Help! What Should I Pack for New York?

So the consensus is in from last week that the two dresses I was considering taking to New York for the Better Homes & Gardens event aren’t really going to cut it.  While a few of you gave the blue dress a thumbs up, many other people said it wasn’t very figure flattering and the embroidered rust and white dress (while pretty) is probably too Springy for NY this time of year.  I’m actually happy to hear that because I’ve been dying to get into some of my Fall clothes and haven’t really been able to do that here.
For the actual event next Thursday, I wanted to take that opportunity to get out of my day-to-day Mom clothes and workout outfits and dress up in a fancy dress.  And my fun roomie and I will also be going to a show and doing a food tour #nowyourespeakingmylanguage! So I need to pack for that too.
Since I didn’t have time to go shopping at the store, I over ordered online because I knew not everything would fit and sometimes it’s hard to know how something will fit and feel once you actually try it on.  If you follow me on Snapchat or InstaStories @honeywerehome, you’ve seen me trying on some of these dresses and I promised you I’d link everything here, so here goes!  I warn you now, this post is long! I’d love to hear which is your fave, since I’m still torn and can’t keep everything! #Iwish

Whatever I keep has to be more than a “one-event” dress too.  I want to be able to rewear possibly for date night, hubby’s work party events, or upcoming holiday parties.

Let’s start with one of my faves!  This sassy open weave little black dress.  The XS fit surprisingly well and even though the middle is sheer, it doesn’t feel like you’re showing too much skin.  I’m also still able to wear my strapless bra with it and you can’t see it.  I probably wouldn’t want to wear all black on Thursday during the day, but maybe out at night.  I ordered this similar one in navy from Bloomingdale’s, but I got an email saying it wasn’t available so they were cancelling that order and giving me a 20% discount code for my next order, which I appreciated.  It’s back in stock in all sizes now, so not sure why I didn’t get it.  Same thing happened with this black & white dress.

I’m also CRAZY for this black/white/blush lace fit and flare dress.  I already took it to Nordstrom to take in (just a little) the black overlay on the skirt.  It was just a hair too wide, but otherwise fits perfectly. This could be a good option for Thursday, right?

Next up is this navy short sleeve fit and flare dress with a cool neoprene coating.  This dress in XS was way too small up top, I couldn’t even zip it all the way up in the back!  Otherwise, I love the shape and espeically the color.

This black metallic plaid dress looked better on the model than me.  On her, the asymmetric hem was more pronounced.  Maybe it was a tad loose on me in XS, but otherwise very comfortable and would be great for dinner on the town.

The pink crocheted dress is very pretty but my chest is too big for it, at least in this size, and it didn’t look balanced.

Now this faux leather patchwork skirt I’m also in love with!  It’s absolutely darling in person and the colors are perfect for Fall.  It’s all black in the back though.  It’s also on sale 40% off at Bloomingdale’s!  The only problem is I’m wearing size 2 and it’s too big – I had to cinch it in the back to get it to fit in these pics.
The black top is actually a bodysuit and also comfortable.  The arms were super tight going on, but once I got it all the way on, it felt fine.  The back is also scoop style, so it shows some skin, but not so much that you can’t wear a bra with it.

And I tried the skirt on with a cold shoulder top too, because I dig that style, but think it’s a little much with the patchwork.  Top might be better with a pair of jeans and heels or booties.

There must be some hippie chic trapped somewhere inside me because I’m always drawn to these shift dress styles in fun patterns.  This one has a slight bell sleeve and was cute on, but it doesn’t look that good in the picture.

I like this one below by Hinge better.  Hinge tends to run large, I’m in XXS below.  A long necklace would also dress it up.

I actually like this dress below too.  It’s a fun Fall print and color, but still tank style so definitely I could wear it in Houston. It’s one of those skirts you want to twirl around in because it has movement!

Here’s a perfect example of not being able to judge a dress online.  The feel of this fabric is divine!  It says 100% polyester, but it feels like silk. Also, it looked more purple online, but in person it’s more on the blue side. I really like this one!

What do y’all think of this dress?  I liked it initially, but the more I look at it, the more the fabric reminds me of a deck of cards and I don’t want to be the Joker! Online, it looked more like berry/light navy blue and in person it’s more berry/black.
Hmmm, this print shift dress looked better online, doesn’t seem to be doing much for me.  What do you think? It’s on sale 40% off
And one more dress that I really thought was quite perfect.  I wish you could see it in person and I hope the video on snap was good.  The collar and neckline are so gorgeous, as is the color.  I felt very sophisticated and feminine in this dress, but wonder if the size 2 might be just a tiny bit big/long on me.  On the model it’s above the knee, but I don’t mind it longer.  To show off the collar, it would be better to wear your hair up.  The model had the collar folded down, but I love it up.
Sorry, I know all of these pics aren’t the greatest, but this was the last I snapped before running out the door to James’ baseball game, so they were super rushed!
And I still have this jumpsuit (XS) that my friend on Instagram pointed out I could bring!  I had to alter the length, but I’m so glad I did- I almost returned it!
A little bit of leopard never hurt anyone!  This sleeveless tie blouse is lined can be worn tucked in or worn out and the tie tied up or worn long.  It’s also on sale. I’m wearing it with my favorite black skinny jeans.

Did you get the “get these pants” pants?  The ones that are like dressy leggings, with pockets and belt loops, but professional enough to wear to work?  Not to mention beyond comfy? They also good look with this top tucked in.  And they’re 40% off now.

Another night out look could be this jeans and cold shoulder top with a pop of red in the heels.  I have these same heels in tan and wear them all the time!  The heel is a little chunkier, so easier to walk in than a stiletto.  They come in 9 colors and the light blue is also really pretty!

Finally, in my head, the outfit I’d be prancing around the streets of NYC sightseeing looks something like this:

But the part of me that wants to be comfy and not sweating my butt off will probably wear something like this:

Phew! That was a lot!  If you made it to the end, I’m proud of you! I’d love to hear what outfits you liked best/didn’t like.  Will help me narrow it down!  This weekend is gonna be busy! Jordan and I go on Sunday to try on wedding dresses with my soon-to-be sister-in-law!
I post everyday outfits on Instagram and Facebook and love connecting with you there!  If you want to shop my outfits without LikeToKnowIt, just go to the SHOP tab at the top of my blog and click on the picture for direct links to what I’m wearing.  #howeasyisthat?!

  1. Don't be afraid to wear all black- you're going to New York, the capital of all black all the time! Also the patchwork mini is very cute, but definitely a little much with the cold shoulder top. Have fun!

    1. I'm with you on the black dress. It's the best of the bunch and the most blend-into-New York style while being very unique. The lace fit and flare also is very cute and less typically NYC black. And the jumpsuit! YES!
The patterned dresses are pretty but they all look pretty casual for an event. The patchwork skirt is cute but very casual and yes, the cutout shoulders are too much going on.
I wouldn't count on wearing serious heels too much for your nights out unless you plan to take taxis/Ubers everywhere. NYC is all about walking. You don't want sore feet to ruin the fun.

  2. Ruffled dress hands down, it's gorgeous and the color is perfect for fall/holiday season. I LOVE your "prancing around" outfit! So creative! And those BOOTS!! The Jumpsuit and the Leopard Top with the "get these" black jeans are cute too… It's hard to choose!

  3. I love that white cold shoulder top outfit near the bottom of the post.
I also loved the A line ruffle dress on you and the print fit and flare. You look pretty in all of them really!

  4. Hi Megan!

First I need to say how much I love your blog! I really love that you are on snapchat and I CANNOT get over how adorable and hilarious James is! He seems like such an incredible little boy!

Ok, back on track-you MUST keep that first dress! (the black lace one) It honestly looks like it was made for you to wear!!! I also like the black/white/blush fit and flare. The red ruffle dress is also a MUST KEEP. It looks amazing on you! I also really like the Hinge dress-the neckline to me is more flattering on you than the one above it. I do have to disagree with you on the "deck of cards" dress-I didn't think it looked like that from the pictures at all and I love how it looks on you!

Good luck packing and have a blast!!!

  5. I really like the jumpsuit and the blue fit and flair dress on you! Both are so cute and would work so well for your upcoming trip! I know you are going to have a blast! Good luck packing!

    1. I'm getting so excited! I'm going to be sad to leave Jordan and James for sure, but I know they're in good hands. These opportunities don't come around often so I want to soak it up!

  6. The second to last dress you posted, striped shift, did not link! I love that and it would be PERFECT for the day time in NYC. Fall colors but summer temperature appropriate. Perfect for me in Fl. I also love the jump suit day or night! Love the blog and have been eating a protein pancake every morning 🙂

  7. Everything looks so gorgeous on you! My absolute two favorite dresses are the all black lace one (dress #1) – WOWSA! And I also love the wine colored ruffle a-line dress. Have a great trip!!

  8. Burgundy ruffled dress FOR SURE. It is so flattering on you. And the jumpsuit is also a great option. If you're going out at night, that first black dress is great! No to all of the bohemian shift style dresses (and especially not with those black booties!!). The fit and flare style dress is PERFECT for your body type!

  9. I agree with person above…the all black one is made for you! I also love the second one, the twirly tank dress and the pink one that you said was too tight on top. Thanks for answering my size question about the burgundy dress on snap chat last night. I'm going to order the size 2 and just have it altered if needed because I just love it. …may have to order that all black one, too. Ha! I'm so excited for you and Cassie!

  10. Love the black one. Have you tried Rent the Runway??? They're great. Not a fan of the patchwork skirt with the top. Also love the black and white/blush lace one!

    1. I have! I used RTR for a school Gala and also for a trip to Dallas. I forgot about it though, thanks for the reminder. I had good luck with it and love seeing all the reviews with women wearing the clothes! Helps so much!

  11. The black/white/blush dress is outstanding! It's different and looks great on you. I would also take the leather skirt, the jumpsuit and the skinny jeans with the leopard top. Ditch the burgandy dress. It looks frumpy on your gorgeous figure.

  12. Wowza, I love all these outfits and with your figure, it's hard for anything to look bad. If I had to choose my faves: the first black lace dress=perfection! That Navy short sleeved dress, although you say it didn't fit – it is ABSOLUTE gorgeousness. The jumpsuit has to be packed because…. well, you don't need a reason for it. and the prancing around outfit is a must!

  13. The wine colored dress hands down is the winner! Fits like a glove in all the right places and looks great with your coloring. The black is pretty but I fell like it's bowing in the back a bit.

  14. Lifelong New Yorker here, first black lace dress and the black jumpsuit are the best. Black metallic plaid is also great. The print tank dress would be good for daytime. Don't consider the black/white and the peach, totally wrong for NYC in the fall. Burgundy is too holiday party-ish for a dress up evening in the city.

My advice for anyone going to NYC, bring the most comfortable shoes you own as you will be walking a lot on hard surfaces. Have the ability to layer a bit to account for weather. It is 90F today but in the next two weeks it may go into the 50's at night. Make sure you have sunblock if you are planning to be outdoors at all, most visitors get sunburned.

Daytime, dark leggings and tunics are great, again, wear the most comfortable shoes you have.

I hope you have a wonderful trip.

  15. So I hate to say this but I feel like a lot of the dresses you showed were really safe. Ever since seeing you in the cute bomber jacket and pink skirt, I think you should really push yourself for fun and funky – especially for NYC. If you're able to take that outfit, I think it'd be awesome. If you have to take a dress from what you showed, then I would pick the first dress (black). Hope you and Cassie have tons of fun!

  16. I like the black metallic dress and the pink crochet dresses the best. I also like that black jumpsuit. It's very sexy. I think the issue with the rest of the dresses is really the fit. You're very petite and these dresses look way too big on you like they're regular size dresses and not petite. They also don't look like your style. When you purchase a petite dress, it fits you better because the proportions are better and the length is a little bit shorter. When you wear these dresses in a regular size, they are too long and it looks like you're in your Mom's dresses. It's just too much fabric for a petite person. You have a nice shape and you just need to stick with petite sizes and stick with things that go in at the waist; those are more figure flattering for your shape. That was kind of what happened with that blue dress from the other day with the bell sleeves. It was way too much fabric, looked way too big and too long and it just swallowed you up. Personally, I always think the petite clothing is a lot cuter:) You are just too short/petite to be wearing regular sizes. The black netallic dress was beautiful on you and the pink crocheted dress was stunning. I hope that helps. Have a great time.

    1. Fit is definitely king. Usually 2P fit me the best if they have it available, otherwise for a perfect fit I'm best friends with the alterations people! Hope you're having a great weekend!

  17. First time posting. The first black dress looks great on you but I don't feel like it's conservative enough to wear to your husband's work events. I like the print dress with pretty back that you said reminded you of poker for daytime. It doesn't remind me of cards ;). I also like the leopard shirt for either day or night. Black jumpsuit looks great on you and I think it's perfect for new York!

    1. That's a good point, wouldn't want to wear that one to a work party. Interesting to hear your take on that "cards" dress. Sounds like the jumpsuit is definitely coming with.

  18. My girlfriend just came back from NYC. Be sure to check the weather before departing. She wore a saucy autumn outfit that was too heavy for the 85 degree weather.

BTW, you posted the recipe for the tomato & strawberry salad on Snapchat but it went by too quickly to get the info. Would you mind posting it somewhere that it can be copied? Thanks

  19. Love the 1st black dress. That is head turner. I really like the burgundy ruffle dress and I love love the Free People hippie dress. Love your blog and know that whatever you pick will look great.

  20. This is sort of off-topic but you really look so great! You've talked a lot about your diet but not much about exercise. Are you exercising? What are you doing/how often?

    1. Thank you! So, for this 40-Day Challenge, for the first half I was working out 2x a week with my trainer and also running a few times a week or adding another weight training day. For the last half, I've been so busy that I've only been doing the 2x a week with my trainer. We workout for an hour and do upper body one day, lower body the other and we're starting to incorporate active rests into our workouts. The weight training/cardio/food is all important but I see the biggest results when I watch my diet super closely and get enough protein.
