Media Cabinet Organization

Continuing with my January organizing theme, I’ve been digging deep into those pockets in my house that have been neglected and in dire need of some organizational attention.  We are fortunate to have a large built-in media cabinet in the living room with lots of storage.  It’s got four deep drawers and four cabinets with double shelves.   It looks so nice from the outside . . .

But inside was a complete mess!

I’m so glad that I finally got in there and cleaned it out!  I ended up with an empty drawer and cabinet when I was finished!

I have no idea about this video game business but at least it’s organized now.

We don’t really watch DVD’s either, but now I know what we have.
Having a dedicated drawer for diapers, wipes, and diaper cream has been awesome- so handy!
I love having all the batteries and light bulbs in one place.  We could use more spare light bulbs, but at least we have room for them.  I also like to light candles in the evening, so the tea lights are ready to go.
The batteries are stored by size in an extra silverware divider that I wasn’t using.  It’s a great solution for being able to see what batteries we have at a glance.  With kids’ toys, we always need batteries.
I’m most excited about making room for James’ crayons, coloring books, and play dough.  Then, we parked his “special” cars on the bottom shelf.
I printed “James’ Art Tray” from my computer and laminated it, then stuck it to the tray with double-sided tape.
The crayon and marker holder is just a plastic dollar-store type container.  I went through and got rid of all the dried out markers and markers missing their caps.  It’s nice to be able to pull the whole thing out if he wants to color and then put it away behind closed doors.
I used to keep James’ medicine in one of the drawers for convenience, and I’m glad now to have moved it up to the medicine cabinet where there is no chance he can get into it.
Are y’all still in the organizing/cleaning out spirit?

  1. I did the same with keeping diapers and wipes in our living room! It makes life so much easier! In fact, I had a basket of diapers & wipes in every room. My twins are almost four. Seems like yesterday I was changing twenty diapers/day! I do not miss those days 🙂

  2. If you don't watch DVDs you could always sell them or donate them. Boxed sets can usually be sold easily through amazon. Amazon actually buys them from you! It was great for us and we made a little extra cash 🙂

    Like your battery solution!

  3. We match! I too use a utensil organizer for batteries! Great minds… Also, I am in the organizing mood, but after my 4:30 a.m. workout, I think I'm going to take it easy today. Loving all of your organization ideas (the diapers and wipes idea is awesome!)

  4. Two things: 1)Take all those DVD's you don't watch to half price books! You won't get a ton for them, but you will get something. 2) Jimmy should sell back his games at game stop next time he goes to get one. Both of these were not easy things to convince Joe to do…but alas it cleared out space and gave us some extra coin. Hope you guys are well!!

  5. I think it's funny that you store diapers and wipes in your media cabinet! I suppose with a big house it is handy to have everything right there.

I moved all our DVD's into slim zip up cases – throw out those bulky plastic cases! I did have some anxiety about it and I even saved a couple special collections – but the rest went in black flip cases and I have never looked back. You could have an entire empty cabinet and you also can find everything you need quickly. I bought one case for my daughter's movies, one full of "boy" type movies and one for my husband and I. It has been a great space saver and I don't know why I didn't do it earlier.

I love your built-in media area but I would be constantly messing with those shelves. So many possibilities.

  6. Jealous of that diaper drawer. I know, of all things. But it would be so handy – no more hauling everyone upstairs just for a clean. Genius! thanks for sharing, liz

  7. So organized!!!! You are on a roll. I love the labels for James' artwork caddy. I am inspired to get my hidden messes cleaned up!

  8. I did this last year & believe it or not it's STILL organized! It really is the perfect place for batteries & light bulbs. I'm ready to get on the organizing bandwagon. I've been sick & haven't felt like doing a thing.

  9. I've been tearing through places too, and I'm shocked at all the extra space it frees up!! and omgee…all that xbox stuff…between that and your j's car…my little j is worshiping him!! 😉 (did you follow all those j's?)

  10. that battery storage is awesome! such a great idea to know exactly what you have and don't. ours are just all thrown in. gotta fix that w/ this!: )

  11. I don't mean this to sound mean in any way, but it was so refreshing to see the inside of your slightly untidy drawers. It gave me hope!!!! So thank you 🙂

Now I can't wait to get going on mine xXx

  12. Hi Megan! I don't know if you know, but batteries swallowed by little ones usually need to be surgically removed pretty quickly if swallowed. I am a peds nurse and have a 2 and a half year old myself and when I saw your post, the batteries jumped out at me. I know they are big, but if you have smaller ones you might want to stick them up higher. Otherwise great job on your media cabinet. It looks awesome! I did the same thing with a diaper drawer in our living room and it changed our life before our toddler was potty trained:) Maggie:)

    1. Yes! I realized that after I organized the batteries. I'm moving them to a high shelf that my son can't reach. Thank you for your comment. We have to be so careful with our little ones.

  13. Love your blog! I know your son is only a little man, so who the heck is the owner of the video games?! Your husband is so busted. I laughed because my husband also has video games, which were purchased looooong before our son was old enough to play. What is with men and their toys!
