Blogging & Social Media

In just a couple of months, Cassie (Hi Sugarplum), Courtney (A Thoughtful Place), and Carmel (Our Fifth House) will be talking about blogging and Social Media at the Haven blog conference.  As we prepare, I wanted to reach out to YOU (who better to ask?!) and find out what forms of social media you like best (and worst) and what questions you have about how to use social media.

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know I love Pinterest and Instagram (@honeywerehome), have started to become more active on Facebook, but Twitter kinda overwhelms me.   What about you?  If you are a reader or blogger, I’d love to hear from you! I just recently figured out how to link my Twitter and FB accounts, but I like to keep Pinterest separate for fear of bombarding FB/Twitter with my many daily pins!  Because I really enjoy Pinterest and Instagram, I’m most active there but I wonder if any of you are really reading tweets/tweeting.  I feel like so many people are on Twitter that my tweets would just get “lost” in feed- does that make sense?
Tell me what you think in the comments if you get a chance.

  1. For some reason I find twitter to be my go to over fb. I love me some instagram too. Facebook has become so clogged with websites, ads, and others that I was getting more hits from twitter than anything else.

  2. Wish I was attending so I could meet up with all of you. I am so not the person to ask about Social Media. While I finally got both a Pinterest Account and Instagram, I rarely use either. And, I am not a fan nor do I have FB or Twitter. I lost a lot of good friends due to FB. Those who used to pick up the phone to call now feel the only way to communicate is on their wall! Sad, but true. And, while many of the larger blogs I read have accounts to all of those things the only things I read/look at are their daily posts.

  3. Hey Megan, having started a blog 5 months ago I'm still overwhelmed with all of the social media sites out there. I'd say I'm most comfortable with Facebook and Pinterest. Instagram is new to me but I do like it. I also have a Twitter acct but, honestly, I don't really use it or read tweets.
Wish I could make the conference this year. I'm putting it on the calendar for next year for sure!

  4. Hi Megan,

I LOVE FB, Pinterest, just started using Instagram, but don't get G+ or Twitter…they frustrate me!
I would definitely love to see some blogging tips from you in the future.

  5. I really like Instagram right now. I go through phases with social media. I do really enjoy Pinterest and just started getting into Hometalk and love them both. I'm with you Twitter isn't my fave. I'm on it, but I am not crazy for it. Look forward to hearing what you guys put together at Haven 🙂 xo Kristin

  6. Great question. In my personal life, nothing beats Facebook. In business, Instagram has become my new addiction. A picture says a 1000 words for sure. Plus it's linked to my biz FB and Twitter so I hit three in one shot. Sweet. Pinterest I use to source ideas for clients and for general inspiration. I've also found great resources for design items. As a designer though, nothing beats Houzz It's the number one source now for my business and I now write for them as a freelancer, and interact there all day long with readers and other design professionals. loves.

  7. I like FB for close friends and family that I know in real life, and to see updates on personal blog pages etc. I like it mostly to stay up to date with friends photos and status updates.

As for Twitter, I use it to find out about news, celebrity gossip or something I'm interested in like what people though of the latest episode of Mad Men (this is where hashtags come in handy!!). It is really useful for "conversation" too, more than FB. You can break down who you follow into categories, much like Google Reader allows you to. I have a list on my Twitter account of all the bloggers I read, people who tweet about celeb gossip, entertainment, one for food and recipes and another for retail stores because they often tweet out special deals and sales.

To me Instagram is similar to FB but seems more up to the minute and accessible, but shorter winded.

And who doesn't like Pinterest? I mainly use it like I think most people do… to bookmark ideas, recipes, etc.

  8. Hi Megan,

I'm on FB, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram. That's more than enough for me! Twitter is a bit overwhelming but fun. To me, my Instagram is more personal, with family and close friends. Pinterest is the best!

  9. not going to lie, as much as i love social media, there is just too many things now. twitter, facebook, instagram, pinterest, vine, etc… i use instagram and pinterest the most. i am getting into twitter too.

  10. HI Megan!

I am comfortable with Facebook and Pinterest. I get nervous linking them all together and being too overwhelming to others. I like that there is the option though. I don't use Twitter and don't plan to. Less is more to me. I don't want social media to take over all of my time! 🙂 I love your blog! Keep up the good work!

  11. I love pinterest, facebook & instagram! I can't seem to figure twitter out so I don't use it. The same like you, I feel like my tweets would get lost in in the feed as well.

  12. For blogging purposes I like Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram the best. I get a lot of traffic from Facebook and Pinterest… not really from Instagram but I love interacting with other bloggers there and the option to share my picture to both Facebook and Twitter at the same time. I don't see a lot of traffic from Twitter and personally don't really use it that much. I'm just too visual. There are other great social networks out there but honestly I can only be so "social". Besides what's the point of being "social" if it leaves you zero time for blogging.

  13. Hi Megan! I'm like you – LOVE blogs and Pinterest. I know I'd love Instagram too, but I haven't let myself try it out because I think it would be too much for me. I'm not a big fan of facebook. I have an account because so many readers like to follow that way and I try to pop in each time I post, but I feel like it can be such a huge time sucker so I don't get on it very often. And twitter I just can't do. I want to have a life away from my phone and computer so it has worked for me to focus on Pinterest and blogging (my favorites) and let the rest slide. Maybe I'll feel different when I'm in a different stage of life, but while my kids are little I don't like so many distractions that pull me away from them. Wish I could hear all of you speak! I'm sure you will be fabulous!

  14. As a somewhat newbie blogger (6 months) I find that I am torn on the topic of social media. I love Pinterest and Instagram for my blog, but I don't have Twitter and my Facebook is my personal account. I sometimes wonder if adding a facebook page for my blog would be helpful, but then I feel like it is one more thing to distract me. I would rather spend my time working on projects/materials for my blog than worrying about updating the facebook page. I would rather promote my blog by being a guest blogger on other blogs and hosting guest bloggers on my blog, I feel like that is a more effective way to get more followers. Just my two cents, can't wait to see what you learn at the conference!

  15. I love Instagram!!! I agree with LiveLoveDecorate…a picture says a thousand words. I like Facebook a lot because I can scroll through the newsfeed of which I have marked those that I want to see the most and ones that I don't want to see as often are marked accordingly in the settings option. I love Pinterest of course but Twitter is not something that I plan on using. Too much minutiae from what I have seen in my brief exposure to it.

  16. I have been turned off to Twitter as well. I love, love Pinterest, and I am more savvy at Facebook, but I don't have a Twitter account and I sort of use Instagram, but only for personal right now. I will say I probably do need to do more on my blog FB page and possibly get a Twitter account set up, but I'm ok with taking that slow. I hope the ladies are able to blog a bit about what they discuss at Haven for those who can't attend this year. I can use all the help I can get! Ha!

  17. I just started this blogging thing and Instagram is for sure my favorite. It is a great way to stay connected and gives a lot of insight into peoples lives. Pictures do life much more justice than words sometimes. I love Pinterest but have never tried Twitter, like you, it overwhelms me. I'm active on my personal Facebook account with friends, but not through my blog. I'm not sure if I will ever attempt Twitter, it is questionable, as of my Instagram is where it's at.

  18. I know I'm at the opposite end of the norm, but…. I'm a blogger, I have a FB page that I use only for adding new post links and, of course, Pinterest. But other than that, nothin'. I don't own a cell phone, IPad, laptop, or any other device that allows for socialization. I get on my old school computer to write posts and read other blogs. Outside of that, I'm playin' in the dirt. 🙂

  19. Hi Megan

I absolutely can't stand FB. In fact, if a business suggests I 'like' them to get a discount I completely switch off and move onto the next business. I, like some others who have commented, have lost friends due to their inability to do anything but FB their news. Ghastly. I think it also hints at a cheap no brainer way of building a business, a bit like advertising in cheap fliers versus targeted sophisticated marketing. I use Pinterest – classy. I use Instagram – more personal by a long way than FB. I cannot grasp Twitter though – all those #@#@ bits get in the way of real words for me 🙂

  20. Twitter is my go-to. Once you get used to it, it's such an easy way to stay in touch with my viewers/readers. I find most of my subscribers use Twitter. I link my videos and blog posts there. I do use Facebook but not often enough. I mainly opened a page for those that do not use Twitter. Instagram is a favorite as well and Pinterest. 🙂 xo Crystal

  21. I mainly use FB. I have a Titter account (thanks for the tip on linking the two together! I never thought about that…) but like you I just don't feel like I "get" it. And of course, I have a very active Pinterest account. I'd use that if I was blogging or not!

  22. I'm not a huge fan of Twitter and just posted about this on Instagram the other day. I don't 'get' twitter like IG. Facebook….I tend to not get on FB which means my business page suffers. My personal FB account is draining and seems very negative. I'll find you on Instagram, my favorite!! Yay!

  23. I am really good about using FB and Pinterest. I just started using Instagram a couple of weeks ago and I am enjoying that. I am probably the only blogger alive not using Twitter. I don't really understand it yet. I suppose I need to learn since such a small number of my FB followers are actually seeing my posts. There are only so many hours in the day and it's hard to stay on top of all four forms of social media.

  24. I use FB for personal communication with friends and Pinterest to gather ideas and inspiration. I do have a twitter account, but it's somewhat anonymous. I don't really post anything there, but I follow all of the people and stores I am interested in keeping up with. I mostly use it to follow the retail locations that I don't want to follow on FB to keep my news feed from being full of retailer posts. This way I can keep FB fun and use Twitter to know when a sale is happening or Starbucks has a new flavor of latte!

  25. I use fb ad more of a friends only type of thing. If I'm feeling crafty or need inspiration, I go to Pinterest. I DO NOT want to see 50 million recipes in my news feed. I also use Instagram a lot (both for friends, design, workout, etc.) I use twitter the least…maybe because I have too much to say 🙂

  26. Agh, wish I could see all my favourite ladies speak at Haven 🙁 🙁 🙁 You are all going to rock that panel! I love to use Pinterest and Instagram. I feel like they give the most "personal" insight into me and my life. I use Twitter but honestly, some days, I avoid it. It can feel overwhelming. Its great though for connecting with local people and with brands. I'm weaning myself off Facebook. I keep a page for the blog, but my personal Facebook is at a bare minimum – I feel like I can't control who sees what over there.

One thing I've come to realize is that everyone has their "thing", that one social media outlet where they shine. For some fashion bloggers I know, its Instagram. For others its Twitter (they're really good at making those 140 characters count!). I have a strong following on Pinterest and I know I need to cultivate that more somehow – when I find the time 😉
