The Best Coffee Shops in Houston

I’ve been wanting to write this post for a long time, and after such a positive response from the NYC Food Tour post, it prompted me to finally get it done! My hubby and I aren’t big drinkers, but we love a good cup of coffee and Houston hosts a number of great coffee shops to sit back, relax and enjoy the brew.  We’ll go as a family or as a quickie day date when it’s been too inconvenient or hard to line up a sitter for an evening out.

This post is also in collaboration with Nordstrom #homeawayfromhome, specifically their terrific menswear department, so I’ve interspersed details about my hubby’s outfits and I have to say, doesn’t he clean up nice?!  I clearly shop enough for myself at Nordstrom, but I feel good adding things for him to my cart too.  Makes it so easy that I can accomplish all that at Nordstrom, and I’ll all about efficiency. #twobirds Those button-downs are a staple for casual days at the office, but his Under Armour gear is what he prefers to wear on weekends.  Since Houston is so hot most of the time, he swears that those shirts help keep him cooler.  I’ll never get him to part with his Wranglers, but then again, why would I want to, he looks so cute in those! 😉

As for the coffee shops, I’m going to focus on four of our faves that you must try if you live in, or get the opportunity to visit, Houston.  If you want restaurant recommendations next, let me know! The coffee shops on our list are Common Bond, Catalina Coffee, Tout Suite, and The Honeymoon.

Common Bond, located near the corner of Westheimer and Montrose is a coffee (and sweets lovers’) dream!  It’s light and bright and airy inside with floor to ceiling windows and an outside covered patio.  Seating is tight, but there’s a good number, including at the pretty marble coffee bar.

It’s so hard to decide which of their fresh baked goods to try, but my husband is partial to their huge croissants.

I happen to think they have one of the best chocolate chip cookies in town.

On Washington Ave., as you approach downtown, Catalina Coffee is one of those ‘don’t blink or you’ll miss it’ small coffee shops with exceptional coffee and a variety of loose leaf teas.  They offer pastries as well, but the coffee is the star.

This place is only open until 7pm, but it’s a great place to relax and unwind, read or browse Pinterest.

They don’t have a patio, per se, but they do have a couple tables on the outside sidewalk.

My husband introduced me to Tout Suite last year and I’ve been hooked ever since.  This is the largest of the bunch, located downtown, with tons of open seating and a delicious menu of breakfast dishes, soups and sandwiches.  They also offer craft beer, wine and cocktails!

Because they have delicious lunches, Tout Suite is where I might hunker down for an afternoon of work with my laptop.  You can always find a spot to sit and then enjoy your coffee.

The Honeymoon Cafe & Bar is a New Orleans inspired coffee shop and bar located in the heart of downtown Houston on Main Street.  The owner also owns Boomtown, another great coffee spot in the Heights.

Their brunch is particularly delicious.

And don’t get me wrong, we still swing by Starbuck’s quite frequently too- there’s one on nearly every corner in Houston so it’s easy to pop in.

I conducted a very scientific poll, asking my girlfriends for their Houston coffee shop recommendations and got more good ones for ya!

Do you have a favorite coffee shop to add to our list?

  1. I live in Houston but I have yet to try Tout Suite, Catalina Coffee and Common Bond but I have been to Honeymoon and I absolutely loved it! One of my other favorites is Southside Espresso on Westheimer next to Uchi. If you haven't been there yet, you should check it out. It's really small but their coffee and sweets are delicious.

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. I'm not a coffee drinker (gasp!!), but I live in Pearland and I may have to try a couple of these out for the breakfast/lunch options and I love a good chocolate chip cookie so I need to try Common Grounds also.

I would love your restaurant recommendations also. We love hole in the wall burger joints and just about anywhere that we can sit outside and eat. We go down to Kemah or Galveston about 2-3 times a month to eat since its only about 30 minutes from our house.

Thanks for all the yummy recommendations today!!

  3. Interesting for a coffee lover like me that is planning several trips in my country and in foreign countries is always nice have great suggestion for these kind of locals, plus that chocolate cookie seems absolutely delicious…I loved every single photos of this post:D
