Honey We’re Home Top 9 Posts (August)

While drafting this post, I realized how many things have gotten accomplished around the house lately:) Lest you get the misconception that I’m “doing it all”, I wanted to let you know that I’ve had extra time on my hands this month because I’m between jobs.   People sometimes ask how I work full time, keep up with my blog and home projects, manage to workout, and have a family.  I know I ask that same question to women too.

But, the answer is always the same, life is sometimes a juggling act, and no one does it all,

DIY (Kitchen Chalkboard Wall)

DIY (Kitchen Chalkboard Wall)

I’ve been on a roll with the paint lately, this time my attention was focused on a long blank wall in our kitchen.  I’d been toying with the idea of turning this mostly-hidden wall into a chalkboard wall for awhile, and when I saw the gorgeous array of Benjamin Moore chalkboard paint colors, I decided to take the plunge.  I thought it would be really fun for James (my 2 1/2 year old son) and a great place to put fun messages, menu items, or little reminders.

I chose Benjamin Moore Chalkboard Paint in Summer Nights (777).

I Heart Galveston

I Heart Galveston

Say what you will about dirty water and not-so-nice beaches, but Galveston island is only an hour drive from my house, is a great little getaway, and holds some very cherished memories. I made new memories recently too, since I got to spend some time in Galveston when James and I crashed Cassie’s (Hi Sugarplum) family vacation:)

Can you believe these bloggers only got ONE picture of themselves together that day?!  I’m on the left, she’s on the right, sisters anyone??

After hanging with Cassie and her kids, on the way home, I was left with the incredible feeling that I REALLY like them.

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

As soon as I saw the gorgeousness of Emily A. Clark’s painted kitchen cabinets, I knew I had to do the same thing to ours.  She took off her cabinet doors and painted the back wall Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams.  You can read her full post here.

Doesn’t that look great?!  I chose to paint the cabinets in our kitchen that already have glass doors.  I’m not sure what you’ve got going on at your house on Friday nights, but two Fridays ago, after James went to sleep, this was what I was doing .

Organized Paint Supplies & Organized Home Link Party

Organized Paint Supplies & Organized Home Link Party

Welcome to my Organized Home link party!  Y’all know how much I like to keep things organized and pretty at my house, but behind the scenes sometimes looks different.  There are many areas of our home that could use some help in the organization department.

I’ve been spending more time on home projects lately, but have been so annoyed when I’m looking for certain supplies and I can’t find them in the chaos of an unorganized garage.

I knew I needed to take control of my supplies and relocate them to my garage (our house has two separate garages) where I can organize them how I like and also keep them at my eye level.

My Pantry Makeover at I Heart Organizing

My Pantry Makeover at I Heart Organizing

Today is an exciting day for me for three reasons:

1.  My PANTRY is finally organized and now holds not just grocery staples, but my serving platters and large decorative items too.  Why didn’t I think to put those things in there before?? Here’s a sneak peek!

2.  I’m sharing my pantry overhaul in my first contributor post at I Heart Organizing.  You can read the full post HERE.

3.  I’m announcing a LINK PARTY that will start tomorrow at 6:00 a.m., where we will celebrate our organized homes (or at least an organized portion of our home- a drawer,

James and the Water Slide (Age 2 1/2)

James and the Water Slide (Age 2 1/2)

There’s just something about a mama and her little boy.  My 2 1/2 year old son has my whole heart, big time.  He’s a wild little adventurer, with a super sweet heart and big vocabulary.  He loves to sing loud, mouth wide open and play the guitar like a rock star.  More and more he craves freedom and independence and I hear lots of “I do it.” So I let him- most of the time.  In the morning, I patiently hold my hands in my lap while he struggles to get dressed by himself.  I wait for his request, “Help me”

Honey We’re Home on Television

Honey We’re Home on Television

The other day I received a message from Sally MacDonald, a gorgeous local reporter in our town.  She hosts a segment on Fox 26 called “Sally’s Shabby Chic” that features home decor and DIY projects on Saturday mornings.  We ended up shooting two segments at my house that aired last weekend.

Although Sally and Raymond (the camera man) were absolutely wonderful to work with and helped me feel very comfortable, I still think I looked (and sounded like!) a dork on camera.  We only did one take per project and it’s so hard not to be critical of yourself.

Kitchen Updates & Hydrangea Love

Kitchen Updates & Hydrangea Love

Like many of you, our kitchen is grand central station.  It’s one of my favorite rooms in the house because it has so much great storage, lots of natural light, and pretty fixtures and counters.  I love to keep fresh flowers in the kitchen and hydrangeas are a beautiful treat.  Today I’m sharing this bunch of blue, green, and white hydrangeas to brighten your Monday.

I mentioned that our kitchen gets a lot of natural light.  Maybe too much.  We have blinds but they look kind of “unfinished” since our living room and breakfast room have drapes.

DIY (Polka Dot Tissue Box)

DIY (Polka Dot Tissue Box)

Today, Cassie from Hi Sugarplum is hosting a link party for DIY projects that take “about an hour.’  I think that’s the only kind of DIY I know how to do, so it’s perfect for me:)  Ever since I used a polka dot fabric for a tablecloth in the Pottery Barn tablescape challenge, I’ve had polka dots on the brain.

Last week, I added some gold sequin dots to our boring tissue box holder with adhesive spray.  Yeah, definitely under one hour- more like ten minutes:)  And the sequins were only a couple dollars.

The Art of Gift (Certificate) Giving

The Art of Gift (Certificate) Giving

We recently celebrated my sister and brother in-laws’ birthdays.  They are about to move into a home they just built, so I knew they’d really appreciate a gift card to West Elm (one of their favorite decor stores).  They’ve already been “window shopping” and will enjoy getting to make some new purchases for their home.

Even when the gift I’m giving is a gift certificate, and really, who doesn’t appreciate one?, I still like to give the recipient a little something to “open” – a companion to the gift certificate that helps the card containing money feel more personal.

A Charmed and Happy Home

A Charmed and Happy Home

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the above quote from Deborah Needleman.  I picked up her book, The Perfectly Imperfect Home, and it really resonated with me.  Have you heard of it?  It’s a very easy read, full of honest, practical decorating advice.

Spending so much time and energy on making a house a home can sometimes feel frivolous.  This quote helped me realize that creating a happy home, one that you and your family enjoy being in, feel safe and comfortable in, where love, food, and romance abide,

Lamp Makeover with Greek Key Trim

Lamp Makeover with Greek Key Trim

Hi all!  Hope you had a lovely weekend and are ready for a great week.  I kicked off the weekend with a DIY project that took less than 45 minutes- my kind of project!  I transformed a pair of Homegoods lamps with spray paint and Greek Key trim.  I adore the result.

You may recall seeing these lamps before, because they have been through a previous transformation- that I wasn’t crazy about.  They were initially a faux distressed dull tan and I sprayed them navy blue and added a corresponding ribbon.  But even then,
