Workout at Home (Fitness DVDs)

Although I prefer to workout at the gym or go for a jog in the park, I know many people like to work out at home or have no other option.  When I announced I was starting a fitness blog on Honey We’re Home, lots of you wrote in and told me about your at-home workouts that you enjoyed and saw results with.

Since I haven’t done any fitness DVD’s, I can’t give a personal review, but I was hoping that you could share in the comments section what DVD’s you like and what you had good experiences with.  I think other people could benefit from your knowledge.

Please share!

  1. The two DVD's Ive found the best results with are:
-Jari Love Slim & Lean (a weight lifting DVD)
-Tone It Up's DVD (toneitup.com) – which combines weights & cardio.

  2. I have done the Insanity DVD's. And although they're very challenging, it was definitely a great workout! I never got bored, but I knew some days I was not looking forward to what I was going to be doing! I lost a couple of lbs but I know if I would have watched my eating habits more, I could have had a much bigger loss like others. Either way–it's great for cardio but doesn't do much with lifting other than body weight exercises

  3. I have a couple of go-to Workout DVDs that I use:

Beginners/Low Impact – Leslie Sansone: Walk at Home – 5 Mile Fat Burning Walk. Its a 70 minute workout with cardio and strength training. Awesome workout, especially if someone is just getting started and wants to build endurance.

Intermediate – Jillian Micheal's 30 Day Shred. OH MY. This will kick some butt; however, works wonders.

    Hope this information helps!

  4. This is more of a DVD that comes with a purchase of equipment. I purchased the TRX for my husband because I thought he would think it was an acceptable "manly" exercise program to do at home. He had this idea that he couldn't get a good workout unless he was at the gym. He did really like it, and it works, but I have found that I am the one that uses it the most! I love that it takes only 20 minutes and I feel some definite muscle fatigue. Once you do the DVD a few times it's easy to not need it which is nice too.

  5. I LOVE P90x– I did it on top of running/cardio workouts I was already doing and it was really motivating especially seeing how quickly my body was changing for the better. Jillian Michaels also has awesome DVD's and her workouts are around 30 minutes or so which is time efficient and though short always make me sore!

For me, workout DVD's can bore me quickly {I love being outside or being in a class surrounded by other people} but I was challenged by P90x and Jillian michael's DVD's because the workouts were tough, quick, and I saw results!

  6. I have seen a lot of success in the past using The Firm system of DVDs. The offer equipment (steps, weights) that go along with the DVDs. I will be gettingback in a routine with these this week!

  7. I love any video by cathe freidrich! Whether its step aerobics, weight lifting or barre, I love all her workouts. I occasionally will do a p90x yoga or stretch video

  8. I had a lot of success with Power 90 by Tony Horton. He maps it out very easily and you progress as you a ready. He has some good recipes as well! I'm 5 months out from my wedding and will probably start Power 90 again or try Insanity!

  9. I was recommended a series of Jillian Michael DVDs by a friend of mine who has three kids and a full time job. She doesn't have time for an hour and a half workout everyday, so these truly worked for her. Trust me, she's in better shape than she was before her kiddos (and she was a marathon runner too) and she says she loves her body more now. I mix up between 30 Day Shred, Shred it with Weights, and 6 Week to 6 Pack. Each DVD has a series of 2-4 workout levels and is only 25-30 minutes each. I'm intrigued by her new series of DVDs called Body Revolution also.

  10. I love workout DVDs, especially in the winter when it's still dark outside in the mornings and I don't feel motivated to drive to the gym in the cold temps!

Some of my personal favorites to build muscle:

    – Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred
    – Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30 (more intense than 30 Day Shred

    Cardio favorite:

-Turbo Fire (great for HIIT workouts)

  11. I can't say enough about the Physique 57 dvds, they have changed the way i think about exercise as well as changing my body. Here is the testimonial i wrote for their website "I received the 6 DVD set as a birthday present…I am totally in awe of how Physique 57 is changing my body and my life for the better. It has changed the way I think about fitness and I actually look forward to my workouts. So far I have lost 2 inches off my waist, 1 inch from my hips and 1/2 an inch from each thigh and my body has never felt stronger or looked more toned. This is the hardest hour you will ever love, I am a Physique 57 fan for life."

  12. I think Jillian Michaels' workouts are great, but with all work-out DVDs, it gets kind of old after a while. I love, love, love the Nike Training App, though. It has so many different workouts to accommodate both your workout level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) and what you are trying to accomplish (get toned, get lean, get focused…). I just do these workouts on my phone or iPad and actually prefer them to the gym.

  13. Kate Potter's Namaste Yoga DVD's are THE BEST for anyone looking to relax and stretch it out! I fell in love with mine and do a different set 3-4 times a week without complaint. Hope this helps from Stephanie @ Sevendaysandsunny.blogspot.com

  14. I have never been to gym before but I love to workout at home because of my schedule made easier!

Here's my workout that I had successfully lost 20 lbs so far…

    Jillian Michael's 30 day Shred
    Turbo Fire programs
Physique 57 (that is my favorite barre workout)
Jessica Smith's Cardio ABS dvd (I Love her kickboxing and abs workouts, Pretty challenge!)
Ellen Barrett dvds (Mostly barre type of workout)

  15. I love both P90x and Insanity. P90x requires weights and either a pull-up bar or resistance bands. Insanity requires no equipment and is very high impact, so watch out if you have joint issues! Check eBay before paying full price.

  16. I'm an advocate for Insanity and talk about it some on my fitness blog – http://www.i-heartfitness.blogspot.com. I also just love keeping some good workout equipment (i.e. Kettlebells, weights, bands, etc.) so I can workout while watching TV rather than just sitting there. For the most part though, like you, I run a lot outside (training for a half) and go to the gym. xoxo

  17. I used Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred and Ripped in 30 last year {finished 30 Day Shred first then moved on to Ripped in 30} and saw very impressive results. My husband even enjoyed using them. I love that they are only 30 minutes of your day and you get great results {and mix cardio, strength and abs}.

  18. I love any dvd by Jillian Michaels. I used the 30 day shred and lost 8 lbs then did her 90 day body revolution and lost an additional 15 lbs (this was my post baby wt loss). She is amazing! She is a mean b, but that is why I love her dvd's. Very motivating and quick results, too.

  19. I love Jillian Michaels workout dvds. I lost 8 lb. with her 30 day shred and then an additional 15 lb. with her 90 day body revolution. She is a mean b, but that is why I love her. They really work and you do get quick results.

  20. I really like The Bar Method dvd's. It's helpful if you've been to a class or two, but not totally necessary.

Jillian Michael's 30 day shred is good to if you're just getting started. But I got a little bored with it after a while.

  21. I had great success with the P90X routine. I did the classic and then switched to the Lean to burn more fat. Works great if you do follow the meal plan as well. After all iti s all about eating right while working out.

I also love the Physique 57 workouts, which give you the lean dancer body.

  22. Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred is amazing! 25 minutes,3 circuits of: 3minutes of strength, 2minutes of cardio, and 1 minute of abs. With a warm up and cool down. Works wonders!

  23. Another vote for the Jillian Michaels DVDs! That girl is no joke. I've never felt like I've gotten such a good workout from a DVD in 20-30 minutes. I get up at 5 and workout before the kids get up and we all head to work and daycare, and I don't have time for an hour+ workout anymore.

  24. I have quite a few DVDs. Bob Harper's "Inside Out Method" DVDs are some of my favorite but they are all very intense. I would say they are intermediate or advanced, but I like them because for whatever reason, I don't find Bob's voice annoying even after weeks of playing them. I own the whole series, but they are often only 5 bucks each on his website, and I've even seen them at Target. I love Jillian Michaels' "Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism DVD the best out of all hers, but her her voice can get a bit more annoying after a while.

  25. I love workout videos and workout out in our garage. I've used Jillian Michael's 30 day shred and Beachbody Insanity Videos ($30 on Craigslist). Also, tons of online resources where I just prop up my ipad and follow along. 🙂

  26. I still use and love the Billy Blanks Tae Bo DVDs. They are older but it's a great work out. I also recommend the Jillian Michaels DVD, her workouts are intense.

  27. I have done Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred, and it's awesome. It's only a 20 minute workout, and you think it would be really easy (I mean, it's only 20 minutes!)–but it's not. It's a hard workout, with three levels, each getting harder. Highly, highly recommend!

I also did Insanity. And this is definitely TOUGH. I think you probably need a good starting base to really get through this (without a lot of stopping), but I could be wrong. I'd say it was one of the best workouts of my life, and I got very trim.

Bottom line–you can have a good workout at home!

  28. I am a huge fan of Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred-I saw a noticeable difference and was impressed by how I looked and felt, and the workouts go by quickly. I am also a huge fan of the Lotte Berke Method Hip Hugger Abs. It will not give you a 6-pack, but it works quickly in "sucking" them back in. It has been my first exercise DVD after the birth of each child, and when I started slacking on weights, etc, and I noticed a pooch again, I knew it was the DVD to turn to. Can't recommend it enough for a quick, relaxing exercise.

  29. I love Bethenny Frankel's Body by Bethenny. It is mainly yoga with some added strength training in it. I also love the Zumba Exhilarate DVD set. This gets your heart pumping and is so much more fun that running on a treadmill.

  30. I use the Cindy Crawford workout video, joking, but does anyone remember that? Lots of swinging your arms and legs around!

  31. I like Cathe Frederich's DVDs. They are easily available from Collage Video, online. You can preview each video before you buy. They sell a wide variety of videos.

  32. I like Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred, its about a 20 minute workout but its not easy! You will be sweating when its over because it includes strength, cardio and abs. Its great for beginners since there are a few levels of intensity.

  33. I will never stop singing the praises of p90x! Tony Horton is more motivating to me than any other home fitness, DVD trainer. I had incredible results in my first 90 days and never looked back to the old way I used to live my life.

  34. At work a group of us use Leslie Sansone's Walking program DVDs. Each of these DVDs are usually an hour or longer, but we break them down to 30 mins and try to walk 2 miles a day. Just another way to keep you active and burn a few more calories a day.

  35. LOVE..LOVE..Love the " TURBO FIRE" w this super cute instructor who is so motivating. It's like P90X for chicks:)

  36. I'm so excited to see y'all sharing your favorite videos here! I'll do a roundup soon so everyone can see which ones people repeatedly noted seeing results with. Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

  37. TurboFire is definitely my favorite but I love Insanity as well. Both are great for cardio. It wasn't until I did Les Mills Pump (now available in DVD's for home) that I started seeing muscles and I got so much stronger.

  38. I'm also doing the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred (just started this week) and I am feeling it! I feel self-conscious at the gym (not to mention it's expensive), so this is a nice alternative.

  39. I like using Sweatn.com to find free workout videos. Jillian Michaels 30 day shred and Denise Austin's Cardio Burn are some good workouts that I have been able to find on sweatn.com.

  40. I'm trying P90X but I also like the different 10 minute videos on fitsugar.com – I can do a bunch and not get bored! Jillian's 30 Day Shred and Biggest Loser yoga are good too …..
