Our Living Room Sectional (Pottery Barn Pearce) – A Review

Our sectional is from, the Pearce Chaise Sectional to be precise and I wanted to let you know the pros and cons in case you are considering this sofa for your home.  Overall, I would buy this couch again, but I wish the back cushions held their shape better.

This sectional comes in four pieces and can be configured so that the chaise is on the left or right. You have to be careful when placing your order so you get the correct piece.
The couch is big!  It’s long enough seat several people and also to take an afternoon nap.
For our space, the sectional fits our living room perfectly.  I love having the chaise lounge and you can typically find me there.  I claimed it from the very beginning.  Well, James and I claimed it.
The fabric on our sofa is Everyday suede in Light Wheat, but it also comes in a variety of different fabrics and colors.   Light Wheat is a neutral dark tan.  You can take swatches of their fabric home for free.  The suede is great because it is soft and wipes clean easily.  The only stain I haven’t been able to remove is an ink pen.  All spilled milk and other unidentified spots have disappeared with a scrub of soap and water.
My disappointment in this sofa is the back cushions.  They get so “mushed” and lose their shape- especially the ones that get the most use.   I continually have to refluff them.   The cushion covers do unzip, so I guess I could purchase a new insert- I haven’t looked into that, but might consider it. For now, I’ve added another pillow insert into the one cushion that goes where I sit.
Be mindful that with a sectional like this (with the chaise), you can’t have a very large coffee table in the middle.  There are about 70 inches inside, but you need to have room to walk around the coffee table, so the widest coffee table you can reasonably have is about 40 inches.
Balancing Home has the Pearce in Oat.
If you have any questions about this sofa, let me know and I’ll answer in the comments.

  1. I have a (very expensive) Flexsteel leather sofa that has similar loose back cushions. After about a year, the cushions were squooshed beyond recognition. Ugh! For the price, you'd think they would last longer. Like you, I placed a bed pillow in the zippered cushion where I sit the most. Last year, I gave up the fight and took the back cushions to a local upholstery shop. The cushions came back BETTER than new. I think I paid about $50 each…I have a 2 seater love seat and a 2 seater couch, so my cushions may be larger than the ones on your sofa. Well worth the money.

  2. we have the same couch and we LOVE it! but i totally agree – those back cushions get mushy easily. and with 3 kids romping around on the sofa with us, there is a lot of fluffing going on here … constantly.

    🙂

  3. Your sofa looks great. I know you can get pen out of many things using hair spray. I would try a bit in an out-of-the-way place first, but it just might help.

  4. I have almost the exact same couch from Macy's and we love it too…from how large it is, to the chaise lounge, to the easy-to-clean fabric. But our back pillows mush too! Still love it though! 😉

  5. A friend of mine has the same sectional and she loves it. Hers is fairly new, so no complaints. I just bought a white slipcovered sofa and chairs from Ikea and I'm a little worried about the cushions holding up over time, too. I'm sure my three boys will destroy it before that's a real concern though, lol.

  6. We have the PB comfort sectional in our family room. The cushions do give out after a while. I ordered new inserts during a recent 15% off sale and they just arrived. Looks like a new couch (plus they're way more dense than the cushions that originally came with the sofa).

  7. I thought for sure that the pearce was going to be my number one choice, but because every time I went into the store I noticed the mushed back cushions too. I was told by a friend (not sure if this is true) that Pottery Barn will refill your cushions for free. I don't know about that, but I thought that was a perk if it is true! I decided on a similar couch from Ethan Allen and I do love the look! I will let you know if my back cushions hold up any better! Wish the pearce would have fit in my space…it looks so comfortable!

    1. What was the name of the Ethan Allen couch? I have been reading about the pilling of PB performance twills – add this feedback and I am ready to look somewhere else. I am replacing furniture that has held up for 40 years – it’s still in good shape, I have slipped covered it etc. obviously just ready for new!

  8. Hi Meagan!
I have the Pearce in Oat and love it also. HOWEVER, I completely agree with the back cushions "smushing" down. That really is my only complaint, but a big one. We replaced the cushion inserts on the ends of the couch once (couch is 3 yrs. old), but the new ones are doing the same thing. The couch is super comfy and has held up to my twins and 105 lb. dog, but I wish PB would correct the cushion issue.

  9. There is so much to love about Pottery Barn, yet sometimes I geta little frustrated with their pricing in relation to quality. Its not BAD quality but it can be a little overpriced for what you get. I usually try and find a comparable product at the same price before I buy anything from pottery barn and I have even seen a console table from them for half the price on overstock.com.

  10. Our sectional is not PB but the cushion issue is universal I think! But, having four kids I must say, the space is wonderful 🙂 Yours is gorgeous, love the color.

  11. I have bought several furniture items from Pottery Barn and none of them have held up! Our dining room table has weird cracks in it in random places and so does our hutch (neither of which have been used much, except for a few holidays). I will never purchase furniture through a store like theirs again. Instead, I'll absolutely go the furniture store route where you can get a protection plan. I purchased the Guardsman plan from Bassett Furniture and they have replaced and/or fixed anything that was ever damaged or stained from my kids. Totally worth it! I love the look of PB, but I'm finding that their stuff doesnt last more than a couple years. They also don't stand behind their product!

  12. I spy my living room! Thanks for the shout out. We have had ours for over six years now. However, we had to have one custom made to fit our room so it's a copy of the Pearce from a local furniture store.

  13. Contact your store where you purchased it! We have more PB pieces than we should, cough cough, but they have ALWAYS ALWAYS stood behind their product. We had an issue with our kitchen table…we had NEVER put the leaf in it, didn't need to until 2 YEARS after we purchased it…it didn't fit, wouldn't budge…called, they replaced our ENTIRE TABLE!!! We had a lamp that kept blowing bulbs, REPLACED, no questions asked. YOU NEED TO ASK!!! While they may not replace for free each time, they DO stand behind their product and will work with you!!! And, there is a difference in pillows, some are down "wrapped", some not. Might be the issue! I am a firm believer in letting a company know if you have issues. We had an entire sofa/love seat/chair set replaced from Havertys due to an issue with the fabric…we had it cleaned according to mfg. instructions and the stripes bled! I wasn't having any part of it!! Just be firm!!

    1. I agree. Pottery Barn stands behind their products. We ordered a couch that turned out to be not as comfy as we wanted… they took it back! It was ordered from the catalog and they had to come back out and pick it up. We reordered another couch.. but it turns out the seat cushions were about two inches too long.. overhanging the edge. We contacted them and they had new ones made up and shipped them to us ASAP. Our couch is now perfect in every way. They came back out and picked up the other cushions. We have a PB basic with slipcovers that we have had for over 13 years and it is still in great shape.. I washed the slipcover tons of times, no shrinkage or anything.. and we have 5 kids and a dog in the house… and it has held up wonderfully.

  14. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this sectional, Megan. Your family room (as well as the rest of your house!) is gorgeous!! We are in the market for a sectional and it's great to hear how yours has held up. We had two very expensive couches from Ethan Allen that had the same issue with the back pillows. It's amazing that companies haven't found a solution to that issue.

  15. My son colored all over our brand new sectional with an orange sharpie a few months ago. Rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball took it right out! I couldn't believe it! I had to rub it on there a couple times, but the orange work of art completely vanished! And the rubbing alcohol did not discolor the upholstery whatsoever. Ours was microfiber though.

  16. I would definitely contact Pottery Barn to see if they can help. I worked there as a manager and we replaced cushions or refilled them all of the time.

  17. We like to look up sofas we're considering on craigslist. We didn't buy this one because the used ones on craigslist all had mushed cushions!

  18. Love all of the touches! Great job Megan. I love how you have such an amazing ability to bring adorable details to any space. We replaced cushions and a new couch and we really want to get a sectional for New Construction Home. I'll definitely keep this in mind for our hunt!

  19. Can you tell me the fill on your Pearce sectional? I'm considering buying the grand Pearce sofa which only comes in Down. For the "mushed sofa" cushions, was that down filled or poly filled? Thank you!

    1. We just ordered the Pearce couch from PB in leather and chose the down cushions.. the back cushions are not down.. only the seat portion is offered in down. The back cushions are still wonderfully comfortable, even though they are poly fill, and the are holding up perfectly… they do not sink or crush down or anything… but yet are very comfortable. Nothing but good to say about it.

  20. Tim
We bought a PD Grand in 2005. Got the upgraded down cushions and a walnut slipcover. The cushions collapsed after a few months, and the slipcover self-destructed in 6 1/2 years. Good luck trying to get any results from the PB furniture department after you buy something. Very expensive junk.

  21. Love the site and photos, etc. We recently ordered a couch in everyday suede light wheat and are now trying to figure out what color to paint the walls in the room it will go…any suggestions? We want to stay away from greens and I am leaning toward a neutral cream/very light tan. What do you think would go well w/ the light wheat color of the couch??
    THanks for your help

    1. We still enjoy this couch, the only complaint in the back cushions getting so squished. I keep meaning to call PB to try to get a replacement, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

  22. Megan
Thinking about buying the PB Pearce Sect. in Everyday Suede….thanks for your helpful comments! My only concern is the actual comfort of the cushions….my friend bought this same couch about a year ago and the cushions are not comfy and cozy…..they seem really hard and stiff. Did you find that at all? How do you feel about the overall comfort of the couch? Thanks so much….
    June

    1. The cushions are stiff at first, but hen they get almost saggy! I would not recommend buying it. We do not have young children and the sofa gets evening use after work. It used to be comfortable (the first year), now it hurts our backs if we don't flip the cushions frequently. We are considering selling it and replacing it and it is only 2 years old! The only good thing is the everyday suede fabric in oatmeal, wears great and easy to clean. Disappointed though!

  23. Hi Megan, I just discovered your site after having this sofa delivered and doing a quick google search. My kids and husband are complaining that the back and seat cushions are too firm. I was surprised at how firm they are as well…it's doesn't feel like a couch you can really sink into. You mentioned that the cushions always need fluffing up…the way the sofa feels now, I can't imagine this being an issue…Can you tell me, do they soften up a lot over time? Or do you think Pottery Barn has changed the style since you purchased yours. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!

    1. I mean the cushion always needs fluffing because it's gotten so distorted in shape. I'm not sure if they changed the style. I didn't feel that the firmness was an issue for us. I hope yours works out for you! We've had ours almost 5 years if that helps.

    2. I just received the Pearce sectional and I agree very firm and the depth of the seat cushion is only 23 inches which is not deep enough if you want to lay down. I am going to send my back and possibly get the pb comfort. Still worried about sagging cushion comments. R

    3. I received my Pearce sectional yesterday. I cannot believe the room on it! I have more lounging space then I did with a traditional couch and love seat. I have the small three piece…couch, wedge, and one seat arm. They call it the 3 Piece I Shape. I agree that it is very firm and hoping it will break in. I love the look of this so much that I even researched replacing the inserts with 1.8 density foam. So many places on line to do that, so that may be an option in the far future. But so far I'm not regretting this purchase. Wish I could post a picture!

  24. Does anyone know how to clean the sides of this sofa? I have just thrown the covers in the wash. However, I have no idea what to use to clean the sides. I have used a solution with soap and vinegar then spraying alcohol but neither worked. Thanks!

    1. I have same sofa… and agree with you completely. We have a permanent indent where my beloved four legged terrier has claimed. BUT…. I have to admit: I have bought this sofa twice. Once for our lake home and again just recently for a second home that we purchased. It is a great look "bang for your buck! " The only improvement I would recommend it in the back cushions! The pieces stay together relatively well. Typically not a problem.

  25. I spent some time on the phone with PB customer service today and I got the answer I was hoping for…you can buy replacement back pillow inserts. They asked if I wanted down or the poly something synthetic fill. I wasn't sure which I currently had, because they are broken down lumps and I want to try the other! I love everything else about this couch. It is worth a try…

  26. Ok, Megan, now that your Pearce sectional is about 3 years old, what are your thoughts? I have admired them for years, and about to order one (while they are on sale!) I understand about the back cushions…anything else? P/S Love your website!

    1. We've actually had it 6 years now. The only thing is the back cushions. One thing that's been great lately with a little baby again is how easily spills clean up with soap and water. Thanks for reading!

  27. We just bought the PB Pearce in leather, the Grand sofa size. But the seat cushions stick out from the bottom platform by close to 3 inches. This does not seem right. Either they gave us the wrong cushions, or else the base is too short. Are your seat cushions flush with the bottom of the sofa? We checked back at our PB store, and as before, they only have the Pearce sectional on in the store, and like you said, the pillows were sort of smushed, and it was nt set up that perfectly.. a floor model probably sat on by a lot of people, but even there with a fabric covering, the seat cushions were flush with the bottom platform.

    1. OK, this is so weird because I never noticed that before until you mentioned it, but yes our cushions overhang a little but not by 3 inches. I would say it's about an inch and a half though. I would call the store and talk to them about it, 3 inches seems like a big overhang.

  28. Hi – So we have the same couch and I have tried to order these same replacement pieces three times. Customer service keeps sending me the wrong inserts!!!! do you by any chance have your order still online with the part numbers for these two cushions! Got two wrong inserts today and I am going crazy on the phone with them trying to get it figured out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also washed one of my everydaysuede covers today to see how it would turn out before doing the other pieces. Worked pretty good! hoping to get my old sofa looking like new again! Gently cycle cold water with woolite.

    1. Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, I don't. But, my friend recently sent me a message saying she had the same issue and she bought fabric stuffing at Joanns – "Super Soft Polyester Fiber Fill" I think is the name – and she stuffed the back of 4 of her cushions with one bag. She showed me a picture and they look good as new, makes me want to try it since two of ours are getting smushy again.

Also, good to know about washing the cushion covers. Our baby has been sick recently and got our couch really good- everywhere! I washed with soap and water, but would be good to launder.

  29. Megan,

Do you know the width of the sofa , against the back wall? and then the lenght of the left return? If it isn't too much trouble , I have spent about two months with Pottery Barn on the phone on the website trying to get the measurement down, and it is about impossible to do, any help on yours would be appreciated. Thanks!

    1. Hi Lynne! That sounds super frustrating! Let me see if I understand- the width of the sofa from the back to the front is 3 feet, 2 inches. I'm not sure what you mean by left return. Is it not the measurement in the diagram?

  30. Meghan first of all thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly actually the measurement that I need is the length of the sofa that's the main part of the sofa so 'not piece that has the Chase on it but the other side could you give me that dimension in length for yours it looks like it is lining up to your window if it is too much trouble never mind ps your blog is to die for thank you for your help help I really appreciate it you don't know how much you're helping me with this thank you have a good day Lynne

  31. Megan sorry to be a pest I guess my question would be is yours the original dimensions the one 20 x 1 56 out of the original dimensions of the PB sofa is the peers Pottery Barn sofa is yours the large size sectional because it doesn't look like the one I saw online so I'm not sure if looks like yours would fit in my living room that's why was kind of excited when I saw yours online I was like wow this is gorgeous this would fit maybe is there anyway you could print the dimensions of yours just the length times width of the outer parameters I don't need the depth I don't need the specifics I just need the general length times with Width sometime if you have a chance that would be great because I'm in no rush I'm not gonna make this purchase for a while thank you so much By the way your blog is to die for I felt very jealous love it thank you for your help really appreciate you getting back to me so quickly

  32. Okay, it's 4 years later but your site helped me take the plunge! This morning I purchased the 3 piece wedge sectional in Everydaysuede Light Wheat. I'm so excited…mainly because it was 30% off, but then I got an additional 20% off and the shipping fee waived! I got this half price…lol. I am worried about the back cushions sagging. I have a bit of OCD so I purchased the upholstered vice the slipcover because I'd be going crazy straightening them out all the time. Delivery won't be till April 17 but I'm looking forward to coming back and giving my review. Thanks Megan!

  33. Love this thread… I am another one considering the Pearce – but for space, I can’t do a sectional.. So am probably going to do the couch and then the recliner chair… Anyone have experience with the Pearce recliner? They don’t have any on the floor I can try….

  34. Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review! I am so grateful and it was extremely helpful as I have been deliberating on buying this sectional for awhile.

  35. Considering either the Pearce or the PB Comfort. I prefer the seat depth of the PB Comfort… but it seems a little wide for my wife (who likes the Pearce). Just concerned about the back cushions (ie. the Pearce can only be ordered in the
down /poly blend for both the seat and the back cushions. The PB Comfort can be ordered in either the down blend (seat and back cushions), or if you order the new “memory foam” seat cushions you then must get the (really smushy) poly fill back cushions. Do you know what your back cushions were made of?? Any other thought or comments on the cushion issues?? (I wish they would give you all the cushion options for each sofa…not restrict you to whatever THEY want to put in them!) Thanks..

    1. Mine are the poly fill- I know because I cut into them and have been restuffing and pulling apart the foam that gets all smushed together!

  36. Please can you tell me if anyone has placed their Pearce suede covers in the washing machine and if they survived!

    1. I have with cool water and gentle laundry detergent on gentle. Then put in dryer on cool for about 20 minutes take out when still damp. Helps alot

  37. I am really wanting this couch for my den but concerned of size issues I would only need the love seat side to be shorter I can’t figure out if I can do that or not??? I don’t live near a PB and am going based off internet only!! Help!!!!

  38. Thank you for sharing your experience with Pearce. We purchased in the last year and are happy so far. Still looking for an ottoman. Can you share where you purchased yours? The room looks great!

  39. Hi Megan,
So appreciative of your effort here.
We currently have a Pearce sectional but I’m going for something not so big now. Considering a Pearce sofa .Was wondering if you read any reviews of the Performance Velvet?
Sofa will see the use of several grandkids so I will need stain resistant for sure. Our current sectional is Brushed Canvas. It’s very durable but not so stain resistant.
If you have a link reviewing the Performance fabrics that would be great.
    Thanks,Sigrid

    1. Hmm, I’m not sure about the performance velvet. I know you can schedule an in-home consult with a Pottery Barn design associate and they can review all of the fabric choices with you. I hope that helps!

  40. Hi Megan!
I saw the Pearce in the PB catalog and was in love immediately! I know you said the back cushions need a lot of fluffing, but how are the seat cushions holding up after all these years?
I bought a couch/loveseat from Ashley 4 years ago, and my seat cushions are absolutely terrible (it’s just an awful couch in general). Between them separating when you sit on them and getting flat/lumpy towards the front of the cushion, I’m going crazy! I’ve always alternated them every week or so, but with a bigger guy in the house, it seems like I’m never going to win the cushion battle ? Thank you in advance!

  41. Hi Megan, Your couch is beautiful. I was considering purchasing this one as well. The light wheat fabric sample I got looks a little darker than your couch. Is your color light wheat or could it be the oat color?

    Thanks!!!

  42. I have the Pierce sectional sofa which I bought from Pottery Barn 1 1/2 years ago. It was so hard and uncomfortable I finally got the store to replace it. Even the tech person who came out to look at it agreed it was very hard and the cushions were too thin. The new one is just as uncomfortable, not anything like the floor model. The cushions measure 5” thick, whereas the store cushions are 71/2 “ thick. The company won’t do anything more to help me.
My only solution is to buy custom replacement cushions from somewhere and hope they fit
NEVER BUY A SOFA FROM POTTERY BARN!!!
