How to Style Your Tank Dress for All Seasons & Finally, a Flattering HAT!

When I showed thisĀ Leith Ruched Body-Con tank dressĀ on Instagram recently, one of my friends commented that she just bought it, but wanted suggestions for how to style it for the cooler months. Ā I had some ideas for her and thought I’d share with the whole class. šŸ˜‰ Ā P.S. if you have a style question, I’d love to hear it and use it for a feature blog post. Ā Fashion is always more fun shared with friends! Ā Isn’t that why, when we buy something great, we immediately want to show our best friend?!

ThisĀ Leith Ruched Body-Con tank dressĀ is super cute and flattering with the ruched sides and criss-crossed front. It’s gotten over 100 positive reviews and also comes in black, jet black, grey, and red rio (sassy!) and is only $56! Ā I first bought it last Spring (pre-pregnancy obviously!) and wore it with a simple Gorjana necklace, hoop earrings, and nude wedges (similar on sale). Ā I thought I lost thatĀ necklace this week and was so bummed! Ā It’s one of those necklaces I like so much I almost reordered it! Ā Luckily, I found it mixed in with another necklace. Ā #mustbemorecareful!

The dress also comes in a long sleeve version that would be so cute with booties and a faux fur vest. But, since I have the tank one, I knew I could make it work through the winter with some layering and accessories.

Fast forward to earlier this Fall, when Houston was still pretty warm and I was about 18 weeks pregnant- the ruching on the sides helped the dress expand to fit my growing baby bump. Ā In our part of the world, we start itching to wear booties in September, and can try to get away with it, but our weather might not cooperate for longer sleeves. Ā Here, I added a statement necklace and grey peep-toe booties.
EARLY FALL
As the weather cools, you can add a lightweight cardigan or jean jacketĀ (similar)Ā for warmth or for going into restaurants that like to crank up the AC. I like the long pendant necklace with it too since the cardigan is also long.

FALL/WINTER
A look that can still be work appropriate is the dress with a classic white button-down underneath. Ā To keep the look office appropriate, I kept the sleeves long and buttoned up and a simple black heel would look amazing. Ā I was happy to see that the shirt didn’t look bumpy underneath the dress.
And the bump is growing! Ā I’m 21 weeks pregnant now and about 15 pounds heavier! Did you hear we’re having a GIRL?!?! I don’t think I’ll be able to wear this dress much longer, but right now I’m milking every last cent out of it!
Come winter, when it’s cold out, I love the look with tall knee-high boots and a hat. Ā I know hats can be tricky or you might feel self-conscious wearing one, but once you find one that fits your head and frames your face nicely, you’ll love it. Ā I wouldn’t have been able to wear a hat to work, but for a night out or on the weekend, it’s fun! Ā Why not?! Hats are also bonus for hiding roots in dire need of a touch up (like mine every 6 weeks- it grows too fast!) or Day 3 hair!
Of all the many hats I’ve tried on, this one seems to be one of the most face-flattering hats I’ve found. Ā It’s about 21 1/2″ circumference (I have some room still, so it could be a tad smaller for me), and the brim is 2 3/4″. Ā It’s a good price too at $42.
When you do wear a hat, it’s flattering to wear your hair over your ears so it still frames your face. Ā Even if I pulled my hair back in a low pony tail with a hat, I’ll usually pull a few pieces forward to soften the look so it doesn’t look too severe.

With this look, I did a more plum colored lip. Ā I mixed a couple shades and don’t remember which ones. :/ Ā I’ll pay more attention in the future if you’re interested in makeup. Let me know in the comments!Ā

WINTER
When it gets cold out, time to pull out the tightsĀ and scarf! Ā You could still wear a tall boot, but I also like the look of an ankle bootie. Ā This pair I’m wearing is actually super old from Target, most similar to these.

I’m crazy for a red lip (this one I have memorized –Ā MAC Brave RedĀ – because it’s my go-to, but see more of my favorite red lipsticks here), especially at the end of the year when I’m feeling all festive and to give your face a little spark of color. Ā The red goes especially well with the red in the scarf. Ā Hint: Don’t discriminate between genders when buying scarves – some of the men’s are similar dimensions to the women’s! Ā If you need a couple ideas for how to tie your scarf, go here.
I also rolled the sleeves haphazardly for this look so it would be a more playful and not so serious.
I only showed you one button-down shirt underneath this dress, but be creative with what you have in your closet! Ā For example, aĀ knit long sleeve shirt would work too and have a similar effect. Ā I liked it with this grey/navy striped one I have, but just didn’t get a chance to get it photographed. Ā It’s a more casual look, but still cute with booties!

    1. Hi Jaclyn! Sorry for the late response- I think mine is the dark grey charcoal heather, but they look so similar, so I'm not 100%. Mine is old and the tag doesn't say.

  1. I have this dress, but my panty lines are showing. Do you recommend a certain type to wear instead? Thanks!
