Moving the Thermostat

A couple of weeks ago, I showed you the wall in our home that divides the kitchen and living room which contained the annoyingly-placed thermostat and ceiling fan remote.   I really wanted to put a piece of art there, but those two things were in the way.  The remote was easy enough to remove by simply unscrewing it from the wall and placing in a nearby kitchen drawer. image I was told that we could buy a wireless thermostat and place it on a completely different wall, but the quote for the wireless model and installation was $634!  Thankfully, our builder determined that he could move the existing thermostat to the side of the current wall, for $80, the cost of additional wires because our current wiring was too short. He unscrewed the thermostat from the wall and I held my breath while he cut into the sheetrock. DSC_0337 He then reattached the thermostat to the end of the wall where it is totally inconspicuous!  DSC_0477 Now, we finally have some art on the wall!  And you don’t even notice the thermostat anymore! DSC_0430 DSC_0432 (p.s. Did you notice I switched out the breakfast room benches for chairs?  (go back to the top to see the benches) I like it better, but now what do do with the benches??  And our dining table is missing some chairs . . . )  Note to self: we could have avoided this whole thermostat issue from the beginning had I known to be mindful of that!  Lots of people have the same issue with their light switches.  I saw Emily A. Clark provide a creative solution for decorating around those problems on her blog recently.  Great idea Emily! Also, I recently shared a few easy (if I’m doing them, they better be simple!) fabric DIY projects at A Well Dressed Home.   If you haven’t visited Emily’s blog before, you will love it- she has a design style that I really admire. image **********

  1. that is awesome! such a simple idea to move it and enjoy that space!!

for the benches, id use one at the foot of my bed in lieu of the traditional sette' or tufted cushion, and the other one in my foyer to put bags and coats on, or in my closet to sit on and lace up my shoes.

  2. I noticed the chairs right away! I like them much better. Keep the benches! Now that we have playdates and kiddos over all of the time the benches are great. . . you might want to return to them someday. Cute under a window with pillows on them?

  3. The artwork looks great on that wall!! I noticed the chairs too. Like them much better. As you know, I've been known to move chairs around. Be forwarned…it creates a snowball effect! I would keep the benches, maybe use one under the art? With a couple pillows.

  4. Love your kitchen drapes. Do you mind sharing where you got them or did you make them like the ones in your office–love those too by the way. On the hunt for patterned drapes and not having much luck in the stores, starting to think they will have to be made……

  5. I noticed the chairs and I have to say they look great at your kitchen table. Keep the benches. I have a bench at our kitchen table and it is great for little ones. I've also used mine in the family room for extra seating during a bridal shower.

  6. I love the new chairs! It looks great. I think it fits in with your style more than the benches. I know you're thrilled to have that thermostat moved. The picture is so pretty.

  7. I like the chairs at the breakfast table…the upholstery is softer. I just saw great looking gray tufted dining chairs on the world market site for $100 each. If you want to move your dining chairs back to the dining room, the WM would be good options for the BR.

And benches…maybe one at end of your bed and another in the upstairs hallway? You like how I talk about your house like I've been there?

and great job moving the thermastat…wall looks great!

  8. Looks great. I should post a photo of our thermostat wall. I ended up putting up photo ledges and used a 10×13 to sit in front of it. I like your idea better and just move it!
BTW – definitely love the chairs!

  9. The chairs look great. I always wonder why the place those thermostats in such oddball places! Your art looks great on that wall.

  10. SO inspiring! We have a very ugly thermostat situation next to not one but TWO light switch plates, its a mess and its in the middle of my living room! Been bothering me for a while now, but your great job is inspiring me to just deal with it already! Thanks!

  11. I love the art work! And the chairs look really good in there. Maybe sell the benches? I *think* I've seen chairs very similar to those at World Market that are $99 each and you can usually find a coupon or wait for a sale to get them cheaper.

  12. Love the painting – I would love something like that in my bedroom – would you mind tell where you got it?

  13. Looks beautiful! Love the painting, the wall color and the new chairs. A much softer look.

I love to know the paint color…what did you use?

    Thanks!

  14. Regarding the benches, do you have some outdoor space where you could use them? They would look great alone or with a table.

  15. Look at you! Finding a problem and going after it 🙂 I wouldn't have thought to move the thermostat but it makes a WORLD of difference over there in prime picture real estate world ; ) Love it!!

And I'm with Courtney- love the chairs and keep the benches, maybe for under a window somewhere? Or in an entryway or hall way? You'll find the spot!! xo

  16. So funny we think alike!! I love the new spot for the therama!
The picture is much prettier and i love the chairs. Well, I love your whole house.
OK I have to say $80, it most likely cost him $5 if that in supplies, he took you for a little ride. My hubs moves things around all the time for us and has a cable guy friend so I know a little, crazy.
    Enjoy your weekend!
    XOXO
