Our Breakfast Room

A few changes in our breakfast room has given it a whole new look.  We spend a lot of time here eating meals, hanging out, and my son plays and does projects on the table.  It is often a mess, but I try to clean it like this at the end of each day.  I remember so well when we first moved in and didn’t have anything in this space for a long time, except a rug, then after about 3 months, decided on the table and benches.  Six months after that came the drapes (I picked out the fabric and had them sewn).  At some point we added the roman shade because we were being blinded by the late afternoon sun.

The benches are great for kids, but I often prefer to sit in a chair that has a back- much more comfortable.  Sometimes I put two chairs on the end of the table and have the benches on the sides, but moved them for now.  We bought 10 upholstered dining room chairs when we first moved in, so there are enough to have them in the dining room and also in here. I still have to remind my son to take off his shoes and not stand on the chairs but so far, so good in keeping them clean. The benches are currently backed up to the couch holding books and magazines.  I’m loving this extra storage!
But, I’m most excited about the new rug! We previously had a jute/sisal rug, but it just looked like too much beige in the room and I wanted something with more color and pattern and that would be easy to vacuum.  I think this busier pattern is helping hide dirt and spills- always a plus with a toddler.  I thought the tan in the rug looked creamier online, but now I think it’s better darker and won’t get as dirty looking.
I like the size of it for this space too (6’7 x 9’6).
I don’t think the barstools are very comfortable because they are super stiff, but my husband likes them, so . . . I guess it just depends on your preference.  It was challenging to find barstools in the height we needed because it seemed like most of them were either too short or too tall.
I love picking up grocery store flowers- daisies last forever if you change the water and cut the stems.

(I got mine at High Fashion Home for $15 a yard, but they told me when I bought it that I was buying their last of it and they wouldn’t be getting more.)

  1. I love your dining chairs! I've been searching for the perfect light colored chairs for a while now, but I've been too nervous to invest for fear of them being ruined immediately. Do you do anything to treat them or keep them looking nice and new without stains/dirt? xo

    1. I haven't treated them. I spot cleaned them with soap and water and sometimes put a towel down for my son to sit on if he's eating something messy.

  2. Looks beautiful! Love it! I have a 4 year old daughter and I've been reluctant to put a rug under the table bc she is super messy (sigh). What did the description of the rug say on Joss & Main? I wasn't sure what type of rug would be kid friendly. Thanks! -Kerri

  3. so pretty and welcoming! Did you have to drill that roman shade directly onto your door? I bought a similar shade and I need to attach it to a door that goes outside so I'm not sure how to drill into it!? Thanks for your help 🙂

  4. Again, AMAZING! I swear when we move into our forever home one day, I'm just going to come to this blog and look at each of your rooms. I love this breakfast room!

  5. It looks wonderful! I do love the pop of color that the rug gives the space. Isn't it fun shopping your own home for items like your chairs, vase, etc? BTW…Happy Birthday Friend! Hope it is a fabulous year!

  6. I've loved watching this room evolve…so pretty!! And I love the color and texture the rug and barstools bring!

  7. megan, i love the curtains and the rug. you have such a great eye. in the source list, you skipped the light fixture and i really like that. do you recall where that came from?

  8. Just love the rug! I tried the link you have posted but it's not there anymore. Can you please let me know the brand or the name of the rug. It would work perfectly in the playroom that I am trying to put together for my little princess.

  9. Do you know the manufacturer or specific name of the rug? It's no longer on the Joss & Main site. I would love to find it on sale elsewhere. Thanks!!
