You’ve seen these regular wooden stools everywhere I’m sure.
I recently transformed ours into this:
I originally bought the stools from Overstock or Amazon for our bar counter. But, they weren’t the right height and I never returned them, always planning someday for a makeover. They’ve moved around the house, most recently ending up in our upstairs hallway.
I always knew I wasn’t fond of the reddish-brown color as it clashes with our floors. After painting the doors grey, and adding some animal print rugs to my office, I figured a paint and fabric makeover would look good on the stools.
I pulled out my most favorite glossy black spray paint and gave them two good coats.
Laying the stools on their sides worked better than spraying them upright, because when I did that the first time, the spray paint started dripping down the legs. Uh-oh.
Then I removed the seat and stapled some batting and fabric to the seat, making sure to cut the excess fabric and wrap nice, neat corners. I love this fabric because it’s plush and soft.
Then, it was time to screw the seat back on.
I’m so happy with the result. Of course, now I want to exchange our current rug for a Moroccan runner.

Hi everyone! It’s Jennifer from The Chronicles of Home with another healthy recipe for you. I picked up a recipe card from my Whole Foods’ bakery counter a few weeks…
Last year, inspired by Martha Steward, I made these little pinecone elves, one for each member of our family. I made these based on Martha’s tutorial, with a few tweaks…
Hi guys! How was your Monday? I was a mess, totally exhausted from our girls’ trip that had me dancing and eating Taco Bueno until the wee hours of the…
Good morning friends! Today is a special day where I’m joining several of my blog friends for the Decked & Styled Holiday Tour and I’m extending a warm hello and…
How’s your week going friends? I’m just over here counting down the days ’til the 2017 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale like a kid at Christmas! It’s so close, opening this Thursday for cardholders. ??I got a friendly letter in the mail letting me know they upped my limit just in time for the sale- #thankyouverymuch! We’ll keep this little detail to ourselves and not bother the hubby with that tidbit of info! 😉 Are you excited?!?! Of course, I’ll be sharing my picks on Thursday and then a big ‘ole dressing room round up on Friday with fit tips and recommendations. Let me know what you have questions about and I’ll do my best investigative journalism for ya!
This swingy striped! cold shoulder dress is perfect for daytime or evenings out. Love the simplicity of it and the drapey fabric. Such a steal at right under $50! For a daytime look, you could wear it with the #10 sandals (they have lots of colors) & for evening, these black open toe heeled sandals would be great.
Show off your summer mani with this gorgeous, chic statement ring! I like to wear it on my first or middle finger on my right hand with a bold bracelet.
I’m sure you’ve heard me rave about this maxi dress before. Every time I wear it, I get tons of compliments and it’s really flattering and comfortable. It’s on sale under $40! I wear XS.
High waist leggings will be your BFF, I swear! They keep you all nice and tucked in and make you feel great while working out. Zella quality is always superb, and this pair comes in three colors with criss-cross detail at the calf. They run TTS, I wear size XS.
Although I normally wear a tank to workout, this Zella tee is my go-to when I want a t-shirt. The seams in the shirt are perfectly placed to help the illusion of a smaller waist and I like the cut of the sleeves that don’t irritate me when I’m working out.
My go-to tank, $11!!! I think I need to stock up on the other colors. It’s perfect for wearing alone or layering under cardigans or other tops. It fits TTS, XS here.
I have the older version of these sandals and they are really good! They come in tons of colors and the “beige leather” has a snakeskin pattern that goes with everything. Sam Edelman makes quality shoes that last, so I highly recommend them!
Hi friend! I hope you’re having a wonderful week! Wednesday means we’re on the downhill slide to the weekend and I’ll take it! JUST (THE BEST) SALES Every Wednesday, I…

Hi! I’m Megan, mom to a thoughtful teenager and spunky young girl. We call Houston home and recently moved into our dream home. I traded my lawyer hat to become a full-time blogger in 2010. My name ist Kerstin, I am from Germany, and I am as of this morning officially hooked on your blog. You … I don't even know where to start. Your family is lovely, your house is incredible, and your ideas are just so inspiring! I started reading your blog a few hours ago (I'm ill and my two guys are out of the house, so I have an excuse!) and have been intermittently getting up and cleaning little corners of my house and rearranging things, and then always coming back to your blog. And now I've started with your first blog post and am reading my way through everything from back to front.
I love it. Thank you for your great work! Keep it up, and all the best! Kerstin

Beautiful! And it's crazy to me how gray your doors read. I just used that same color on my office board and batten and it looks much more brown with gray undertones. http://www.lifeonvirginiastreet.com/2013/09/office-sneak-peak.html
It's safe to say I LOVE the color though and love just how versatile it is!
