New Coffee Table

Since the addition of the new curtains to our living room, our big ole chunky ottoman just feels too big, bulky and dark for the look I’m after.  I initially chose this particular ottoman for baby safety reasons, but now I’m not so sure that there isn’t a better option available.  image image Here are a few that have caught my eye recently. Williams Sonoma Bryce Coffee Table ($550) I’m thinking of going round this time since our couch is so square.  I’m kind of in love with this one. I love the thick, dark wood paired with the shiny silver legs in an x-shape.  If you know of a similar, less expensive version, I’d love to know about it! image I can’t find the link for this one, but perhaps I could find a similar one and have it upholstered and add the nailhead trim?  image Or maybe a pair of x-benches?  Restoration Hardware $325 (on sale- ha!) – for one! image I’m especially fond of this version from Wisteria ($259) image But the Ballard Designs seats ($269- x- bench; Courbe Ottoman– $239) are great because you can choose from a variety of colors! image image This West Elm storage bench ($325) is pretty cool.   But which color??  Probably the grey. image The Crate & Barrel Collette Bench ($599)– always a classic. image I also like what A Thoughtful Place found for her living room.  K Mart ($129- but Courtney scored it for $99!)  Lucky dog! 🙂 image And here is a more modern version of what we have now.  Hines Square Ottoman by Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams.  And by the way Mitch and Bob, could you please list your prices on your website?? image  I’m undecided.  I’m going to put a design board together to see what I think looks best and continue looking around some more.  I’m considering changing the side tables, possibly the lamps, and adding a new accent chair or chairs and table to complete the living room.  Should I just pull the trigger on #1?? Have a Great Weekend!

  1. I am with the your other readers. The Crate and Barrel table is very nice and would serve as a stylish, baby safe option for your room, not to mention, it doesn't take up as much floor space. The Kamrt one is surprisinly cute too.

  2. Most of your selections are pretty good! But I think a big, round and light colored coffee table (beige or white) will suit the space and makes it looks brighter and airier. For practicality, choose one with faux leather/ real leather fabric.

Great blog, by the way. I am your new follower and I will be linking you. Hope you don't mind. 🙂

  3. Pull the trigger! Great price and they have quality stuff. The open legs on the table will make the room feel more open. 38" diameter, what is your ottoman now? But wait, I thought you were going to re-upholster that ottoman 🙂

  4. I'm with you on the round…we have a very similar sectional and were told round is the only way to go…though we still have the rectangular table. Anyway…round will open up the space and still allow for function situations (I know..what are those??) 🙂

  5. I really like the Williams Sonoma and the Crate & Barrell. That rug in the WS picture looks like something you could sink your feet into – how divine!

  6. Love round! Especially since your sectional has the chaise. Round would be great for James as well, no sharp edges. However, take into account that he is entering the toddler stage, and might make good use of a wooden table (think train track). Wouldn't want mom getting frustrated after spending a ton of $$$, to find railroad tracks down the middle!

  7. If you're moving away from leather and into fabric, I highly recommend something with a slipcover that can be washed at home.

Your son hasn't begun to explore markers yet, right? Or found your ink pens? Hasn't tried drinking orange soda from a cup yet? I have an 8 year old son.

Love my PB ottomans with their washable slipcovers!

  8. I can't believe the one that came from K-Mart! So pretty. 🙂 I am definitely impressed! I can't do upholstered stuff like that because even though I don't allow the kids to have snacks and drinks (other than water) outside of the kitchen…they still manage to bring their grubby fingerprints with them wherever they go. 😉

  9. In Houston…Interior Fabrics has THE BEST prices on custom upholstery and they do have ottomans of all shapes and sizes. {not paid by them…just an extremely pleased and loyal customer!} Actually one of my next purchases is going to be an ottoman from them.

  10. I kinda love your square ottoman, although I totally get you feeling it's too dark and bulky, but before dropped that much money on something I was unsure of, I think I would consider recovering what I have…You could probably do it with a drop cloth pretty inexpensively just to test and see if lightening the color of what you have is all you need…

  11. The ottoman is 1750 in leather. It is on page 9 of their catalogue. It is 42 square and my pick for your room…maybe in a fabric it would be less money

  12. The round is a great look for the angles of the couch. I love the benches, too. Thanks for the shout out, girlie!!! 🙂

  13. You should reupholster your current square leather one with the linen fabric & nail head trim. That way you are both cost effective, safe for the baby, and better for the environment! With a colorful round or oval tray on top, it could be the perfect solution!

  14. I love the first one, but why change what you have? I think its so pretty!! And the side tables!?! Really?!? I've been trying to find those on the cheap. I love the storage shelfs!

  15. I actually love the one you have. It is really well made, baby safe and the perfect scale for your larger sectional. Maybe you could focus on accessorizing it differently….maybe add a light colored throw, a different tray and some books. I bet you could find some fun things at Home Goods and make your own "design on a dime." Or maybe shift it to one side and experiment with the arrangement.

  16. Love your choices! Have you tried looking at Allcoffeetables.com? They have all different brands and you can enter your criteria to get your selections. I know it is so hard decorating with kids! Mine are 4 1/2 and 7 and even though they aren't in that baby stage anymore, now they are wrestling around the room and knocking into things!

  17. I like the first round one. I had my eye on one just like it at my office (we're doing reno's and I was hoping they would want to get rid of it…I.e. give it to me to take home and redo, but alas they plan on using it). Good luck with your choice, but I do like the round 🙂 The only downside is that none of your options have storage so you'll have to have a tray on top for magazines, and all the other clutter that comes with family rooms!

  18. I love the round one! I think the mix of wood and metal is really nice! Its worth it to spend the money if it is of great quality and you know you will have it for a long time!

  19. I actually like the size of your current leather ottoman. What you could do to change it up is to slipcover it. I did that with a smaller one we have & love having the option of a lighter look for the warmer months & removing it for the colder times. I made mine very fitted, but there are so many ways to go. Just an idea!

  20. I think the first one is a great option! I like the idea of doing a round table to balance out the lines of the sectional. You've picked a lot of great options!

  21. I'm on the hunt for a new coffee table too, and am looking for a round one. My living room is all rectangles except for one big round clock so I think it would look nicer to have a round table as kind of a reflection of that, and to give it a relief from all the sharp angles. I think a round table would be gorgeous in your living room for the same reason. Plus no sharp corners for your little boy to run into. 🙂

  22. My couch is the exact same shape as yours except its a deep chocolate brown leather. I am having THE WORST time trying to find a coffee table. We have a rectangled glass top one currently but it is NOT working (much to the boyfriends surprise, he thinks it's fine).

Love the Hines Square but I need it in a different color so it doesnt look like someone threw up chocolate brown leather in my living room..ha 🙂 Great inspiration!

  23. We JUST took our big bulky ottoman out of our family room too. It was so great when our son was a starting to walk, but now it just takes up too much space. you will be so happy when you replace it! Love all of your options…

  24. Love the first one. The mix of wood and metal is my fave. But from experience, I would try and hold off or just make sure you have a table for your little guy to play on, draw on, you get the picture. I have found scratches and chipped markings, most likely from the remote controls, and recently spilled milk on my black solid wood table that has now become a greyish stain. I can't get rid of it. I am just shocked by the look of it.
