Spring Living Room

Now that we’re into February and I’m down to the last two of my Top 10 organization challenges, I’m itching to get back to decor and interiors and new ideas on that front.  Our living room has evolved over the years and right now it’s got some Spring touches happening that I wanted to share with y’all. This is the place we spend so much time, watching tv, having friends over, playing games and my son with all of his toys.  Even though we’ve cleaned and organized James’ playroom, he still likes to be down here with us most of the time.

I’m still pleased with our coffee/table ottoman and it just fits the space.  I had the ottoman at the end of our bed for awhile, but it was really too deep for that space.  Here in the living room, I keep a tray on the table for decoration and function- to hold the remote controls.  I often switch the tray out, but this mirrored tray is from Target.  It was a steal at $40.  The green ombre throw blanket breaks up the beige color between the couch and ottoman.

I’m all for real flowers, but for simplicity, typically keep two faux hydrangeas in this ginger jar that I spray painted black for contrast.  (It was white).  I wish our rug was still available.  It’s held up really well and is pretty soft as far as these kinds of rugs go.  It was from Crate & Barrel.
Other than the sectional (Pottery Barn Pearce) that I reviewed here, the biggest functional piece in our living room is the media cabinet.  We debated about having a fireplace instead, but practicality won out given we live in Houston and figured we’d get much more use out of the storage in the media cabinet.  I think we made the right decision, but every so often, I’d love to have that fireplace and mantel to decorate.
The media cabinet was built in when we built the house, so I can’t give you a source to buy one.  I would recommend the combination of open and behind the door shelving as well as the drawers.  We keep everything from games, puzzles, DVDs, art supplies, diapers (once upon a time) in the storage compartments.  A couple years ago, I painted the back wall Sherwin Williams Urbane Bronze.  The cabinet itself is Sherwin Williams Divine White.
I’m loving the layered look of the bamboo shades we hung, even though we still have regular blinds.  In retrospect, I would’ve gone with different windows/casings so the windows would’ve looked better with just the roman shades.  I had the drapes made with fabric I purchased (Windsor Smith Pelagos Fabric in Mist).  I’ve made drapes before and it’s no picnic, especially drapes this long.  I think they are 120 inches.
The greek key pillows I picked up at Homegoods and the colorful pillow is from Festive Home Decor.  The zebra pillow is from West Elm years ago.  The real fiddle leaf fig we had in here years ago didn’t fare so well.  I think they need lots more light that this little corner gets.  So, this faux fig is a good compromise. It’s not as tall as I’d hoped, but I still like it. I got mine at Overstock but the price seems to have gone up- looks like this is the same one from Walmart.
Styling the bookshelves is a fun way to showcase your books, photos and other decorative items. I’ve come to like more actual books on the shelves and since we have quite a few, am glad to have the space to store them.  I ended up mixing colors and just try to keep the heights about the same, then turn some on their side or pages facing for variety.
I still adore our elephant bookends from Homegoods.  And the framed photo of my son at 2 months old is one of my favorites.  I can’t believe he’ll be 5 next month!
Hope you have a great day!

  1. I love the bamboo shades and seeing them in the various rooms you have posted about has really made me want to purchase them for our house. We have regular blinds, but so many are damaged and it's time to replace them. I get so nervous stepping out my comfort zone on something like this!

    1. I still wish our windows were cased so we could remove the blinds and just have the shades. Maybe a future project. The shades really warm up the room with the texture they add.

    1. Thank you! I just moved that plant up to my office because our living room ceilings are tall and the office ceiling is shorter. I'll have to show you soon!

    1. Did you see my other comment- I moved our tree up to my office because I thought it looked to short in the living room. I like it much better now! Let me know what you think if you get it!

  2. Wow your son is two months old in that photo?? He had so much hair!!! I love love love your living room… in fact I'm pretty envious of your whole house (particularly your closet).

Your interiors/styling posts are my favourites! x

    1. Thank you Ella! My son was born with a full head of dark black hair! So crazy! And he never lost it, it just lightened up. I'm working on a closet clean out, so hope to share the final results next week. 🙂

  3. Love it all! It's all so inviting and cozy. I'm so glad to hear those are faux flowers (they look so real). I'm all for flowers, but let's be real.. they're gone after the photo shoot. I'm thinking about getting a faux fiddle fig…. scary thought though!

    1. I had a real fiddle leaf fig in my work office and it thrived- I think because it got so much natural sunlight and because we had professional plant caretakers who knew how much to water. The real one I bought for our house didn't last long. 🙁

  4. Great post and such a nicely decorated living room! Can I please know where the faux hydraengas are from? I have been looking for some faux flowers to put on my coffee table and it is so hard to find ones that look nice…

  5. Such a pretty and inviting room. It looks calm and relaxing, so that is perfect in my eyes. The entertainment center and that staircase are stunning.

  6. Your home is lovely Megan. How cute the photo of James at 2 months old! I can't believe he is going to be 5! Like Lauren I have watched him grow up. He is a wonderful little boy. My goodness, times goes so fast!

  7. Love you living room and spring touches! I went back to your post on the sectional and was wondering if you ever did something about your back pillows (squishing issue)??? Would love to here about that since I have the exact same issue.
    Thanks!

    1. No, but it's one of those things I think about constantly and haven't acted on. I will definitely post about it if I find a solution.

  8. I painted my entire house accessible beige and I love it. But I’m having a hard time finding a carpet color to match. I found something like your area rug color, how do you think that would look wall-to-wall against the color accessible beige?

    1. I think that would work, but it’s hard to know without being there in person. I wonder if you could get a large sample to see how it looks in your house.
