Outfit Planning for the Week

Hope you are relaxed from a great weekend!  I spend the better part of mine getting James’ book nook ready and photographing it for the Pottery Barn Kids & PBS Kids challenge that goes live on June 17.  The blogger who creates the winning space gets to giveaway a $500 gift card to one of her readers, so I hope that’s one of YOU! 🙂
Here’s a sneak peek I posted on Instagram and Twitter (@honeywerehome) on Saturday.  James is really enjoying it!  You can check out my Pinterest book nook inspiration board HERE.

Last night when I was picking out my clothes for the week, I realized I’d never shared that organizing tidbit with you and wondered if part of your Sunday night routine includes this too.  I only take about 15 minutes to choose the outfits and if I’m ambitious, I’ll include some accessories too.  I put everything together on a rack at the back of my closet.  This saves so much time in the morning where I could be standing in a closetful of clothes with “nothing to wear.”
I put the outfits in order from Monday to Friday, but may not necessarily end up wearing them that way.  I try to plan for business meetings or days when I need to be extra dressy or really comfortable.
I do this with my son’s clothes too.  He’s dressing himself these days though!
Sunday evenings are full of weekly preparations around here, including folding and putting away laundry while watching cooking shows (quirky habit), laying out clothes like above, getting James’ snacks ready for the week (chopping fruit and portioning out), and mapping out the week in general on my calendar.
Are you doing this on Sunday evening too or are you relaxing by the time Sunday night comes around?

  1. I WISH that I could say I was using my Sunday evenings like you….but we do so much around here on weekends that by Sunday p.m. I am ONE with my comfy couch!;) Great ideas though!! ~Kim

  2. Makes such a difference getting ready! I don't do this anymore but when I used to work out of the house I'd always pick my clothes out the night before. Now my girls call my paint-stained jeans and t-shirt my "work clothes." How time have changed… 🙂

  3. I LOVE this idea! I usually put out my clothes the night before…otherwise I end up in 5 different outfits before I leave the door. Doing it for the whole week is a great idea. I also spend some time doing food prep and catching up on laundry. I actually love Sundays because of how accomplished I feel by the end of the night!

    Great tips! Love your blog!

  4. Very organized indeed…I don't have the problem of a closet full of clothes and "nothing to wear" since I keep my closet very minimal with items I LOVE that way anything I grab from the hanger I know it's there because I love it and don't tire of wearing it. As for my 5 yr old – I always let her go to her closet grab the type of clothing I instruct her to wear (depending on weather) and she does that in a breeze since her clothing is also minimal.

Does this mean you are back in the work force? I remember a while back you mentioned you weren't working.

Sundays for me are church in the morning, lunch at home and also a "get ready for week" routine then have down time before bed time.

  5. This is a wonderful idea! My best friend in high school started this habit way back then, but I for some reason never caught on. I NEED to start doing this as I waste so much time in the morning trying to pick out an outfit. On Sunday evenings, my husband and I usually cook a big meal, eat dinner early and then try to get in bed early for some tv time or a movie. It's kind of our down time together!

  6. Girl you are so organized, I need to take a clue from you! Great idea about James clothes we spend so much time debating each morning what Sterling is going to wear, he is so picky. Maybe if I lay out 5 options he can just choose from that!

  7. You would freak if you saw a morning in our house. There are almost always tears over what someone (my 4-yr-old) is going to wear…I've even tried laying them out the night before, but inevitably, the next morning, the sleeves are too long, the legs are too tight (even on leggings!), etc. Pull my hair out!!! 🙂

  8. I am SO impressed that you do this for the whole week! I pick out my outfit the 3 days I work a week and I'm with ya, it saves me SO much time in the mornings!!

  9. Sundays have always been our church, clean out frig/pantry, meal plan, grocery shop, laundry days. I always loved having everything ready for the start of the week. When the girls were younger I would plan their outfits as well. Not sure they would appreciate mom doing it now that they are almost 20 and 23 however. LOL

  10. You rock. So organized. Riley does this . . . but now I find she likes to switch it up in the morning. I see my future already. Oh, boy. Love James' little socks on his clothes.

  11. This is a great idea and something I am definitely going to have to try. I actually used to do this when I was a kid, but stopped once college and, thereafter, adulthood happened. But I hate that rushed feeling in the morning when you don't know what to wear and then you end up selecting something that you feel uncomfortable in for the rest of the day! Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

  12. I can't believe how big James is getting! How cute he is sitting there in his tent reading. That is such a smart way to start your week. Love your organization and your cute clothes.

  13. I love that you plan your outfits for the week! I did that before I had kids, then stopped taking care of myself. Now, my closet is literally 2×3, so there's nowhere to lay out stuff!

  14. I used to do something similar to this. I made every outfit possible for my kids and then I knew when I really needed to do laundry. I need to get back to that.

  15. What a great idea! I wear a uniform every day, but I wear "civilian" clothes to and from work. I always wear jeans and a nice shirt, or khaki shorts, etc. I can't wait to have a job/lifestyle where I have more freedom in my clothing choices!!

  16. I do the same. I set out my weekly clothes, and do the week's cooking. I cook a crockpot dish, a soup and a casserole…the whole week is planned in Sundays. I especially love doing it in the fall and winter!

  17. Love this, I do this too but not for a week, I do it each evening, I have no kids to organise so it's easy to do it each night and fun. I live in the country and work in the city, so I commute, time is of the essence for me in the mornings. I might try doing two at a time though.
