New Sunglasses

My trusty old sunglasses bit the dust over the weekend.  I was running in the park with James in the stroller and it was so hot that my sweaty face couldn’t keep the glasses on my nose!  I put my glasses into the storage compartment on the jogging stroller- with my keys!- and my already scratched glasses are no longer wearable due to the new large scratch on the lens directly over my left eye.

I definitely need a replacement quickly, but don’t want to spend a lot of money!  And I always think sunglasses never look good on me, so I have a terrible time finding a pair I like.

My last pair were Oakley and looked something like this,

I had them over 2 years- pretty good huh??!

I like the classic Ray Ban Aviator, but I’m not sure they’d look this good on me.

Lots of brands make their own version of the aviator, and the Armani Exchange version is $65.
Is there a favorite style/brand of sunglasses you like?  How much do you typically spend on sunglasses? I hate it in the past when I’ve bought a cheapie $20 pair and they are LOPsided!  I have a gift certificate to Nordstrom, so I may stop in to try some on this week.  I need a replacement with all this bright sun we’re getting!

  1. I had a pair of Ray Bans, and my then 3-year-old son decided to pull them out of my purse in a Barnes and Noble. He apparently dropped them at some point, and nobody turned them in (imagine that). It made me sick since I had only had them a month, and they cost over $150! That was the last time I have spent over $30 for a pair of sunglasses. Since then I have lost, scratched and broken numerous pairs.

  2. Mine are Maiu Jim's and I love them. I have had them for over three years and they are great.Your are so cute that I agree with anonymous that maybe contacting them you might be able to get replacement lenses. If you get a chance I would love for you to enter my eco friendly giveaway.

  3. Well, in my 'former' life, lol, my fav are Oliver Peoples. No doubt. I can't afford the price tag now, so I bought them on Gilt Groupe a few weeks ago. I have their modified version of the aviator, and DEAR LORD I love those stinking glasses. The are lightweight, and the lenses are awesome. The shape is perfect. Gilt carries them here and there if you wanna be on the lookout longterm and get a cheap pair in the meantime. I also love the Tom Ford Whitney. I know, shoot me out of my misery. I did get some cheapie designer brands at TJ's lately too…go look and report back =) xoxo

  4. I think you could pull off the aviators! I especially like those Armani ones.

I'm in the market for a "nice" pair of shades, and am giving myself a $150 budget – simply because I'm tired of cheap ones breaking so quickly.
However, in the mean time I'm using my Ann Taylor ones and they rock.

  5. I bought these at solstice over the weekend:

I bought the gold ones that have some white on the sides. I LOVE THEM! I was looking for aviators but the lenses came too far down on my face I thought. These fit great and they are a little wider on the outside of the eyes which I like…a little extra sun protection never hurt.

  6. I love aviator styles. I have a pair from target and i've bought them twice (i broke the first pair). I never spend more than $30 on sunglasses because i always break them and i would hate myself if I broke a pair of really expensive sunglasses. I'd just rather invest in a bag or something else. but I definitely recommend aviators- they NEVER go out!

  7. I'd go with the classic Ray Ban Aviators. They are the best sunglasses I have ever owned – and they look good on everyone! Also just over $100 which isn't so bad. Another feature I also love is the case they come in – it's so flat & tiny I can fit it in even my smallest purse! Which means no losing them! xo

  8. I have a trusty pair of (I think) Ralph Lauren tortoiseshell sunglasses that I've had for 10 years. I bought them as prescription glasses, then had them turned into regular ones when I got Lasik. (Prescription glasses are expensive, yo. I wasn't about to throw them out). Now, well, they're kind of a part of me!

  9. I love the style of the first pair. I also would like to be able to pull off aviator style, but they don't look good on me. I like big ones, like Jackie O style… And my father-in-law is an eye doctor, so I get them for cheap 🙂

  10. I love my aviators. I have had the same style by various brands including Ray Ban, Prada & Tom Ford. However, my favorite aviators are from SEE Eyewear and they come with a lifetime warranty. $30 will replace them no questions asked.

  11. I've had cheap and not so cheap sunglasses and I always go back to the not so cheap. I've had a pair of versace sunglasses for 6years and I wore them probably nonstop for 4+years. My hubby surprised me with http://www.solsticesunglasses.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-solstice_us-Site/default/Search-Show?brnd=Marc%20by%20Marc%20Jacobs

last year before we went to mexico and I love them for an oversized pair. But I recently bought these avaiators http://www.solsticesunglasses.com/RB-3025/104301,default,pd.html?start=5&cgid=root&prefn1=brand&prefv1=Ray%20Ban

and I love them too! I have gotten a lot of compliments on the color (gold with rose color lenses)!

  12. I have the Ray Ban aviators and adore them- I think they look good one everyone so totally think you could pull them off!

  13. Sunglasses are like a pair of jeans. When you find one that fits great, go for it. The most I've spent is $400 for a pair of Chanel sunglasses, but I've had them for over a year and definitely take good care of them.

  14. I always lose sunglasses, so I buy cheapie pairs and keep them all over…my purse, the car, backyard, etc. And almost all of mine are aviators from Forever 21 and Target. I also get a giant oversized pair for by the pool.

and I'm sure you are adorable in sunglasses!!!!! text me pics when you're trying on and i'll tell you 🙂

  15. I have the Ray Ban Aviators and love them…light weight and they go with everything!

  16. Anon- I hadn't even considered trying to replace my Oakley's! Thanks! I'm loving reading all these comments about sunglasses- I've been going crazy these last few days w/o mine!

  17. I am a Ray Ban Aviator girl as well. They seem to dress up and dress down really well. I LOVE that we are talking about sunglasses since that means summa-time!

  18. I really like the Armani Exchange pair. You are very right–you get what you pay for. I bought a pair of "D&G" on Canal Street in NYC back in December…they lasted for awhile, but my purse ended up busting them up.

I did find a cute pair of Dana Buchman shades at Kohls on clearance. I think they were $10 or $15 with my coupon. Love!

I like big, Jackie O. style sunglasses. 🙂

  19. I just got a cute silver pair at NY & Co for $5. It was cheaper than H&M and just as much as gas station ones. They seemed nice to me, marked down from $16, and I love them! I'm not one to pay a lot for sunnies as I tend to lose them a lot.

  20. I can so relate; love the expensive shades, but I am tough on my sunglasses. I always like to check out Marshalls for sunglasses. A few years back I made this discovery and got an amazing pair of Guess sunglasses for so cheap and last summer I managed to pick up my Ray Ban Aviators for $50. LOVE.

  21. I used to have the Rayban aviators and loved them…you can usually get them at Costco for about $60. Since losing those I usually wear Cole Haan's that I pick up at TJ Maxx that are budget friendly…usually $20-30. Definitely stop by the Nordstrom Rack store–last time I was there they had a nice selection.

  22. I bought a pair of Fossil aviators while on vacation in Nashville in March, they were $65.00…I love them!

  23. I have a hard time buying sunnies too – my head is too small (which no one apparently notices until they see how ridiculous sunglasses and/or hats look on my head). Just "invested" in a great pair of raybans…good luck with your search!

  24. Love sunglasses! My two most recent pairs have both been Elizabeth and James, luv 'em. I also have a pair of Guccis, Urban Outfitters, and Marc Jacobs that I like too. I guess I have too many?

  25. Unfort. for me my sunglasses must be prescription… I now have a BEBE pair that were $200.00… perscription lenses are expensive! But my old pair of RX glasses lasted me 3 years and were Guess… loved them too! I have discovered that when I spend that much on glasses (not by choice) that they get treated like gold and will last me 3 years because I take care of them properly. They don't get tossed around, and I always know where they are. I have two littles ones at home also. Good luck! And yes, you could get a replacement lense =) Even if the company can't, and eye place should be able to find something that would work.

  26. I love aviators and have worn many, many varieties from many, many places. I have found super cute avaiator knock-offs at Target, of course, but also American Eagle. Just got a pair a few weeks ago and I LOVE them!! Super sturdy, not flimsy and I get compliments on them all the time….LOVE. Oh and I always have great luck at AE finding cute, unique jewelry. Just got a super preppy looking navy/khaki striped watchband there….LOVE. Good luck and adore your blog!

  27. I need a new pair too! My current ones are Coach. It is trial and error, but if you know of a pair you love and fit…there is a vendor on Ebay that offers tons of high end for less and is very reliable. I refuse to pay full price!

  28. Since I'm blind as a bat, I wear contacts during the day at work and take them out & wear my glasses at night. I wear my prescription glasses and prescription sunglasses non stop on weekends. Since my prescription glasses are so expensive, I only wear cheapie non-prescription sunnies when I have my contacts in. I treat my prescription glasses like gold, take care of them and they last me a long time.

I get my cheapie sunnies at Forever 21, Kohls, Marshalls, Ross and TJ Maxx. I could NEVER spend over $20-$30.00 for non-prescription sunnies!

  29. I have worn ray bans for the past year and I'm never going back 🙂 I just love the aviator glasses. Now I just need a pilot.

  30. Definitely try sending the glasses back for repair. My husband did this with his Maui Jim's after our dog chewed them. Not only did they completely repair the glasses (looked like a new pair) at not cost, they included a treat for our dog.

  31. For running I would recommend getting a pair of Oakleys. They are way more comfortable than regular sunglasses and definitely won't go anywhere. For everyday I love Rayban and Maui Jim.

  32. Here my opinion on sunglasses (I have 3 kids) I run to Nordstrom's juniors department and get a super cute $10 pair of sunglasses (no name brand but cute glasses for cheap)!

My husbands swears by polarized sunglasses. He loves Maui Jim's sunglasses and he finds them at Costco for a great price ( but expensive too me)!

  33. I don't generally spend much on sunglasses. Like $15 has been my max lately. I know, cheap cheap. In my defense I get tired of them & they always end up scratched. I bought some from AVON a couple of years ago for $5 & they are by far my favorite sunglasses EVER!!!!
