DIY Envelopes

If there’s one thing I feel more and more as the years go by, and as I raise my son and watch him grow, it’s that LOVE makes the world go round and so much sweeter.  As much as I enjoy keeping up with my girlfriends via text messages and all the funny notes we exchange back and forth, there’s still something special about receiving a handwritten note.  It’s a tangible expression that you care, that you went the extra mile to say, “I’m thinking of you.”  Don’t get me wrong- texts, emails and calls can convey the same sentiment, but it’s so nice to get something other than bills and junk mail.  Don’t you agree?I created colorful DIY envelopes to mail my notes in and they couldn’t be simpler to make.

I used scrapbook paper and heavy-weight gift wrap that I already had on hand.

To make the envelope, I opened a real one and then just traced the outline onto the paper I wanted to use for the envelope.  This template is easy to duplicate over and over, then you just fold and glue the edges together.  I was out of my glue stick, so I used double-sided tape.

To make the envelopes even prettier, I created a coordinating envelope liner with a different patterned paper.   Then, I embellished the back of the sealed envelope with washi tape.  I thought the recipient’s address would be difficult to read on the patterned paper, so I used a label to handwrite the address on. (This “friend” is fictional since I didn’t think my girls would appreciate me giving out their address;)
It took no time at all to create the envelopes, and not much more  time to draft the written sentiment inside.  Wouldn’t you like to receive one of these in the mail?  Because I used a regular envelope as my template, I knew these could be mailed with a standard stamp.
I’ll be back tomorrow with a Mother’s Day gift idea.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing. I especially love the way you layered the address label. I’ve wanted to use decorative paper, but wasn’t quite sure how to handle the address. I can’t wait to try this!

  2. Oh my goodness these are so gorgeous. And I completely agree…there is something really special about getting something in the mail! Very sentimental!

  3. I like to make cards on my computer with Print Shop, Make a matching or coordinating envelope to match the cards is that extra touch to make the card sending even more special. This is a great idea. Especially if you find an envelope that basically fits most cards made by using a standard paper folded in half. Sending cards out is a lost art these days with e cards, email, texting, facebook etc. It's fun to receive a pretty card in the mailbox instead of a bill. Great Post!!!! xo

  4. Those are so cute! I make cards all the time (have for years) but just recently started making the envelopes as well. A cute handmade envelope makes even a store-bought card feel and look extra special!
