Our Snowy Christmas Tree

Did you get your holiday shopping started yesterday? Maybe even done for those overachievers out there! 😉 Those sales were bananas and my fingers are tired from clicking around on my computer, but nothing a strong cup of coffee this morning can’t fix!
Are you ready to turn the page to some Christmas holiday decor?!  Over the Thanksgiving break, we’ve been making our way around our home spreading holiday cheer throughout.  Thank God I have a helper in James or I’d be dead!  I’ve been sharing bits on InstaStories and love watching them too. It’s been easier for me to post to one social media channel instead of two, so I’ve been kinda MIA on Snapchat recently.  What are you watching?

When you have kids, it’s interesting to see which parent’s traits they inherit and, happy for me, James shares my love of decorating.  He definitely doesn’t get that from Dad! It was James who insisted we put a tree in the dining room this year with “red and white” and we got to it late on Friday night with festive music playing and all.  Today, I’m showing you our Christmas tree that takes center stage in the curve of our staircase.

This tall beauty is a few years old from Hobby Lobby and is pre-lit with white lights, but didn’t come flocked. I added the flocking with this White Snow Flocking Powder, the same powder I used on this tree upstairs.  The flock comes with instructions to lightly spray the tree with water, then sift the flock onto the tree while lightly spraying it with water as it falls onto the branches.  Then, spray a light coat of water again to lock it in place.  It’s really a two-person job because who can shake flock through a sifter and spray at the same time- not me!

Most of the flocking stayed in place, but some fell off and as we hung ornaments, we also lost some. If you want a super flocked tree where the branches are totally covered in flock, you’d probably have to flock your tree upside down and then right side up.  I wanted our tree lightly flocked as if snow fell onto the branches and I think that’s the look we achieved.
As for the color scheme of the tree, I went with blues and metallics, being inspired by the gorgeous Sugar Paper holiday line.
My very favorite ornaments this year are the glass icicles.  I loved them so much that I just bought another set of 24 and I’m waiting for them to arrive.  They are hand-crafted and come in various lengths (7, 9, and 11 inches) and are so gorgeous in person.  I can’t wait to add more!
These gift boxes with gold trim make for pretty decor under the tree and after the holiday is over, they’ll be great storage boxes.
I have a love/hate relationship with hanging garland on our stairs, but this year went with an all natural route and it wasn’t too bad.  Just super messy!  I used green velcro strips to affix the real garland to the the banister and then wove the eucalyptus branches in.  I used fishing wire to tie the branches together where needed to tame it down.
A double strand of ribbon tied in a bow finished it off.
The garland from Trader Joe’s came with instructions to spritz it regularly to keep it thriving, but I will say the eucalyptus started drying out immediately.  I photographed these three days later and you can see how they look at that point.
I’m crazy for how our flocked tree came out and the blues and metallics in it AND I’m crazy for the natural garland with pretty ribbon, but I’m actually not crazy about the two paired together! Maybe I shouldn’t even mention that, but I wanted to share my true thoughts with you.
I feel like the natural garland would look better next to a more natural, unflocked tree with woodsy and organic-type ornaments OR the tree would look better with a flocked garland or some other type of adornment on the stairs or none.  Maybe I’ll add more metallic ribbon to the garland??
I know it’s going to be on my mind until I change it, so you may see an updated version soon! But after all that time, effort and energy, I’m leaving it for now and wanted to at least show you how it looks at this stage.  Do you ever second guess your decor?
Our wing chair came downstairs to make room for the Winter Wonderland, but I like the chair so much here, I may leave it! Maybe it’s because I dressed it up with the most luxe velvet leopard pillow and faux fur trimmed throw (similar here).  This cozy spot is begging for mama to sit down and relax after all that decorating!  I can’t wait to show you the little bits of holiday decor we added to Jordan’s nursery next!
And sure looks like we could use some updated family photos!  Those were taken when James was barely a year old and he’s almost 7!  Ha!

If you want more details on the flocking, I did take some pics along the way that I could share in a future post, so let me know!

  1. Very pretty Megan. We used to have glass icicles for our tree and loved them. Sadly over the years many broke. Need to order some more. I love how they catch the light.
The garland is very pretty, but I can see why you are a little unsure of the pairing. It is a bit more "organic". Maybe you could just add in a bit of glam (bring in some of the pretty blues with beaded garland or additional ribbon, or I have even seen some really pretty florals in that color this year, peacock feathers are pretty too and have those colors as well). Whatever you chose, it will look great. I am just impressed with all you've accomplished with Jordan at her age!! I know James must be a tremendous help, and I am sure he is proud of his "work".

  2. I just LOVE your tree! My grandmother always did a blue tree and I've want to carry on that tradition, but have never quite figured out how to make it look contemporary/chic.

  3. Love your tree and the garland, both are so pretty and your stairs are the star of the show for sure.

  4. I love your decor! I find the blue so soothing. My tree is flocked (I bought it that way) and I used red and gold ornaments, but I feel like the red is screaming at me and the gold doesn't show as well on the flocked tree. I'm leaving it that way this, but looking for another combo next year. Maybe blue is the way to go 🙂

  5. The glass icicles are gorgeous!!!!!! I second guess my d̩cor all the time. Move things around frequently. I know what you mean about decorating the stairs/railing РI always struggle with this and decided to skip it this year. Your home is lovely. Happy holidays!
