Dining Room Update {Rug}

Well, what a difference a rug makes!  This week the Pottery Barn rug I ordered arrived, and I couldn’t wait to see how it looked in the dining room I’ve been working on.

Let’s start from the beginning again . . .

After the addition of a mirror and drapes.
And now with the rug . . .
I also took the leaf out of the table to make it shorter.  I’m glad I ordered the 9×12 rug, it fits the room perfectly!
If you’ve been reading along, you know I’ve got some work ahead of me with fixing the drapes (need to line and shorten them- they are tucked under in the photo) as well as decide on a new chandelier.  For now, the front runner is below (PB Clarissa Glass Drop Rectangular Chandelier), but I’m still looking.  I don’t want a repeat of last time🙂

Those are my projects for the weekend- wish me luck on completing them!

  4. Gorgeous, Megan! I am planning similar floors to yours and had envisaged a jute rug under our dining table. These photos have proven to me that this is the right choice. Yay!!

PS: Love the new chandelier option – v classy.

  5. Love what you have done in the room, the rug has made a huge difference and ground and pulled it all together. I really like the drum shade style of chandelier you picked myself. Maybe inserting it via photo shop…

  6. Everything looks so beautiful! Your entire home is decorated perfectly! I love the Pottery Barn chandelier..gorgeous! I also love the one you blogged about with the drum shade…… Ballard Design catalog also has ones similar (perhaps a bit more plain) and they showed two of them placed over a long rectangular table spaced the appropriate Length apart and I think that could look so great for your dining room as well! 🙂

  7. What a difference a rug can make. I have been debating a rug for my dining room, and I think I may take the plunge!

  8. Ohhh I LOOOOVE that chandelier! Definitely a top contender! And the area rug really helps to anchor the room…great choice! 🙂

  9. Gorgeous! I love how it is all coming together. Check out Overstock for the chandelier. I know they have a dead-ringer for that PB chandelier (only it's round … hopefully they'll have the shape you want too!)

  10. Hi! Just found your site and love it!
I have a question….I saw on pinterest a Thankful Tree, however I can't find it on your site..Help!
    Thanks, Jo Ann

  11. Look'n like you may be starting to plan a menu next for a great dinner party. Your choices are really coming together nicely. Enjoy your weekend!

  12. Things are looking great in there, Megan! You're right, what a difference a rug makes! Oh and those curtains are beautiful too : ) Great job, the room is really coming together!

  13. Love everything. The chandelier is beautiful. However, it's only 20 inches long….I fear it's too "little" for your room. Measure twenty inches wide with two pieces of ribbon hung from the ceiling. The room looks so pretty!

  14. i am so against having a rug for the dining due to the spills and just general maintenance. (taking out the huge carpet from below the table and chairs and cleaning it sounds like a LOT of work) but seeing your picture, i think i have changed my mind and need to hunt for a cheaper version of a similar looking rug ….SIGH!

Glad you went with this chandy! cant wait to see the complete room. I think the mirror is the main contributor to the fab look! :)for some reason the curtains are not my fav in the room and i would get rid of the 2 additional chairs around the console. the console table is another fabulous add to the room's aura! i cant imagine how you maintain all of this in your beautiful home.

I am so eager to see any art pieces you added to your decor since I find that the biggest challenge to do. its been 4 yrs and i cant find 1 piece that we have liked as the perfect art piece. so our walls are all BARE except for some portraits of us.

  15. The rug and size are perfect, Megan. It's looking so pretty. I am also in love with that chandy!!! Have a great weekend.

  16. Loving the way the room is coming together! Good call on the larger rug! Makes the room feel nice and spacious! Love the look of the chandelier but the scale seems too small for that large room… it's only 20" x 7" ? Or is there a larger version?? I would definitely tape something out or make a mock shade with poster board so you can see the shape in the space.

    Have a wonderful weekend!!

  17. Your curtains in the dining room are my fave! 🙂 I have that fabric for a pillow in our mstr bedroom and just love it! 🙂 xx, AnaLisa

  18. BTW….. The Ballard Design Drum shade fixtures are able to be utilized by connecting into a recessed light seamlessly…..I think from the photo of your space it looks as though you have 2 recessed lights the appropriate width apart to do this? Also I noticed the clarissa chandeliers at Pottery Barn and I have seen two of those done over a table like yours and also 3! Which makes a really great statement….. Good luck with your dining room finish! I think choosing chandeliers is the most fun part!! 🙂 🙂

  19. Your dining room is beautiful, Megan! The rug is just perfect for your space. It looks made to be for that room. A gorgeous chandelier! Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  20. We have almost the exact same chandelier in our dining room and I definitely feel it was an oversight on my behalf when we built our house…I call it a bear cage :). I have thought about trying those magnetic chandelier droplets and chains to dress it up..they sell them at Ballard designs. I love the PB chandelier and they have a pretty good looking knock off on overstock!

  21. I know others are thinking this so I'm gonna say it…Your room has some great starting points, nice neutral palate, new furnishings, pretty curtains but it's lacking warmth…you need texture, patina, age….pieces that say something about you and your family. Personality! Originality! Otherwise your house will end up looking straight out of a pottery barn catalog… and trust me you don't want that. maybe a cool vintage chandelier? Just some suggestions, it seems like you are at the beg stages of finding your style and you are doing great so far.

  22. Just stumbled upon your blog through ILove Organizing. I have a similar style table from Ethan Allen. How long is your table with and without the leaves?

    1. Hi TJ, I responded to your earlier comment too- Those chairs are about 6 years old from Restoration Hardware. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
