This & That | Memorial Weekend

I’m sitting here on the couch typing this up on Sunday night while Jordan is sleeping and James is over at a friend’s house.  That means lots of catching up on Southern Charm! I’m not immune to the pull of reality tv, but I’m late to this one.  I just started watching last season, so I’ve been catching up on the first few seasons lately.  I don’t even know why I like it so much, but I think Cameron is darling, Patricia is a hoot, Shep is the cutest (but ladies beware!), and poor Katherine. I wish she’d get it together for her and her kids’ sake! I think I’m supposed to just smile and say, “bless her heart.”  I read Patricia’s book, The Art of Southern Charm, and it was good!  Even though I’m no southern belle, I appreciated hearing about the etiquette and some behind-the-scenes about the show.  I’m curious about another book mentioned on the show- The Charleston Academy of Domestic Pursuits: A Handbook of Etiquette with Recipes.  It’s written by the woman that was seen on the show teaching Cameron and Katherine how to cook.

And speaking of tv, the new season of our beloved House of Cards is released tomorrow! So you know what I’ll be doing!  I can’t wait for the next Orange is The New Black too.  Totally hooked on both of those! What shows do you love?  We need some new recommendations that my husband and I can agree on!

Did you see that we solved our playroom seating dilemma with these chairs?!  It’s a solution the whole family is on board with, which feels good.  Considering my hubby has been spending quite a bit of time in them this weekend, I think they were a wise decision!
We also bought a little blow up pool for the backyard that we plan to use tomorrow (Monday).  It’s the perfect size for our little toddler! It’s blowing my mind how fast she’s growing and everything she’s into these days! I’m telling her “No” more often and now she’s my little parrot going around saying, “no, no, no!!!”  Just too cute!

We have been mostly taking it easy this weekend so it gave me a chance to wear these new white distressed jean shorts on sale for $35!  They are high waisted, which I’ve come to appreciate because they keep you all tucked in, but the sliced distressing makes them cool and casual. They look especially good with this yellow peplum tank (that comes in lots of colors).  The tank looks great with jeans too.The wedges are super comfortable and a dupe for a much more expensive designer version.  This pair are under $60 and come in 3 colors.

My son has recently become obsessed with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series.  I can see him reading these books all summer because he never wants to leave the house without them, even to restaurants!  I made the mistake of buying a box set of 4 hardcover books at Barnes & Noble and they were so expensive. Amazon has them much cheaper and all 10 paperbacks in a set for $36.  We went to Half Priced Books this weekend and got the set of 10 paperbacks for $30 and 20% off.  Even though he already has the first four, I figured it would still be cheaper to buy that set.  I love that he loves to read!  We’ve been reading to him everyday since he was a little baby and he’s a great reader now!
I thought the little bear pancakes at Empire Cafe were so cute I had to snap a pic.  Jordan loved them!
For my brother’s birthday dinner, I was torn between these two cute maxi dresses.  You wouldn’t believe it, but they are both from Target and only $29 with buy one, get one 1/2 off!  The stripe one is obviously more colorful and more slim fitting with side slits, but the blue and white stripe dress is a fun seersucker pattern and so flowy. It was probably a little roomy on my petite frame a bit, but I still wore it!  And with both dresses in size XS, they hit right at the floor when I had on wedges (I’m 5’1).
With these hot temps here lately, I was randomly craving a coffee frappuccino on Sunday! Man, are those things good and addictive!  After I ordered the tall, I remembered you can get a mini instead, which is usually enough to satisfy my craving.

After 20 DAYS!!!, one of our hydrangea wilted.  But isn’t that amazing that the rest of them are still going strong?! It will be 3 weeks on Monday!  You can read my tips for how to keep your hydrangeas thriving for weeks here.  I wouldn’t even have believed it if I didn’t see it for myself!  My hydrangeas typically only lasted a few days in the past.
This little red drop waist dress with detailed embroidery will be cute for Memorial Day.  It’s junior sizing, which runs a small and I had to wear a thin bra to keep it from pulling in the chest, otherwise, it fit well.

I finally relinquished control of the remote just in the nick of time before my husband gouged his eyes out with toothpicks (he hates reality shows), so I of course turned my attention to the Memorial Day sales.

ANN TAYLOR | 40% off, code SUMMER
ANTHROPOLOGIE | extra 40% off fresh cuts
BANANA REPUBLIC | 40% off, code BRSUMMER
GAP |  40% off
GIGINY | Up to 40% off sitewide
HENRI BENDEL | 20 – 30% off
JCREW | 30% off, code SWEET
LOFT |  40% off everything with code VACAY & 50% off summer styles.  These dresses caught my eye and I put the size I’ll be ordering. I prefer to order petite if they have it since I find that Loft runs so big now.

NORDSTROM | The Half-Yearly Sale is going on through next weekend and you can see my favorite picks and personal recommendations here.

I want to order this cozy soft cardigan that everyone raves about but it only comes in two sizes and I’m afraid even the Small/Medium would swallow me.  You taller girls should definitely take advantage of the sale price.  Do any of you shorter girls have it?
Back in March when I did my swimsuit try-on and review, y’all liked this one and this one and both are on sale now, but sizes are limited.  I have another swimsuit try-on coming up for you later in the week (bikinis!) so stay tuned!
Okay, guys!  That should do it for this round of This & That!

  1. Hi Megan! I just wanted to drop a line and let you know how much I enjoy reading your blog!! Your kids are the cutest! That pool looks amazing, my little girl would just love it, I must keep an eye out for one 🙂

    1. I asked him and he hasn’t heard of them so we’ll have to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation! He’ll be reading all summer!

  2. I bought that cardigan for my husband’s grandmother and it looked great on her since she’s tall, but I’m 5’4 and it was way too long for me. I have the circle cardigan instead and wear it every morning.

  3. Thanks for the tip on the set of books! Brock loves reading too and I had not given thought to a series yet.
Awesome idea for the summer 🙂
With your blog who needs to do any further research? ????

  4. If you’re a Southern Charm fan, then you’ll probably like Below Deck as well. The new Southern Charm series is interesting, too. My husband and I have binge-watched Last Man Standing on Netflix and love it. For a sci-fi drama that you both might like, try Orphan Black. It’s getting ready to start its final season on BBC America, but it’s got some great writing and the actress who plays clones of herself is pretty awesome- you won’t be able to tell that it is the same lady! My son loves the Wimpy Kid series as well. James might also be interested in the Battle Bugs series or the Who Was biography series. Hope y’all got to use your pool this weekend- it’s been raining in Cypress all day!

  5. I have the cardigan and while it is long (I’m 5’3″), it’s sooooo cozy to wear and when you are sitting down it’s like you have a little bit of a blanket, too. I just tie the bottoms up if I am working on things around the house so it doesn’t get in the way!

  6. Oh–have you watched Bloodline? My husband and I agree on very little when it comes to tv, but we both love House of Cards, OITNB, and Bloodline. Season 3 just came out!
