One Room Challenge :: Week 3 Choosing the Perfect Chandelier (Size Matters!)

We’re halfway into the One Room Challenge now and our nursery is beginning to come together!  Last week, you saw the design inspiration board that the talented Sita Montgomery created from our discussions (so lovely!) and the built-in bookshelf with bench seat that still needs to be painted.
I’ve been doing lots of online sourcing and ordering, but there’s still lots to be done!  And only 3 weeks left! #yikes!
TO DO LIST
*Paint walls and ceiling
*Assemble furniture (crib, dresser, and glider)
*Order rug, mirror, art, lamp, and pouf
*Pillows are on the way (thanks Arianna!)
*Roman shades are on the way (thanks Melissa!)
*Choose bench seat fabric and build bench seat
*Choose bookshelf hardware and install
*Accessorize bookshelves

*Wait for baby to arrive!

One of the first things we decided on for the room is a gorgeous chandelier from Bellacor Lighting that would make a beautiful statement in the room, whether for a boy or girl.  I love the shape of the chandelier and the white acrylic beading that looks classic and dramatic at the same time.  Isn’t it amazing?!?!

Bellacor’s Semi-Annual Lighting Event is still going on until October 26th, so be sure to check it out.  If you aren’t familiar with Bellacor, aside from lighting, you can also find furniture, decor, kitchen, bath, bedding and outdoor pieces for your home on their site.  Big thanks to them for being a sponsor of the ORC!
I was anticipating the day our chandelier would arrive because I knew it would really set the tone and provide that wow factor for this neutral nursery.  The day I pulled up to our house and found the package waiting outside our door was a good mail day!
Inside, the parts of the chandelier were packaged super securely to avoid any damage.  And yes, after opening, all that styrofoam makes me immediately want to pull out the vacuum!

After realizing how many pieces the light came with, I got a little nervous about assembling it!

It’s kind of overwhelming to see the whole thing in a dozen small pieces and I was freaked out by all those string beads, but in reality, it only took a few minutes to string all of them.

I did have to call in the big guns to help me assemble the rest of the fixture while I conveniently ran to the store for chandelier lightbulbs.  Thankful that he’s willing to help me with these kinds of things, especially when football is on! 😉

We (he) hadn’t even put the entire piece together when I realized that it was entirely too large for our room!  #waaaaahhhhh!  The four-light chandelier is 18.125″ wide x 30.25″ high and we needed something about half that size for our 8 foot ceilings.  I mean it was seriously ridiculous!  I think I just had a pregnancy moment and didn’t measure the space and compare it to the size of the chandelier before ordering.  #duh!!!!!!
But, someone else in the family was having a ball with it!  If you want to purchase a perfectly mint condition, partially assembled chandelier that only hung on a 5-year-olds head briefly, let me know!  ðŸ™‚
In all seriousness, of premium importance when buying a chandelier for your room is size.  In other words, size matters!  We learned this the hard way, but I was lucky to see that the chandelier also comes in a mini that measures 12.5″ wide x 20.5″ high.  Phew! Crisis averted! Although I saw several other light fixtures that were gorgeous and would’ve worked in the room as well (here, here, here, and here), I really had my heart set on this one.

Had I been paying attention, I would’ve realized that Bellacor is smarty pants and has a Chandelier Buying Guide right on their website that is so helpful regarding sizing, installation, light bulbs, and more.  I wish I had looked at that the first time!  Below is a partial excerpt.
Chandelier Buying Guide- perfect resource for difficult questions about choosing the right chandelier for your home: sizing, style, installation, light bulbs, etc. So helpful!
I’ve ordered the mini chandelier and I’m still technically breaking the rules by only having about 6 feet of space between the floor at the bottom of the fixture (the Bellacor Buying Guide recommends 7), but I had my mom hold up a desk fan to the ceiling that is just about the same dimensions of the smaller chandelier to get a feel for how the new one would look in the room and I think it’s gonna work. #fingerscrossed!
I can’t wait to see the furniture all assembled – I plan to show you that next week!

  3. Totally something I would do…pregs or not. The chandy is gorgeous, so I'm glad it came in a more appropriate size! Hope you're having great success with that to-do list this week! ox
