Dining Room Pillows (Yellow or Brown?)

Hi friends! It’s good to be back from a little time off last week.  We are taking things one day at a time, and have had a lot of family togetherness, which feels really good.  I did some things around the house that I haven’t shown here yet, so I plan to put together more posts this week.  It will be good to clear my head and distract from the heavy-hearted things that I cannot control.  Thank you again so much for the prayers for my Dad- they really mean so much.
We’ve been eating more meals in the dining room lately and especially after finding these gorgeous, vibrant lamps from HomeGoods, I wanted to start layering and styling the space more.  The “buffet” which I think is meant to be a media stand, is just a stand-in until I find something better and much longer.  It was purchased years ago at Crate & Barrel.  I’d love to put sconces on either side of the mirror too.

As you can see, there’s not much going on and the room needs some fabric and pattern to tie into the drapes and bring the room together.  I had our drapes made from Dwell Studio Vintage Plumes Peacock fabric and then “no-sewed” the curtain liners using a flat sheet.  After a couple of years, I still adore the colors and pattern in the fabric.  I must like aqua and yellow together- it’s the same as my blog design!
Shopping Etsy, I found Festive Home Decor, who makes pillow covers in lots of different styles and shapes for reasonable prices.  Torn between a yellow and brown pattern, I bought both because I knew I could easily change them out and move them around the house.
The yellow pair are smaller, but look punchy and cheerful with the aqua lamps.

I was cleaning out the media room, aka playroom, so James could have more space to play, and needed to move the large woven urns out- so into the dining room they went.  I’m liking the effect- another layer of texture and height.

The brown are nice too.  I really like the groovy geometric pattern and the 20×20 is a good size.

Which pillows do you prefer in this room?  I shared another online source for pillow covers last week in case you missed it.
Have a great week!

  1. since I'm new to your blog, this is my first time seeing those curtains and I WANT THEM lol!
The brown pillow flows more, the yellow pops more. so it's up to what you are looking for! I like the pattern on the yellow more.

  2. I just ordered pillows from Festive Home Decor! I got grey pillows from her for our family room. I prefer the yellow! You could always switch them with the seasons (yellow in spring/summer and brown in fall/winter).

  3. I prefer the brown, I think they work well with those gorgeous curtains! I think the yellow steals the show a bit, if that makes sense? As if they are too vibrant and distract from the curtains while the brown have a great pattern and work more harmoniously with the curtains!
    :))

  4. I'm praying for you and your family. I think both options are great in the space…great selections. The brown will look great with a Fall vignette. Love the lamps too.

  5. Let me start by saying I love color and I am not afraid to use it, but I think I like your brown pillows better. It keeps the dining room a little classy without being to formal. The yellow ones seem to be competing with the aqua lamps for attention too. The aqua lamps are so fun and should get the attention they deserve! Hope this helps!

  6. I really like both of them. Sorry, I'm no help! I might be leaning towards the yellow, but the brown is so sophisticated. I absolutely love the fabric you used for the windows. It's such a pretty room and reminds me that I really need to start decorating my dining room before the holidays!

  7. I LOVE the yellow in there! And can you please come do my new apartment for me?! I want it to look exactly like your house, haha. I'm a fan of aqua and yellow together as well. It's very calm, but also fun.

  8. I LOVE the yellow pillows! They add a punch of whimsy. And can you please come style my entire apartment in Mississippi? I want it to look exactly like your house! I am a fan of aqua and yellow together; it has a calming effect but it's also fun.

  9. I think I prefer the brown. However, I agree with someone who said to keep the yellow for summer and then switch them out when fall arrives. I do like both, but I think the brown is a bit more classy for the space.

  10. Definitely the yellow…such a cheery pop of color with the lamps and really draw the eye in. Maybe yellow in summer and brown in fall/winter? That way you can use both LOL!

  11. I prefer the brown! They are sophisticated and seem to match the tone of the dining room more so than the yellow. But in thinking of your house, the yellow would be great in your living room!

  12. The yellow ones are gorgeous but the brown ones look better because the yellow draws too much attention and steals the spotlight from the lamps and the curtains!

  13. Brown has my vote. They let the lamps shine and are a pretty tone. You can add more pops with fresh flowers. Both sets are really darling, though. Such a beautiful room, Megan.

  14. I would do brown, the yellow is clashing with your curtains too much in the shot you have posted. The room itself is really beautiful – I love the clean sparse feel you have. I would like something similar in my dining room- my colors are griege and navy but I have too much going in there right now. Thanks for the inspiration!

  15. I love them both…and can't believe I'm going to say this…but I think I prefer the brown!? Love the basket in there!! I'd love to see some trim on those lampshades.

  16. Yellow for spring and summer, brown for fall and winter. 🙂 I really like them both, but I tend to lean more toward muted colors, so I'd be the brown girl.
    I LOVE the lamps.

  17. I like the brown – feels a little more chic and really lets those gorgeous lamps shine! Keeping your family in my prayers friend!

  18. I love the brown, but I also really like the idea of switching them out seasonally!

  19. I LOVE them both Megan! But I would have to go with brown for that space. The yellow pillows are so bright and fun, but almost too much color pop with the lamps. But really you can't go wrong in a room that beautiful! Funny you mentioned sconces. That's what I've been picking out this morning for my house! 🙂

  20. The brown is more sophisticated looking – but I love the idea that you can switch it out to yellow because that one works too for summer!

  21. What a beautiful room Megan! Both pillows look great….I think I am leaning toward the brown a little more but you can't go wrong with either. Keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers.

  22. Hi Megan,
I've been keeping your dad and your family in my prayers and hope you are feeling some comfort. Lots of people praying! I was thinking about you this afternoon and remembering how hard it is to keep things normal when someone you love is ill and you are working and taking care of young children and home etc. I'm praying for you to have strength and stamina and the peace that passes understanding.
Love the pillows. Your dining room is so beautiful.
    Blessings and comfort,
    XO

    1. Peggy, thank you so very much. You are right. There really is no normal around here at this point. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your prayers. Thank you!

  23. I love both! But when you put that amazing woven urn in the corner it made me like those beautiful brown coloured cushions best.
You have created a beautiful space!

  24. I can't believe you found 2 of that lamp! I loved that lamp but the Home Goods I live near only had 1, ugh! I have both of those pillow covers and they both are gorgeous! The yellow pulls the yellow out in your curtains and I think add some flair 🙂 but I love the brown too!

  25. I was not a fan of the brown in the first picture you posted but when I see them on the chairs, the choice is definitely the brown! I like the yellow but you already have a pop of a different color with the blue lamps. Definitely brown!

  26. I'm a colour nut and before I looked at the photos I thought 'yellow!', but surprisingly I think I prefer the brown in the space. They both look great though.

  27. Wow…that's tough! At first I LOVED the yellow, until I saw the brown. It looks very clean and classy. I would use the brown for sure!

  28. Gosh, your home really is gorgeous, Megan!

I can't choose so I'll say yellow for summer, brown for winter. 🙂

I've been sending you prayers about your dad. My family just buried my dad's urn this past Monday. He passed away almost three years ago, but my mom had kept his urn with her all this time because she wasn't ready to part with it. It was very sad, but closure for everyone, especially my little mom. We're keeping his memory alive in our hearts.

I wish you many, many more happy years with your father.

    1. Annie, my heart breaks for your family and especially your mom. I'm sure 3 years feels like just yesterday. How can we "get over" the loss of a parent? Just taking it one day at a time and savoring the little joys in our lives. My mother is having such a hard time right now. We are very close so I'm thankful that we are all supporting each other right now. Thank you for sharing – I tried to email you back privately, but your comment is "no reply." 🙂

    2. Thanks Megan, I really appreciate your kind words.

Family is EVERYTHING in those moments. I'm so glad your support system is strong. All you can do is give all the love you have to give. That's the answer.

      Annie XO

p.s. I changed my preferences so that I can now receive private emails. Thanks for the heads up!

  29. I am digging the yellow for sure! It's a nice splash of color, I do like the brown, but I feel like it dulls down the space too much. Love the curtains by the way, I am hunting down fabric in similar colors for my kitchen.

  30. The yellow! It compliments the blue vases nicely. Love the added layer of the woven urn too. Seems like it is meant to be there.

  31. I am very new to your blog. I really like both color. But, even more, I'm absolutely in love with the chairs! Would you share where you got them please? Thank you
