How to Get Wavy Curls

I see all these gorgeous women with beautiful wavy hair, but didn’t really know how to do it for myself.    On Pinterest  I recently found a how-to hair tutorial for wavy curls (from Cara Loren) and tried it out on my hair.  After I shared a pic on Instagram, some people asked for the video, which is here (click the picture of Cara to see her how-to tutorial).  Isn’t she cute?!
Here’s how the wavy curls looked on my hair.  It’s different from how I normally do it, but I like it, although it took me longer than I usually spend.  I think I’m one of the last people to curl my hair this way (wrapping it around the curing iron instead of under the clamp).  I need to get with it!
Do you do your hair this way?  How long do you spend on your hair? What about shampooing?  I’m in the wash/blowdry almost everyday category because I feel like I need to after working out.  Cara says she goes about 5 days between washing!

  1. I need to try this! My hair always looks the same and I'm bored with it. Looks beautiful on you! I'm the same way, wash and dry every day..especially after a workout! How can you not?! Love your blog..Pinterest I'm Angela Elsey 🙂

  2. Her hair struck me as awesome too watch this video a few months back. It gives great results but is a little tedious for me timewise. The Minnesota winter is rough on hair and thinking a little vacation back to Houston is in order!

  3. The wavy curls look great! I shampoo every 2-3 days. My hair stylist told me to stop shampooing my hair so often; she said your hair is not "dirty" just because you sweat. It took some getting used to, but my hair looks much healthier now. I usually do the wavy curls on day 2 or 3.

    I enjoy your blog! 🙂

  4. I bought a curling wand (for cheap) and love it, though it's for special occasions only because it takes forever. The black glove is a life-saver to save your fingers from burns! I wash my hair every day too…always have. If I went 5 days without washing, you would be able to cook breakfast on my head. Ick. My Pinterest username is babymamajuice, and my real name is Amy Florez.

    1. Ha!! Me too!! I lost my little glove (probably threw it away!). I wish I hadn't because I have touched my fingers on that hot barrel- ouch! I'm off to follow you on Pinterest!

    1. Ah yes, the Pinterest addiction is pretty strong over here. So much inspiration out there & it's so easy to just sit around and pin pretty things while relaxing in front of the TV after dinner! I just started following you on Pinterest too – I don't know how I wasn't before?!?

  5. I love the wavy curls you did!
I have been working hard to damage my hair as little as possible while growing it out, so I try to go 3 days between washes. The third day may require some dry shampoo ( or cornstarch) on the roots to deal with oil, but I too have been told it doesn't mean your hair is really dirty. And if I dry it/straighten it the first day, it lasts for 3. I just want to protect it from heat styling as much as I can as it is trying to get nice and long.

    1. I just found you on Pinterest and am following you now. I'm so happy to hear you let your natural curly hair air dry- it does sound like a dream to me. Sometimes I go to bed with wet hair, but it looks crazy in the morning, so I have to wear it in a pony tail the next day.

  6. Yeah I am a wash and dry everyday too. I can't wait til my hair is long enough to get the waves. I don't have a Pintrest account although I've noticed my mud room project has been pinned tons! Do I need an invitation from someone in order to have account?

  7. It looks great on you! I tried curling my hair like this and it took me FOREVER but I loved the results. My husband even noticed! It looks great on you! I wash every 2-3 days, and dry shampoo in between, even though I workout everyday. I also notice that when I curl my hair it doesn't look so bad on the days that I don't wash/dry. My pinterest name is Laurin Search.

  8. Oooh I like it! I found when I started to curl my hair this way it took forever at the beginning. But…as you practice, you'll become super fast at it!

  9. Hey Megan! I think that looks awesome. I still clamp the hair in the curling iron but my hair's not really long enough to wrap around the iron. I'm a wash every other day schedule for my hair but am totally wondering about how to manage that with workouts too. Anyway, I'd love for you to check out my pinterest boards "christinevbrown" or my blog berryfreckles.com. Thanks!

  10. From last January til about October I used to only wash my hair 2-3x/week. But now for some reason I'm back to every other day. I need to train my hair again, it's soo difficult. I really don't like my hair when it's not washed (flat, thin hair..)

  11. Love those curls! Cassie from Hi Sugarplum inspired me to finally stop washing my hair everyday. I bought some dry shampoo and that combined with hair-ties that don't leave big dents in my hair have been the keys for me. My hair is long and thick and is a hot mess when I wake up in the morning but if I brush it out it calms down before I have to leave the house. When I work out, I wear a thick headband at my hairline and tell myself that it absorbs the sweat before my roots do–don't know if that's actually happening, but the placebo effect is good enough for me : ) My pinterest name is Leah Buckley! : )

  12. Your hair looks great! I like to do the same thing with my hair before I go out on the weekends sometimes. I do it with my straightner though. You basically do the same thing you would with a curling iron. Clamp the straightner on your hair and twirl it as you move down (does that make sense? haha) and voila! Also, I LOVE your iPhone case.

  13. Looks great! Mine isn't quite long enough yet, and it is super straight!! I have to wash and dry mine every day or it would look like a limp dishrag! Katie has the most beautiful natural curls. She is always being asked what curling iron she uses!! LOL

  14. So cute! I wash every 4 days, I have thick, kind of wavy hair. I straighten usually, but love to curl on day 3 and then my favorite is the leftover curls on day 4. I always get compliments on it and when people ask what I did, I bite my tongue from saying "oh, I just haven't washed for 4 days", haha. It's true, but doesn't sound very nice 🙂 That said, I also dry shampoo in between washes, dry shampoo is probably my favorite discovery ever.

  15. I love watching hair tutorials!!! Great post! I'm a wash everyday girl too… Gotta in this Texas heat! When I want to curl my hair I sleep with it wet and its so much easier to curl in the morning, or if I have to wash in the morning I skip conditioner the day I curl. And I can't go clamp less 🙂 I have the t3 wand but just am too clumsy and burn myself a lot! The glove is a little bulky for my taste… So I curl old school but leave the ends hang out. I also love the sock bun curl method! Worked great for me and got lots of compliments! Happy curling 🙂 http://pinterest.com/RebeccaCisneros/

  16. AHH!! You look great! I just chopped 4 inches off of mine. LOL! I have to wash/dry/flatiron every day too. I just get super oily after day one. 🙁 I have natural curls that aren't all the way curly so I have to tame them. I am on Pinterest as well, Shannon Shurtleff. 🙂 I will pass the video to my teenager, she will adore these curls!

  17. Hey Megan! As I said on Instagram, I love your hair like this!! 🙂

I have naturally curly hair that I straighten. The first 2 days after a shampoo, I can wear my hair down, but by day three it's either in a ponytail or a topknot. I found the most AMAZING hair"spray" that keeps your hair feeling (and smelling) fresh for day 2 & beyond…it's the Aveda Air Control. It smells SO good & it just gives your hair the slightest "hold" once it begins to get limp. I think you'd love it!

  18. I love hair tutorials!!! I'm also hooked on Huda makeup tutorials since you posted those awhile back too btw!!! But back to hair… I'm a wash everyday girl too! Gotta in this Texas heat! But I have found that the days I want to curl it there are a couple of things that help me… I'll sleep with it wet the night before or if I have to wash in the morning I'll skip conditioner that day… Sounds bad but helps the curl stay if its humid. I can't go clamp less 🙂 too clumsy and my glove is a little bulky… So I use the clamp curling iron old school and just leave the ends out… Also speeds it up for me and cuts it from like 20 min to less than 10! I love the sock bun curling method too! I pinned it 🙂 http://pinterest.com/RebeccaCisneros/

  19. It looks darling on you! I have two grown daughters who are MASTERS at those curls, and I just can't (for the life of me) get it to work quite as well on my hair … ah well. Love Pinterest – my name over there is pollydove. Thanks!

  20. I've curled my hair like this or similiar almost everyday for 3 years. I recently cut my bangs and now wear it really straight. A big difference and I'm still getting used to it. I am addicted to my curling iron.
    Pinterest is under KMKing81

  21. Your hair looks gorg!!! I still use the clamp when I curl my hair, I just prefer how it looks. I can go 4-5 days without washing my hair now, but I used to be and every other day washer and the third day hair was always nasty hair. It takes a bit of time to 'train' your hair to go 4-5 days, but with all the dry shampoo options out there now it's not that bad. And now third day hair is sometimes my best hair haha
    xo

    ps, I'm brittdouglas8 on Pinterest 🙂

  22. Okay so I bought a wand curling iron, but still haven't played with it enough to get those great waves. I need to get on that! and I still need to learn how to do the cute messy bun! I'm so behind and my hair looks the same EVERY DAY. You hair looks beautiful like that!

    1. That dang messy bun took me way too long to master- and it's actually really simple once I got the hang of it. It's my favorite way to wear "dirty" hair or to the gym. I'm sure it will be like that at the pool this summer too!

  23. Ooooh, I think momma's getting a new hairdo today! 🙂 I never wrap mine around the barrel either. I'll probably have burn marks on my arm but maybe I'll have nice waves to show for it!

    1. I lost the little glove that came with one of my curling irons- I wish I had it now- too easy to burn your fingers if you're not careful!

  24. Thanks for this! I was working from home today since I had an eye dr appt and had a chance to try it. My eye dr got some fancy hair today! 😉 I was a no clamp virgin before this and my eyes have seen the light! Not claming makes such pretty curls!!!

Oh, BTW, I am Jaime Roszak in Pinterest and I am OBSESSED with it! 🙂

  25. I love it…it looks great!
I wash my hair every-single-day! I have to…I get super sweaty at the gym! I feel dirty if I don't! I take a shower after I put my little to bed, I use "It's a 10" leave in conditioner after I towel dry my hair, then I blow dry my hair mostly dry, usually my ends are still a little damp. Then it's bed time and I style my hair in about 30 minutes in the morning. 🙂

  26. Love it girl! You are absolutely gorgeous! That's how I do my hair almost everyday! I just started wearing it that way about 6 months ago and I get so many compliments! I have to do it about every other day. I'm with ya on the gym thing! Btw, I recently sat down last week and read Honey We're Healthy for about an hour! Not only have we fallen in love with the mexican casserole at our house, but I'm doing the Jamie Eaton Program. Currently on week 2 and seeing some great results already! You're a huge inspiration for me blog & style-wise, so now health-wise, too! Thanks for the inspiration!! xo ~ Virginia @ LiveLoveDIY

  27. I think it looks really nice; very feminine and pretty. I don't have long hair but wash my hair normally every other day. I did wash it every day when I worked out and was sweating. I don't think I go without washing it after sweating.

  28. It looks great! I can go 2-3 days between washes but only if I don't workout. Working out I'm an everyday washer. I spend about an hour between blowdrying, fixing & makeup. Too long!

  29. I'm wavy most of the time — and just starting using a clampless iron…feel like such a dork with the glove, but it's essential!! You look gorgeous!

  32. Megan, there is a great idea I got from Pinterest months ago that works great for me. It is called "The No Heat Curls". Basically I blow dry my hair at night, wrap it up, sleep on it, pull out the hair band in the morning and its pretty much done. I just finish it off with a curling iron on the ends. I follow you on Pinterest and I am listed under Megan Lisiecki (http://pinterest.com/meganlis/)

  33. Megan, forgot to tell you..(I am actually a hairstylist- for whatever that's worth) try spraying each section w/ Redken "spray starch"..works wonders! And I am Holli Hager on Pinterest…have a board full of Hair Ideas;)

  34. Hi Megan, I have long, thick, curly hair. I wash it once to twice a week. My hair looks better a few days after I shampoo. I stumbled upon Cara's tutorial a few months back and tried her technique. My curls look awesome when I follow her instructions. It is more time consuming than the way I normally curl it though. Your hair turned out really nice! BTW, I love your blog!!! It's one of my favs! You can follow me on pinterest at http://pinterest.com/kymberearlbeck/

  35. My daughters and I all have naturally curly hair that we straighten every day. I just started working out so I have to shampoo/conditioner every day that I exercise.

    My Pinterest is Pinterest.com/4chocolatte

  36. So pretty!! Wish I could try it… my hair won't hold curl : ( I was hoping I'd be one of those girls whose hormones went crazy post-pregnancy and ended up with curly hair… still stick straight!

  37. Hi, Megan. Your hair looks fabulous!! I'm going to try this myself. I love reading your blog..you always have such great tips/ideas/motivation. You are a great role model. Thanks for sharing! I follow you on instagram and pinterest. My pinterest username is: http://pinterest.com/mmaenza.

    1. Thanks so much Marina. I found your Pinterest boards and am following you now- I love what it says in your profile- simplicity and positivity!

  38. You hair looks great the more you practice the easier it becomes! XOXO I wish I could go 5 days with out washing but in Miami it gets hot and with exercising I feel I need to wash my hair almost everyday. I do love to curl my hair though its faster than using the flat iron.

  39. Looks cute! I saw you post it on instagram and thought it turned out really great.
I'm in the wash/blowdry every day category also. I just can't stand the way it feels after I exercise so I have to- I don't know how some women cannot, but maybe I sweat too much?! haha
I'm a huge pinterest user…best way to pass the time. 🙂 My username is EjTrout

  40. I bought one of those curling wands (without a glove) and burnt a few fingers the first time I used it! Love the waves, just have to get used to doing it.
I love your blog and follow you on Pinterest. I'm at pinterest.com/jenniferm27

  41. i just got a new haircut so i will see how long it takes me to style. my hairdresser did wavy curls with a flat iron in about 3 minutes on my super thick hair, i wish i was that quick!
i love your blog, i'm a new follower
my pinterest name is abbey bernardi
i'm also on instagram, are you?
hope you are having a great weekend!

  42. I love the waves! It looks so good. You are not the only person who still uses the curling iron clamp. I definitely need to try this look. I wash my hair every day. I have an oily scalp and it's so gross if I don't wash it. My hair stylist agreed its a must for me. I'm on pinterest. I'm Leigh Furline.

  43. I usually curl mine using the wand and it stays like that for several days. I can't wash mine everyday bc it's pretty dry. It takes a while initially but is nice to not ave to fix after that! My Pinterest name is Leah Opitz. (I'm in Katy too)

  44. You're not the last person, trust me! I hate curling my hair that way because it takes so long (I have a lot of hair!). You also might try Suave Dry Shampoo to get an extra day out of your hair. Working out definitely cuts into how long I can go without washing but this definitely helps!! 🙂

  45. Hi! I am a new reader, I just discovered your blog, and love it 🙂
I DO curl my hair this way, and it works better for me, especially, because my hair is so fine that the clamp used to leave a noticeable
dent if I wasn't careful. Your hair look great!!
I agree! If I workout that day, I definitely wash my hair.
Otherwise, dry shampoo works great, but I only can go every other, or MAYBE every 3rd day.
    Nice to meet you!
Check out my blog, too, if you'd like.
