Spinach & Fruit Smoothie

I thought for sure making a sweet fruit smoothie with some spinach thrown in would be a certain way to get my 3 year-old to eat some veggies.  No way.  One taste and he spit it right out all over my cowhide rug.  Thankfully, it wiped off just fine.

I used a big handful of spinach and about a cup of frozen fruit with 1/2 cup of water.  It tasted fine at that point, but a little bland.  Because it was intended for James, I sweetened it with one of his toddler yogurts and a tablespoon of honey.

It was yummy, but he didn’t like it.  I drank it all and will make it again.  For myself.

In the future, I think I’d add protein powder or greek yogurt for added protein.

Do you or your kids like spinach smoothies?  How do you make yours?

  1. I make them every morning! Sometimes I use kale, often add a frozen banana, and many times make them two at a time so I'm washing the blender less often!

  2. I just do (I should clarify…did) spinach, strawberries, banana, milk (or almond milk) and I have no idea what kind of sweetener I used, but it was amazing!

I need to get my butt in gear!

Have you checked out Oh She Glows blog?

  3. I love smoothies! I always use almond milk and protein powder and I add frozen cherries and half of a banana. I will switch out the fruit with seasonal berries. My sister has done blueberries and half of an avocado with spinach and that is good too!!!

  4. I've done the same for my two year old and he doesn't like it either! Sometimes if I juice veggies (spinach, kale, cucumber) then blend the juice with fruits AND freeze them into popsicles he will actually eat them… Sometimes.

  5. I love spinach/green smoothies! My favourite at the moment is banana, pineapple, mango, chard, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg – tastes like a tropical Christmas! haha But spinach + fruit (I usually do raspberries and mango) + a banana + water is always a great combo.

  6. My 3 yr old loves smoothies! I use spinach, banana, strawberries, blueberries & protein powder. Now my 6 yr old on the other hand will NOT touch a green smoothie! She wants hers "pink" which is strawberries & little but of banana.

  7. No, they do not like spinach smoothies. Even if I make it without them seeing the spinach. They claim it is bitter. I have tried adding more fruit, honey, yogurt, etc. Then I think I am defeating the purpose as it has too much sugar. My son is quite fond of juiced kale with carrots, cucumber, lemon, apple, and strawberries. He is disappointed if we do not have time to juice in the morning. He knows if kale is missing from the concoction. I should tell you he is a picky eater. Strange, huh?

  8. yumm!!! I make spinach and peach smoothies and I also make a spinach, pear, dates and a dash of cinnamon one too!

  9. I give my son a smoothie every morning – it's mostly fruit, bananas, strawberries, grapes… whatever I have around. Sometimes I add whey (the real stuff, from making homemade yogurt), or coconut milk. He loves them… and I also add in his daily dose of vitamins – a probiotic, Vitamin C, butter oil and cod liver oil too. He gobbles it right up!!

I should mention that he just turned 1… and he completely turned up his nose at the Paleo brownie I made him. He wanted no part of it!! But he gobbles up that cod liver oil!

And Yvette, I have a Vitamix and it's wonderful!!! I got the most basic model at BedBath&Beyond.

  10. My friend was just encouraging me to put spinach in my smoothies this past week. So, when I go shopping tomorrow, I'm going to pick some up to add to my shakes. I typically use greek yogart and frozen fruit. Sometimes, I put protein powder in it…just depends on my mood.

  11. I found a smoothie recipe on Pinterest with spinach that tastes really good. I used frozen strawberries, a banana, Almond Milk, and I use Chocolate Whey protein powder. Very yummy you can't taste the spinach.

  12. I will have to get Katie to experiment when she gets home from school. She is the smoothie queen. I have found kale to be not quite as bitter in them. And, truth be told…haven't tried it but I am thinking zucchini would work, similar texture to melons, not a lot of flavor (cucumber too?). This is where Katie comes in…she is creative and will try anything at least once!!

  13. I make smoothies every morning with spinach and greek yogurt. This is a go-to for me:

    1.5 cups spinach
1 cup non-fat greek yogurt (I use chobani or fage)
    1 whole banana
3/4 cup almond milk (I usually eyeball it based on how thick I want my smoothie to be)

I also frequently throw in some frozen mixed berries from Trader Joes…delish!

    Enjoy 🙂

  14. I do mines with almond milk, spinach, banana, strawberries, chocolate whey protein, peanut butter(kids love it) and teaspoon of honey/agave nectar.without peanut butter I don't think my kids would like it

  15. I make them daily for my toddler girls. I add about 1/2 cup of water, a spoonful of any yogurt on hand (sometimes greek) a handful of frozen mixed berries, a handful of spinach, 1/2 a banana, and a sprinkle of flax seed and wheat germ and mix. They drink it all up! It is usually a pink color with green flakes. Good luck! We also love apples and greens smoothie from Jamba Juice.

  16. I and my one year old son love green smoothies. Sometimes he will go over to the counter where my blender sits and whine or if I'm lucky sign for something to eat. I have found I can't put any dairy (including yogurt) in them or they seem to get gross quickly. My favorite is frozen bananas, strawberries, peaches, and a ton of spinach with a splash of orange juice and just enough water. The juice really makes a difference.

  17. I just started making myself a fruit and spinach smoothie every morning and I love them. I mix it up the type of fruit but the base is always the same: fresh spinach, greek yogurt, ground flax seed, almond milk and a dash of sugar-free vanilla pudding mix (adds a little creaminess and flavor!) – My 2 year old liked it ok but I think this summer I will freeze them into popsicles and see how she likes that.

  18. It is really an amazing idea to make smoothie or healthy Green drink for a 3 years old kid. I have a kid who is 4 years old. Now I will make a fruit smoothie for him with some green leafy veggies. I am sure he will have it with fun. It really looks yummy.
