Making Art

Y’all know that my little guy loves to color, but we’ve really only painted once (in the backyard with washable paints).  Over the weekend, we headed to Michaels to pick up more supplies (acrylic paints, canvases, and paintbrushes) so we could both get in on the action.  I’ve never painted before, but I was inspired by Jen of Made by Girl to try to create some of my own art for my office at work.  I have the perfect wall for a large abstract painting above my desk.  I was going to have James make it at first, then I decided to not be scared to try it myself.  “Try it, you’ll like it!“- I could also be losing my mind since I’m now hearing Gabba Gabba when I type.

I doubt Jen’s studio looks like ours:)

Yeah, we set up shop in the garage (cold outside!) and worked on the floor.  James stepped on my first piece.  We really need easels.  I started playing around just to get the hang of it a little and when I feel more confident, I’ll move on to my big canvas.  I’ll be sure to show you when it’s finished:)

Have y’all tried painting?  I’ve seen some great work by Natalie and her son (Designer Bags and Dirty Diapers).  I’d love to see yours if you want to leave me a link in the comments.  Let’s have a great week!

I did so much more projects with baby #1. Poor second babe. I am definitely going to do some Valentine's art projects with the kids soon. So fun.

Looks like a sweet project! I took painting classes in college and loved them! I haven't had a chance to paint since then though. This would be so fun to do with my little man once he gets here!

You're such a fun mom! 🙂 What great memories you all are making together. 🙂 I'd like to think that if we had a garage or basement workshop, I'd get more messy with the kids…but I maybe that's just wishful thinking. Can't wait to see the finished art!

This sounds like a fun project and such a great way to encourage James to be creative! I hope to be able to get messy with my little girl when she gets a little bit older. Such a great bonding time.

Yes! Good for you! I tried this (and blogged about it) last year and my piece proudly hangs above our mantle. I am NOT an artist but it was such a fun project that I'd like to do it again for another mantle switcheroo. Looking forward to seeing your creation!

Thanks for the shoutout girl! Abstract painting is much harder than it looks! Just got your email last night but I guess you found the artwork. I just repainted over my canvas for the 3 time and I am finally happy with what I painted. I will probably post on the blog this week:) Can't wait to see yours and I bet James loved it. I stock up on mini canvas at Micheals whenever they are on sale because Sterling loves to paint so much!

John is really talented in the artistic dept, but has never painted a canvas. I gave him all the stuff for christmas…think I can make requests for colors he uses? 🙂 I can't wait to see yours! Maybe I'll be brave enough to try!

Oh there's nothing better than messy art projects with your little peeps! My son painted a big canvas when he was 2 and I'm planning to hang it in my guest room. Can't wait to see your painting!

Such a fun project! I actually went to Michael's myself yesterday and bought acrylic paints + canvases + brushes, and plan on creating a very amateur masterpiece this weekend to hang in our guest room. Can't wait to see how yours turns out!

I checked out Made by Girl's website and she does have such beautiful art. I am thinking of trying to do something at home too 🙂
