Brunetteish

Gah! Why does hair have to be such a drama??!?!  It’s been almost a week since I screwed up my hair got lowlights and I still haven’t gotten used to it yet.  It has already faded/washed out some with lots of shampooing (even liquid dish soap!), but until I can get it ‘fixed’ I’m just living with it.  And I can’t even look at my profile picture on the top right of my blog or I’ll cry!  #passthetissues On the bright side, my roots are no longer a problem! And my hair looks more like Jordan’s, which makes me smile.
When you change your hair color, suddenly clothing and makeup colors look different on you too. You can’t go wrong with plain white, so that’s what I chose to wear when sharing this new hair color.

top XS | jeans (25 & hemmed to ankle length) | bag | heels | sunglasses
bracelet (similar for lesswatch | similar necklace (on sale $21)

It’s also been super rainy and humid here, so the curls I started the day with were gone within 5 minutes of walking outside.  Oh well, throw on some sunnies and a smile and just fake it ’til you make it, right?!

At least my outfit is cute. This top will be in heavy rotation and I love the longer length, perfect for peeking out underneath a jacket.  It’s lightweight too, so wrapping up with a scarf won’t make me too hot later.  The deep-v is also a flattering neckline.  I was worried my bra would show through but, this nude one didn’t.
Oh hello, under $40 crossbody convertible strap bag! It comes in black also and the tassel is super cute. The description on this one says grey, but it’s very light, almost cream to me.  These jeans come much longer, but I had mine hemmed to ankle length and now I can wear them with everything from flats to heels to booties and I don’t need to roll them.
Peplum tops are so flattering, and like the style I’m wearing, they don’t have to be super fitted at the waist to make your middle look more defined.  I’m especially crazy for this patchwork denim one!
One more hair pic before I go!  Notice I’m too shy to turn my head because there’s this one super dark streak on the other side I haven’t been able to wash out yet!  I’m embarrassed!  Insert elephant covering eyes emoji! 😉  Please be nice and just nod sympathetically.
Has this happened to you??

  1. I think this color looks nice on you! It would be a great fall/winter option! I am a hairstylist so I understand how it's hard to go from a blonde to brunette. Just curious, are you going back to get your hair "fixed" free of charge? Or did you just make another appointment to go back to blonde because you decided you didn't like the darker color?

    1. My hair stylist lives out of town and comes in town every 5-6 weeks, so I'll see her when she comes back and I pay her. I'm still waiting to see what it looks like then, maybe it will grow on me in the meantime.

  2. This has happened to me, and once you get through the initial shock (1-2 months) you will like it. I hated mine and now I like it. I also think your color looks great on you and is perfect for fall!!!

  3. So, so chic on you, especially heading into fall. I really love it. It has so much dimension. That said, we moved last year, and I haven't been able to get my highlights right since then. They've come out almost gray! After feeling over processed, I ended up adding a toner/glaze but that feels too dark. I've been through this up/down twice lately! So I can completely sympathize. I'm not sure if this is universally true, but I also notice that my hair color and texture is different when I breastfeeding/pregnant.

  4. I wouldn't call this brunette at all. More like dark blonde with low lights. You're just used to being platinum so it feels like a huge difference, but it's not. I have naturally dirty blonde hair so I bounce around between bright to dark, ombre and everything in between.

  5. Your hair looks amazing. You could add some blonde balyage highlights to lighten it up a bit (like your inspiration pic) but this shade looks great!

  6. I think your hair looks great! (…and it's still blonde, albeit a different shade than before) I understand the shock, but you look wonderful!

  7. While a drastic change, it does look good on you. It has definitely faded since the first pic on snapchat!! Katie and I thought she'd done the low lights in black it was so dark. This looks more natural than the blonde blonde. IMHO, it makes you look younger! I have the opposite problem, my hair will not stay dark. I have lowlights added in fall and winter for some contrast because mine gets almost white blonde in the summer, but they fade quickly.

  8. Um, I LOVE it! It looks so expensive and natural! I think it is super flattering to your skin tone, too. I know it takes some getting used to (I went from platinum to brunette w/ highlights when my son was about a year old) but not needing so much maintenance will make it so worth it…think of all the money and time you'll have to spend on other fun things! 🙂 I would recommend getting using purple shampoo to help keep it pretty and ashy.

  9. Megan, you look gorgeous (as always) and especially so with this hair color! I've had exactly the same experience as you describe and have come to realize that I obsessed about it when most other people hardly noticed. This is a lovely and natural-looking look for you, so try to give it a little more time before you consider switching back.

  10. Totally different look but, for what it's worth, it looks great! Go back to the blonder look if that will make you feel more like you. But, I'd say to give this another week to see how you're feeling then. Sometimes a change looks "off" but, if given the chance, it becomes the new "normal". You're a lucky one that you look great with your more true blonde as well as this dark blonde/light brown.

  11. I think the colour is perfect for the fall time. It's a bit richer with this depth of colour. Give it some time to get used to. I thought I'd share. I have Alopecia, this is an autoimmune disease where your body attacks the hair follicle. After the birth of our second child I lost all of my hair within 3 months! My loss is the most extreme, with 100% gone. I'm not telling this story so other women can feel sorry for me. I've adapted and have amazing hair, I just buy it now! But what I want other women to know is to have fun with your hair/styles. Life is short and hair will grow back, have fun changing it up! Hugs?

    1. Yep, probably good for fall! I've never heard of your hair story, that had to be very, very difficult to deal with. Big hugs to you too!

  12. I'm sorry you didn't get the color you want; that's frustrating- but I love it and think it looks gorgeous on you! Don't give up on it yet. Mine is similar and I get highlights every 8 months or so; I definitely go too long between but it's not super noticeable so very low-maintenance.

  13. I dont know, from a distance I like the color, but I see what you mean about that really dark chunk it stands out, its like the dark low lights aren't meshing well with the light blonde, maybe give it time to settle and lighten up? I remember you posting a brunette pic from way back and dark hair was gorgeous on you. I think the thing that stands out to me in these pictures is that you are not happy and uncomfortable with the change, if that's the case then do what feels right for you. PS. love that bag

  14. Oh I know the feeling!! I did the opposite, went from a natural brunette to more blondish… Too blonde!! Didn't feel like myself at all! The low lights looks really good on you though, but sometimes it doesn't feel right even if it looks good! Xoxo

  15. I love the new color! Definitely agree with the comments that it's more flattering and still a darker blonde. You look so classy. I think you should keep it for a few more weeks before you add anymore lighter highlights. It takes awhile to adjust to a big change. I used to be a hairstylist so I know this. I hope you mind me giving my opinion. I think too many women make the mistake of over lightening their hair thinking it is younger looking. This color is much more natural looking and more age appropriate.

  16. Pay attention to the comments above! Sometimes we can't be objective about ourselves. lol Especially if you've identified for so long as a bright blonde. This color looks younger, hipper, richer, and more up to date. Like the others, I urge you to live with it for a while.

  17. Oh I love this color for you. It looks amazing. Change is hard to get used to, but I love it.

  18. Um…I actually love it. 🙂 You're beautiful either way, but this feels really sophisticated. I understand though, every few years I seem to go brunette and hate it. Ha. Mid-toned is what really looks best on me but being really blonde is super fun!

  19. If it feels way too dark, maybe you could just add back a few highlights to break up the dark streak?! I think it looks beautiful, and will be so great with all the fall colored clothes/tones. Much more natural, too!

  20. Its always so hard to get used to even subtle changes in hair color. From the previous post pic with the inspiration photo it looked like her ends were lighter and had more of an ombre effect. Yours didnt keep as much blonde at the ends, but it doesnt look bad just different than what you are used to! If it bothers you, maybe go the same route but add more blonde at the bottom. Good luck!

  21. Has it happened to me? I went lighter once and the salon turned my light brown hair a lovely Lucille Ball red. I wanted to shave my head.

With that shared….you look great in the new color. It's very flattering. I like it so much I am saving it to Pinterest for a future color. Think of this as a time to try new makeup, new clothes and be a different you.

  22. Meg's, I LOVE your hair! I think it looks really flattering on you . . And I'm not just saying that . . . But if you FEEL better lighter go for it . . . .at least you tried! It sounded like a good idea! Haha!

  23. I have to say I'm in the camp of liking your current color the best. It looks much more natural. Not that your lighter color is not good….its just this one is super good. I vote for living with it for a while and seeing if you can get used to it. it is always a shock to the system when we try out a new cut or color.

  24. Oh my goodness, Megan! I'll be totally honest – I LOVE IT! It actually makes your blonde look more natural. May hairdresser adds lowlights too and it's crazy but it makes my blonde look brighter and gives my hair more depth (I have a lot of fine hair so I'll take any depth I can get!).

    You look perfect!!!

    xx,
    Sam

  25. You may not notice because you miss the perfect blond color but I am seeing lots of depth with blond and various shades of brunette which actually adds a lot of interest to your hair. Mine is like that except with coppers and reds instead of the bond. I get tons of complementstuff and I think yours looks good too but get how frustrating it is with hair when it doesn't meet your expectation. If you live with it for a while maybe you'll see what I do.

  26. You look great, almost more mature, only problem with this colour I think is that when it fades it makes you look very grey. A lady here at work has the same colour and hers has faded quite a bit so it looks very dull. But I think you look stunning as always xx

  27. Your hair looks great, but I completely understand where you are coming from. A few years ago I chopped my long locks off for a really short hair do and it killed me! For a lot of people their hair is no big deal, but I never got used to it and immediately began growing it back out. I've said all that to say this… now looking back I feel as if I didn't embrace my short hair enough. I got many compliments on it, but for whatever reason I had a hard time liking myself with it. I love short hair cuts and wish I would have given it a chance. Your hair looks great and is perfect for Fall!

    1. That's hard too, going from long to short. It's a shock to the system. Reading everyone's comments here and on insta is making want to give it a chance.

  28. I like this color on you but I understand yo perfectly infact I'm still thinking if on September is better renew my bronde or return to my natural color (dark brown) is always a complicated story with my hair….

  29. I think your hair looks amazing! Change is difficult (especially when you're so used to seeing your own reflection in a certain way), but I think it looks really natural! Obviously, you look great either way and you have to do what makes you feel good, but just know that it looks great!

  30. I totally did something similar last year about this time! I was tired of getting highlights every 6 weeks, and have always liked the ombre look…so I asked my stylist to try that on me. I left feeling like I had basically paid her to give me more roots…lol. Most people couldn't tell much of a change, just looked like I hadn't had my hair done in a LONG time. I didn't feel like myself after keeping it for about a month so I went back to my normal highlights! This color does look great on you, but for sure do what makes you feel best! 🙂 At least you got it out of your system, right? I just felt like I would never know how it would look until I tried!

  31. Hi Megan –
I had the exact same problem TWICE in the last few years and something that helped was using a warm shampoo toner. For us blonde women, the "dark" hair is especially jarring if it's even a little ashy. Good luck!
    – Megan

  32. I agree with others who have said that this color is more flattering and makes you look younger. Your face looks so much more vibrant with this hair color–just ever so much more chic!
