BOY

My little baby is turning into a full fledged BOY.  We had a date night last Friday which included a trip to the bookstore (his request) and dinner at a restaurant, just the two of us.  I told him when I dropped him off at school that when I picked him up we were going on a date.  Hours later when I returned, the first thing he said when I walked into his class was, “Are you ready for our date, Mom?”  So sweet!

But he’s not all sweet all the time anymore.  He wants to play rough, pretend he’s Darth Vader, and challenge me.  We can’t go anywhere without his lightsaber or Mack/Mater/McQueen.  He tells me, “No,” goes straight to time-out for one minute, and then chastizes with that pouty face, “Don’t be ugly to me!”  And he wants to negotiate all the time.  Mr. Let’s Make A Deal, I swear.
He’s developing his independence and exploring the world.  Finding out what he likes to do and what makes him happy.  Testing boundaries and asserting himself.  Asking questions and making connections.  Struggling with discipline and rules. Getting so good at talking and communicating.  He might be more and more boy, but he is still so friendly and outgoing, talks to everyone, and loves to give hugs and kisses.  He’s already teaching me more about myself as a person and woman and mother than I’m probably offering him.  I get lessons in patience and self-control and staying “in the moment” daily.  I’m so proud to be his mom- I feel like I should thank him on Mother’s Day for coming into my life and making me a mom.  It’s the best thing in the whole world.

  1. Oh, Megan. This is beautiful. He really is growing into his own person and you are offering him an amazing love and life. He is so very lucky to call you Mommy. Cutie pie!

  2. So sweet! So funny that boys are boys, no matter what. My son is light saber-obsessed, too. And turns everything into a gun. My daughter would have never even thought of turning something into a weapon when she was a preschooler. It's just written in their DNA!

  3. Aww.. He is just beautiful Megan! At this age, you can really get a great feel for what their personality, quirks and disposition are going to be and it's so fun to see glimpses. I agree, they are truly such a gift and we are so thankful every moment to be their Mommies!

Have a great week and by the way, I had to change my email address because of a virus. My new email is attached to this note. I'm so excited you're going to Haven and I would love to get together with you before hand! big hugs!

  4. Welcome to the age of 3!!! People always are amazed when I tell them I would rather teach hundreds of two years olds, than to take on 10 three year olds. Welcome to the age of , "No, and you can't make me!" LOL Yes, they become more assertive, yes, they test the boundaries and and limits you give them, and yes, they now have an opinion. But, don't worry, this too is only a phase!! Well, truth be told…all of those things will continue, but your negotiating skills will improve! LOL

  5. He is darling…and sounds exactly like my little boy. He wore his batman cape to school today and thinks he rules the house. Not the case. 🙂

  6. ohmygosh, I'm choked up!! such sweet words..you're the best mommy. and he's the yummiest. but no matter how big or cool, he'll always be your baby boy!

  7. Your words touched my heart. I could picture the different scenarios of your son being his own person, yet also needing the affection from his mommy. And you struggling to let him be a bit more independent, but getting frustrated when he pushes too far. In the end, though, I see a Mom who dearly loves her son just as he loves his Mom. This is a beautiful picture – one that made my heart ache.
    Happy Mother's Day!

  8. Oh, I felt like I could have written this! The "terrible" two's weren't terrible at all. The twos were so good to us. Threes certainly aren't terrible either but I, too, am taking daily lessons in patience.:)

  9. What a sweet post! As a momma of a boy but as a girl who grew up in a family of ALL GIRLS, I am pretty sure I have no clue what's coming at me in the near future. At 8 months, my little man is already "all boy" with the way he plays and explores. It's so fun watching them hit all of these phases!!

  10. What a great post to read! My baby boy just turned one, I look forward to seeing him grow up and go through all the fun stages!
