright tapes at Target recently.  Seems Scotch brand has jumped on the washi bandwagon:) They are in the paper/school supply section of the store.  The smaller washi tapes on the left were purchased online at Cutetape.com or Wishywashi.com.

I’m thinking, I’ve already taped a shoebox lid, plumbing, and my office bookshelves, “What else can I tape around my house?” Kitchen rubber spatulas??  The colors are perfect!  Why not?!

Aren’t these fun!

Mini Lace Potted Plants

Mini Lace Potted Plants

Why are miniature anything so cute?!  From little baby clothes to mini clothespins, I swoon.  I have a terrible time resisting these little plants when they call to me from the grocery store sidewalk.  So much cuteness for just $1.49.

At home, I put put the plant into an equally adorable mini terra cotta planter that I found at Michael’s.

And then embellished the pot with decorative white lace trim.

The lace affixes easily to the planter with a simple knot tied in the front.

But I also like the look from behind.

Bar Styling

Bar Styling

Thank you for weighing in on the dining room pillow dilemma yesterday! I love hearing your opinions and I’m liking the suggestion of using the yellow for now since it’s summertime, and using the brown come fall.  I plan to style the table soon and show you how it turned out.

Today, I’m turning my attention to the area just next to the dining room- the butler’s pantry, and specifically, the bar.  I’m a big fan of bar carts and bar styling, but have never really “styled” our bar area until recently.  It’s fun to play around with the different bottles and accessories and see how it looks.

Dining Room Pillows (Yellow or Brown?)

Dining Room Pillows (Yellow or Brown?)

Hi friends! It’s good to be back from a little time off last week.  We are taking things one day at a time, and have had a lot of family togetherness, which feels really good.  I did some things around the house that I haven’t shown here yet, so I plan to put together more posts this week.  It will be good to clear my head and distract from the heavy-hearted things that I cannot control.  Thank you again so much for the prayers for my Dad- they really mean so much.

We’ve been eating more meals in the dining room lately and especially after finding these gorgeous,

Can I just say that I am truly grateful for the love and support I felt from your prayers and warm wishes for my dad over the weekend.  Even if you did not comment, I still felt lifted up and appreciate so very much that you took a minute out of your day to pray for my family.  I normally don’t post the not-too-pretty side of life since my blog is my “happy place” but this was just too important not to reach out.  My family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.  We got a chance to have a nice visit this weekend and it was good to just be together.

Prayers

Prayers

I’m so thankful to have many wonderful people who read this blog.  If you happen to be one of those readers who believes in the power of prayer, my family would appreciate prayers for my dad.  He’s not doing too well, but I know God is the ultimate Healer and can restore his health.  I know that when we pray, especially multiple people praying over the same situation, God hears our prayers.  I appreciate you so much.

Pins of the Week

Pins of the Week

Part of the reason I love Pinterest so much is because it allows me to track and organize all of my pins and then use my boards as a resource for home projects, future blog posts, and food/fashion ideas.  I most often pin to these boards:  Yummy (526 pins); Crafty (409 pins); Christmas (350 pins); Love & Fashion, Beauty, Hair (tied at 308 pins); Yes Please (282 pins); Paper and Things (180 pins); and Organization and Cleaning (126 pins).

I also love to see what y’all are repinning- this lets me know what you are most interested in and what you like.

Pillow Covers // Goods by Grinn

Pillow Covers // Goods by Grinn

I’m changing up the color in a few of our rooms (guest bedroom, living room, and master sitting room) and started searching for pillow covers.  Etsy is, of course, a great resource, but I feel like I’m seeing the same patterns/colors over and over in a lot of the shops.  I stumbled upon Goods by Grinn on Pinterest (my addiction!) and was instantly excited over her pillows.  And at great prices- around $36 for a 20×20 inch cover with a zipper closure. 🙂  You can buy pillow inserts at places like Hobby Lobby, Joanns, and Michaels.

DIY // Duct Tape Snakeskin Mouse Pad & Tray

DIY // Duct Tape Snakeskin Mouse Pad & Tray

One of my favorite stylists and graphic designers, Fabulous K, created a very cool snakeskin frame by wrapping an inexpensive wooden frame with “Pretty Snakey” duct tape.  So cute! You can find the duct tape at Target for just a couple dollars.

I took the idea in another direction and made a mouse pad for my desk and a tray for my bedroom.  I simply covered each item with the tape- easy peasy!

Thanks for the inspiration Kelly!

Home Tour Gorgeousness // Simply Modern Home

I hope y’all are enjoying a wonderful 4th of July weekend!  I’ve got some weekend home inspiration for you courtesy of Susan from the blog Simply Modern Home.  She’s a wife and mom to two kiddos and it’s no surprise that she is a designer because her home is so beautifully and tastefully decorated.  Her blog title is truly representative of her design style.  I love how she artfully chooses just a few specific pieces and pulls them all together to create a gorgeous and inviting space.  Can I come over?!

For instance, check out this dining room.

Have a Happy 4th of July!

Have a Happy 4th of July!

I hope you all are gearing up for a happy 4th of July!  I’m excited about an extra long weekend and, although I don’t think I’ll be doing much cooking, if I was baking something, this cheesecake never disappoints.  The recipe is from Barefoot Contessa and I just garnished it with fresh berries for a colorful kick.  I only make it about once a year, but it’s heavenly.

P.S. I’ve heard a lot of talk about Google Reader closing down and I did use that reader so it was a bummer for me, but it forced me to find Netvibes,

Organized Kitchen // Bread in a Basket

Organized Kitchen // Bread in a Basket

We are definitely not a carb-free family.  In fact, we have so much bread that it won’t fit into a typical bread bin.  I’ve tried putting the bread in a drawer (that didn’t last long) and in the pantry (but who wants to walk to the pantry to get a piece of bread to toast?).  So, the bread pretty much was just sitting out on the kitchen counter next to the toaster.

What is all that bread anyway? We’ve got Mom and son’s 100% whole wheat, thick cut brown sugar bread for French toast, Dad’s Oatnut bread,

Under Sink Organization with Washi Tape

Under Sink Organization with Washi Tape

Under my bathroom sink might look very similar to what you’ve got going on with yours- a few bins filled with extra bath items and an albeit necessary, but in-the-way and not-so-pretty big, white pipe.  And those two other smaller, but equally unsightly, pipes too.  Please tell me I’m not the only one that is bothered by this.  Not bothered like I think about it all day, but bothered enough to try to make it prettier.

So, I busted out the paint and washi tape . . .

Call me crazy, but with all this fun washi tape laying around,
